Re: Upgraded from Debian Lenny to Squeeze, and my machine won't boot

2011-03-29 Thread Mark Phillips
Well, I guessed correctly again..I ran aptitude install
linux-image-2.6-686, it installed 2.6.32, and X came up just like before.

Now to get the system upgraded to testing.any
suggestions/recommendations beyond DON'T DO IT!...;-)

Re: Upgraded from Debian Lenny to Squeeze, and my machine won't boot

2011-03-29 Thread Mark Phillips
OK, progress has been made

1. fsck said both internal drives were OK, but i forced it to run anyway. No
errors
2. re-ran grub-install for the 5th time (?) and still no changereboot
goes right back to grub.
3. discovered that I could boot into 2.6.26 if I used the initrd-2.6.26.bak
file. So did that. The files have different sizes and dates...
4. I looked at men.lst and found that it was trying to chainload into Grub
2. I couldn't get it to run from the grub menu, but then I booted into
2.6.26 and ran upgrade-from-grub-legacy. Hypothesis: the dist-upgrade was
trying to move to grub 2 and so I had a 1/2 grub 1.98 and 1/2 grub 2
install. The grub 2 upgrade worked, and now I get my typical grub menu
and I can select which linux version to boot into.
5. Booting 2.6.26 causes a kernel panic, but I suspect that is caused by the
bad initrd-2.6.26 file. I seached Debian to find that file, but I could not.
What package do I need to re-install to re-create the initrd-2.6.26? Or the
latest kernel for squeeze is OK, too.
6. Fixed mysql problem. It seems during the dist-upgrade, mysql-server 5.0
was removed, but not the client. So I reinstalled mysql for squeeze, and
aptitude removed the 5.0 client and installed the 5.1 server/client/common
and now it works just fine. All dbs and tables are intact.
7. Fixed some of the X problems - there were some font dirs missing, so
mkfontdir removed those errors. But still no X yet. The error from gdm is:
error inserting i915
(/lib/modules/2.6.21-2-686/kernel/drivers/char/drm/i915.ko) unknown symbols
in module or unknown parameter.

I suspect that my X problem may go away if I reinstall kernel to 2.6.26, or
later. I think something happened in the dsit-upgrade. So, how do I
reinstall the kernel, or upgrade to a newer one?

Thanks!

This is what I'd expect to see if the kernel didn't contain support for the
SATA or SCSI chipset for the controller where the first disk lives. This
would also happen if you're using an initrd and the initrd doesn't contain the
right module for the chipset.

The X config that was valid for the previous version is probably invalid for
the new version. mysql probably got bumped up a minor version too, so the
config file syntax changed.

>> However, I cannot change menu.lst to reboot.

This isn't surprising if it can't find the root filesystem because there's no
support for the chipset.

hda is an IDE disk. Is your disk IDE or SATA? That's an old kernel, but SATA
support was totally in there then. Also, the newest kernels treat
*everything* as SCSI, even if it's IDE, unless you enable a bunch of
deprecated stuff.

Partition tables don't generally change unless you explicitly make those
changes yourself.

> referred to sda5.

Whether an {IDE, SATA} disk is referred to as hd* or sd* is dependent on
kernel age and the options that are enabled. It's kind of a mess, but that's
how history played out.

This sort of thing is why I like to upgrade systems in small pieces instead of
in one gigantic chunk. If you upgrade A, then B, then C, and stuff breaks
after C, you can narrow the problem down a lot. If you upgrade ABC, and stuff
breaks, you have a lot more to look at, and it takes longer to fix. I also
always have a custom kernel with everything needed to mount / built in (not as
an initrd), but I do that mostly for historical reasons and because I can.
There's no reason to shy away from putting the things you need to mount / in
an initrd... except for threads like this, which show up a few times a
year

Maybe boot up a live CD and verify the partitioning is what you thought you
had and the contents are as you expect? Also, I note that in one part of
the message you refer to hda5 and in another you say the message you got
referred to sda5.

Because I mistyped itMy email is on a machine in one room, and the dead
machine is in another..

The machine says it is using grub 1.5

How do I find, using grub, the right parameters for the kernel command?

Re: Upgraded from Debian Lenny to Squeeze, and my machine won't boot

2011-03-28 Thread Mark Phillips
According to this page
http://wiki.debian.org/DeviceDatabase/PCI#Supported_by_Debian_Kernel_Modules,
the card is supported in the 2.6.26. kernel with the siimage module.

I tried using grub to attempt to boot. I set up the following
based on (1) what I saw using the knoppix disk that the internal
drives were mounted on /media/sda5 and /media/sdb1./media/sda5
has the normal linux file system and sdb1 has my backup folders,
and (2) grub's tab completion.

grub> root (hd0,4)grub> kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.21-1-686
root =/dev/sda5grub> initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.26-1-686grub>
boot

I get as far as:Kernel panic: not syncing: VFS unable to mount
rootfs on unknown block(0,0)

If I back down to 2.6.21. or 2.6.18 I get this error:Begin:
mounting root file system...Begin: running
/scripts/local_top...doneBegin: waiting for root file system...

So, I guess my original hypothesis is wrong...the SI drive
controller may be workingexcept for a small annoying kernel
panic or inability to load the file system

Does this help anyone figure out what I should do?

Thanks,

I have an older Dell Optiplex GX260 running Debian lenny. It has
worked foryears as a desktop and a small web server. At one
point one of theintegrated IDE disk controller channels died,
so I installed a new diskcontroller card, a Silicon Image 0680
ATA133 and it worked out of the boxwith the two drives for the
past 3 months. Last weekend I tried adist-upgrade to squeeze.
The upgrade had no errors, so I rebooted themachine, and now
all I get is a grub menu.

When the machine boots, the Silicon Magic displays it's banner andrecognizes
the two drives installed in the machine (same as before theupgrade).
I then get the message loading grub 1.5, and I then get dumped toa
grub menu. It seems the boot process does not access the Silicon
Imagecontroller, although it did before I upgraded to squeeze.
I tried accessingthe drive from the grub prompt, but the disk
access light does not seem tolight up - only the cd light.

I tried booting from a Knoppix 4.6.6 CD, and it worked. I am able
to browsethe internal hard drives with no problem and read
files. So, at leastKnoppix can use the controller card and the
hardware is not dead. I noticedon the upgrade from lenny to
squeeze I went from kernel 2.6.21 to 2.6.26.

Any suggestions on how to get the machine to boot again?

Thanks,

Most likely you are going to have to check your hardware
compatiblity lists. Yes, but why? Debian now has a TOTAL Libre
Kernel. Any hardware that doesn't comply with FOSS standards has
been yanked out.

Re: Upgraded from Debian Lenny to Squeeze, and my machine won't boot

2011-03-28 Thread Mark Phillips
A few more observations

I tried using grub to attempt to boot. I set up the following based on (1)
what I saw using the knoppix disk that the internal drives were mounted on
/media/sda5 and /media/sdb1./media/sda5 has the normal linux file system
and sdb1 has my backup folders, and (2) grub's tab completion.

grub> root (hd0,4)
grub> kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.21-1-686 root =/dev/sda5
grub> initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.26-1-686
grub> boot

I get as far as:
Kernel panic: not syncing: VFS unable to mount rootfs on unknown block(0,0)

If I back down to 2.6.21. or 2.6.18 I get this error:
Begin: mounting root file system...
Begin: running /scripts/local_top...done
Begin: waiting for root file system...

So, I guess my original hypothesis is wrong...the SI drive controller may be
workingexcept for a small annoying kernel panic or inability to load the
file system

Does this help anyone figure out what I should do?

Thanks,

Mark
