Re: Percona

2012-03-08 Thread Bryan O'Neal
Sorry for the late reply
Well... To be quite frank it does not provide any features we need and
is not worth the risk (real, perceived, or as dictated by a legal and
accounting department with or without expensive technical research and
trials). We support many thousands of servers (large, physical
servers) and millions of databases. Switching engines is not something
to take lightly. If we used fusion IO (oh how nice that would be) then
perhaps. But even then the percona patched innodb is very close in
performance. Remember, percona has a lot of features in there innodb
that are not stock, fast and effective compression, asynchronous
drops, better purge performance, etc, etc, etc. We just don't need to
worry about the xtra layer. Which, depending on use case, can hinder
performance by spinning additional cpu cycles without increasing
throughput.

So I guess I have to ask. Why do you use xtradb? What is in xtra that
compels you to use it? Also which innodb engine were you using before
you switched?

Last job, where I was using Percona, was CentOS based. I think we
initially were using 5.1, but we moved to 5.2. Definitely doing lots with
PHP as well.

We got our packages from the Percona repo.

Uninstalling AMP packages, then installing from source is probably the
best way, but then you lose all of the package management stuff.

Use the configs from the RPM source packages and build RPMs, then you get
to keep package management stuff.

When I get a chance, I'll try that method, but that won't be for a bit.

Red Hat has some tools for automating rebuilding RPMs. Presuming you can
get source packages from Percona you might be able to grab them, flip the
SPHINX switch and build packages.

Installing from source:
http://www.percona.com/doc/percona-server/5.5/installation.html#installing-percona-server-from-a-source-tarball
Percona doesn't provide the Sphinx Storage Engine, but includes it, as
example, in their "installing from source" reference above.

Your choices are:
1) Pull and replace all required packages for PHP and PHP-MSQL using the
EPEL or REMI repo to replace them (as in this example):
http://www.andresmontalban.com/update-centos-5-php-5-1-to-php-5-3/ being
sure to change the last line to "# yum –-enablerepo=remi update php php-*
mysql"
Then build your source including Sphinx.

2) Pull and compile from source php to mysql with mysql-devel included.

Have you tried to just use the Percona repo and install their binaries
(won't provide Sphinx of course) but it's sweet?

Re: Percona

I've tried, but haven't been able to get it installed using standard centOS
packages because of php MySQL extension misalignments. The PHP extension
required MySQL 5.1, but I installed 5.5. If you get a path to installing it,
I'd be interested especially if you can get sphinx compiled along with it.
