A mouse trap, placed on top of your alarm clock, will prevent you from
rolling over and going back to sleep after you hit the snooze button.

First give her a LiveDVD for a few months.

She can't break it.

Edubuntu is a bit more geared towards elementary school.

I suggest Qimo.

It's really interesting. While Edubuntu is actually designed for
network installations at schools, Qimo is designed for kids to
use. By default, it will create two accounts. One that auto-logins
for the kid, and another parental account with sudo permissions.

I know I'm late to comment but I just installed qimo on an old Dell box that we
were not using any longer.
My 2 yo grandson loves Tux-Paint and we will be setting the box up at his house
this weekend on next.
Along with instructions to his parents on how to usw the system, I hope to
break them from MS.

fedora has the ability to install 'sugar' application suite and
olpc-switch-desktop which should pretty much provide the same intuitive
user interface as the olpc itself though admittedly, I have never done
this.

This should be very usable for a young child.
