Wait...almost all modern TVs have a VGA signal input. Why not wire the
computer straight to the TV and use the computer as a player, avoiding the
need to burn anything? Any modern distro will have at least one player for
.AVI files and tons more in the repos, starting with VLC.

Why bother with optical burning?

Re: Torrent

2011-02-24 Thread Bryan O'Neal
Is no that what an open source project is? ;)
After all we assume this "movie" is perfectly legal and freely
licensed. Other wise that would be theft from those who spent their
efforts making the film. The actors, producers, etc. Sure but also the
writers, animators/special effects artists, film crew, greps, and even
those of us who own shares of the production houses / studios.

Torrent is a perfectly legitimate distributions system that is,
frankly, way cool. Piracy is not cool. The two are not the same.

Back to the original question, open the .torrent file with a
bittorrent application and it will start the download. It may take a
while but eventually (depending on your, and their, bandwidth) you
will have the full movie. There are a number of applications that will
compress and burn the movies for you but let us cross that bridge once
you have the movie.

Re: Torrent

2011-02-23 Thread Jim March
Yeah, what you have is the "pointer" to all the bits of the file. Note the
size of the .torrent file - WAY too small to be the actual movie...most of
which are 700megs.

Once you get the movie, it'll generally be a .mpeg or .avi or one of a few
other video formats. Once in a while it'll be a .RAR archive, in which case
in most Linux distros you're OK - open the archive, double-click on the
lowest-numbered file inside, it will pack 'em all into the actual video
format file.

Next, why burn 'em to DVD? Play 'em right there on your computer if you
want...

Re: Torrent

2011-02-23 Thread Jordan Aberle
A .torrent is just a script file to tell bittorrent where to download
the file from. It sounds like you need to read a bit how torrents
work.

Re: torrent question

I constantly see advice that for using a torrent I should set my
router to port forward a number of ports to the using computer.
Problem is that there may be more than one computer on the LAN using
torrents now that they are so prevalent. For example, I have an old
and a new gaming machine with different games that use torrents for
patch days. I download a lot of Linux distros (normally on a Linux
box) to try and torrents are great for that. I don't typically
download any music but if I did it would be on my media machine.

So the question is how does one deal with that sine the router can
only forward those ports to a single machine. One thought might
be to

forward one or two of those ports to each using machine. How do
people deal with this issue?

I found http://youscrewedup.com/torrent_router_tutorial/ which seems
to answer the question in a couple of ways.

1) The name of the site is kinda wierd so I wonder if any of you can
verify the information seems legitiimate.

2) According to the NAT section, it seems like it will work if you
"just" unblock ports 6881-6889 on the router. I am wondering just how
unsafe that might be. Input?

3) Further down in the article under "port forwarding, virtual server"
it seems to talk about another method but I am a bit unclear on it.
It seems to me that would somehow require the torrent clients on
additional machines would have to somehow tell torrent servers to use
a different port range than usual and I have not a clue how one would
do that. Am I (once again) misreading something?

The easiest way to deal with this situation is with UPnP, but it's
insecure and shouldn't be done unless you want to run the risk.
However, I've been running it for a while, and haven't had any
problems. Anyway, it allows compatible torrent programs (Azureus and
others) , along with other programs that support it, to dynamically
forward ports to the computer that it's running on. As for different
ports, it doesn't matter what port you run bittorrent on, so long as
it's forwarded.
