Re: test a sed command?

2011-09-14 Thread Dazed_75
Thank you all. Apparently I was not clear that I was talking about doing
this for a number of files and in potentially several directories in a
hierarchy. Since sed seems also to have no recursive directory option
either, it seems I have to just know which direcories have eligable files in
them and do it a directory at a time. I was trying to avoid copying all the
material to a test directory, but that seemed the best course. Putting
Joseph's solution and Kevin's suggestion together with globbed file names
for a test showed me I would feel pretty safe even doing this in the live
directories since the substitution is of IP addresses which are very
definitive in form.

Thanks again!

The default for sed is to output the results to stdout.
If you just leave out the option to write back to the original file, wouldn't
that work as a test?
Alternatively you could pipe the sed output into diff against the original file
Something like this:
sed -e 'command' infile | diff infile -

Re: test only - earlier email submit today missing

2008-06-03 Thread Lisa Kachold
Hi,

To find commands or files, use the following shell tools:

which sendmail
This will tell you if the command is in your bash PATH (check /etc/profile and
$HOME/.bash_profile $HOME/.bashrc or just type set

locate sendmail
Locate is an add on tool you can install from your package management
application or via up2date, yum or apt-get. (Locate updates a database index
of all files via an adjacent command updatedb (usually configured at install
in /etc/cron.d). Locate will whine if updated has not been run for more than a
week).

find / -name sendmail
This will run a find - preface it with sudo or from a root shell to get all
files in the /root $PATH since you will be limited from seeing all files as a
user.

sendmail is almost always in /usr/sbin/sendmail or /lib/sendmail

You are probably not going to be able to read the output of sendmail -d.

You can, with root/sudo access, spoof the from address if your SMTP
application (postfix, exim or sendmail) is setup correctly.

If you have a unix/linux box with command line (sudo to send in secure mail
installations) [and a properly configured /etc/mail/sendmail.cf and DNS MX
record] you can do a:

sendmail -f [EMAIL PROTECTED] $emailaddressorpluglist

That will spoof the sender.

sendmail -d $emailaddressorpluglist

Will do a debug session to see if the envelope was dropped.

To help others out, setting Receive acknowledgment mail when you send
mail to the list? will help those that want acknowledgment that the
list has processed the mail you sent out.

Granted, when someone responds to your email, hopefully the text will
be helpfully quoted below the response.

I think the default is to send emails to the sender. If it's not I think
it should be.

In any case that setting can be changed per user.

Yes, we should probably add a few items to the FAQ.

1. A list of user configurable options for the mailing lists, e.g.
digests, send to sender, etc.

2. A mention of the list archives.

3. Known confuzilations, e.g. gmail swallowing mail to the sender.

4. Other mechanisms for contacting us about problems, e.g. alphorn[0],
smoke signals, TCP over carrier pigeon, etc.

Maybe we should leave that last off :).
