Re: [PLUG] Debian G/L & मी

2024-07-29 Thread Sudhanwa Jogalekar via plug-mail
I remember two instances of my Debian installation ages back.

After getting fade up for about half an hour of giving yes/no input to
various questions, pressed the reset button, ejected the CD. End of
install!!

Another time was a surprising Hindi language choice during installation!!
Got "कुंजीपटल चयन करे" on the screen and next step was press reset button
and remove CD!!

Never thought of Debian install anytime later on.

Well,
What you needed is some bootable system that can do fsck on your
uncountable file system. I offered Ubuntu that can do that job.

If you want to compare various bootable distros, that's a different
discussion.

Please decide your priority... Whether to make your system workable or
compare distros

Re: [PLUG] Installing GNU/Linux on school computers

2023-07-10 Thread Sudhanwa Jogalekar via plug-mail
Hi,

Applications like office should not be a problem on any current linux
distribution.
Marathi or any Indic language usage is also not a problem. You can simply
install the language, font and your favourite input method.

Considering the environment you have, I would suggest to go for Mint or any
lightweight variant of Ubuntu eg. Lubuntu. That will help in getting
acquainted and will have ease in system administration.

2021-12-29 Thread Sudhanwa Jogalekar via plug-mail
Hi,

Looks like there are very basic differences in the images.
vendor jpg image is 1336 × 1336 ppi 8 bit RGB image. And your png image is
52.598 × 52.598 pixels/mm 16 bit but grayscale image.
You might be loosing lot of image information due to selection of grayscale.

You can also use https://pixelcalculator.com for some computation or
references.

What is this objectionable content and what are the complaints ? #Pluggies

objectiobale content on it. Probably only after the "new kids on the block

There is hardly any administrative activities required there. Adding

Without enough discussions and a general consent, no decision should be

Whenever possible, required we always give due credit to Somesh Bartakke
for his work. The current image was modified by Zoyd from Somesh's work.
There is some mistake in the current one but that hardly matters now.

And as a policy, (not a written hard and fast policy as such) there are
hardly any names of people mentioned anywhere on plug website or any of the
associated events. Probably, in the social media exposure/explosion
scenario that is completely wrong.

Actually, be cause of this, many times it becomes difficult for the old

needed the most! When I bought it I wondered if would every use it!!)

So I assume now option is to get HDMI output, once kernel has
booted or X has started. Still searching how to do that.

But if anyone has any solution/tips please do point out.

After many years of usage, I stopped using CLI quite some time back. But
still use vi kind of editors a few times. This reminds me of the best
editor I ever used -- BRIEF . Just checked that Wikipedia page and found
that few things in vim come from brief !! Just check the features in it
that are even today very useful and innovative!! And those were available
in the eighties on a dos environment!!

Check out the wiki page here:

PDF is essentially meant to get the exact same thing that was created to be
seen by the reader, anywhere on any platform.

If the file is made editable, the main purpose itself will be lost.

I hope by this time during this whole exercise you must have realized that
dont mess up with partitions.

And more importantly, plan what you want to achieve.

And even more important is to get enough knowledge on how things will work
before the plan.

Looks like all these were missing in your exercise and hopefully you gained
out of it.

And just as irrelevent as your mixing of 19.1 to osho departure, I was in
the commune that day.

Hi Navin,

Nice to see you on the list after ages !!

This is the news article about Microsoft Linux kernel.

https://www.zdnet.com/article/windows-10-is-getting-a-microsoft-built-linux-kernel

And it does not look like a core kernel in windows or even it can make some
good change to windows. Possibly they are continuing with the tactics of
getting more of Linux people to windows world by having more
interoperability products.

Interestingly, some windows 95 things are coming back to current windows !!
Maybe that could be a good reason to go back to Windows !! Linux kernel in
windows may not be the right reason to switch back ;-)

We stopped moderation completely after there was some huge discussion and
concerns raised about it. As Karunakar mentioned, there is no way to stop
people from registering with various ids. Moreover, there is no method to
know when any person will start posting absurd things.

So, just chill and use dev/null effectively !! And once in a while enjoy
the absurd, completely out of context postings !! :-)

[PLUG] Fwd: [Wikimediaindia-l] SVG Translation Campaign 2019

Subject: [Wikimediaindia-l] SVG Translation Campaign 2019
To: Wikimedia India Community list

Hello everyone,

The SVG Training Campaign 2019

will start from 21 February 2019 (International Mother Language Day). It is
a 38-day long campaign to translate the SVG files into Indian languages for
use of regional language Wikipedias. After Wikigraphists Bootcamp in
September 2018, we had a good number of Wikimedians from India and
neighbouring countries, who were trained on using Inkscape and other tools,
to create vector illustrations (SVG is a file format for vector graphics,
like JPG for raster graphics). This campaign is a follow-up to that
project, and also with a goal to promote the idea of vector graphics among
the larger Indian community. Often, we see English-labelled SVG files being
used on Indian Wikipedias, this campaign also helps us to have localised
SVG files with labels in regional languages to be used on Wikipedias. I am
writing this email to invite you all to participate in the campaign, and
give some updates.

All the resources to enable you to participate in this campaign have been
listed at
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:SVG_Translation_Campaign_2019_in_India/Resources.
This includes a 24-min video tutorial to learn about translating SVGs using
Inkscape (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5OOZMIq-8A), steps to
participate in the campaign, Inkscape related resources, fonts to use
(download and install), and also dictionaries (please feel free to add your
language dictionaries to the page). We also have instructions for
Chromebooks about the same.

Lists of images for all languages are available at:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:SVG_Translation_Campaign_2019_in_India/File_list.
For people to practice before the campaign starts on 21 February 2019,
there are also practice lists (20 images) to practice SVG translation. All
these can be accessed from the above mentioned "File list" page.

If you have questions or queries related to SVG translation, including
issues you face with the files, can be posted to the Help Desk at
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_talk:SVG_Translation_Campaign_2019_in_India/Help_Desk,
or contact any of the language organisers listed at
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:SVG_Translation_Campaign_2019_in_India/Organisers
.

Please sign up as a participant at:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:SVG_Translation_Campaign_2019_in_India/Participants,
and you can the join the Telegram group for this campaign at,
https://t.me/joinchat/E1HSNhOXJZWnxus-36PuNA.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Best,
Krishna Chaitanya V.

[PLUG] Fwd: [Wikimediaindia-l] SVG Translation Campaign 2019 in India

2019-01-14 Thread Sudhanwa Jogalekar
FYI.

Some people on the list will surely be interested in participating in this
activity.

Subject: [Wikimediaindia-l] SVG Translation Campaign 2019 in India
To: Wikimedia India Community list

Hello everyone,

As it is said, "A picture is worth a thousand words but vector
illustrations are even better", [Attribution
].
I am delighted to announce the "SVG Translation Campaign 2019 in India".
SVG Translation Campaign 2019 in India is a planned 38-day long campaign to
translate the English-labelled SVG files into Indian languages for use on
regional language Wikipedias. During Wikigraphists Bootcamp in September
2018
,
we had several Wikimedians from India who were trained on using Inkscape
and other tools, to create vector illustrations (SVG is a file format for
vector graphics, like JPG for raster graphics). This campaign is a
follow-up of that project and also with a goal to promote the idea of
vector graphics among the larger Indian community. Often, we see
English-labelled SVG files being used on Indian Wikipedias, this campaign
also helps us to have localised SVG files with labels in regional languages
to be used on Wikipedias.

More about the campaign can be seen at:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:SVG_Translation_Campaign_2019_in_India,
where all the required material to understand about vector graphics and
SVGs is already listed. There will be campaign specific tutorials for the
campaign posted soon at:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:SVG_Translation_Campaign_2019_in_India/Resources
.

This message is to notify the community about the planned campaign, more
details to follow soon. The campaign starts on 21st. February 2019, marking
"International Mother Language Day", and will continue till 31st March
2019. To make it easy for the participants, a list of images (inclusive,
but not limited to) will posted at:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:SVG_Translation_Campaign_2019_in_India/File_list
.

All the communities are invited to actively take part in the campaign, you
can sign-up yourself as a "Community organiser" for your language at
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:SVG_Translation_Campaign_2019_in_India/Organisers
(max
two per community), or just sign up as a participant at
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:SVG_Translation_Campaign_2019_in_India/Participants
.

If you would like to organise a small onsite event, please sign up at:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:SVG_Translation_Campaign_2019_in_India/Offline_Events,
before 21st January 2019. So that it'll help us to finalise the budget.

It might sound confusing, but all the resources required for smooth
participation will be online far before the campaign starts on 21st
February 2019. If you have any questions, please email me or post at
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_talk:SVG_Translation_Campaign_2019_in_India
.

Thanks,

Rajeeb Dutta

Re: [PLUG] CoFSuG and FOSS and PLUG

2018-04-20 Thread Sudhanwa Jogalekar
Dear Shirish Agarwal,

I suppose some of your queries are already answered on this thread.

>From your messages, it seems that you are confusing between SICSR and PLUG.
It is sad and unfortunate that even after being in PLUG for so many years,
you are confusing between these two completely different entities.

PLUG does not have any control or influence on what SICSR people (staff,
teachers, students etc) think, do, communicate and commit.
Looks like you are pretty upset by some interactions, commitments with/by
SICSR. If those were related to FOSS and worth considering implementation,
you could have come to PLUG to get some support to interact with SICSR. I
don't think that has happened anytime before from your side. PLUG is/was
always there to interact with any organisation-college or commercial or
otherwise for any FOSS activities. And to some extent for the open data,
open knowledge etc etc.

PLUG has been associated with other colleges in the past. There was a
conference FOSSUMMIT in MIT that happened some years back. In one of the
engineering college, we have inaugurated their internal LUG 2 times !!! I
have been to various teacher training programs related to FOSS many times.
We have been participating in CMDA expo for many many years.

Those are just some examples of PLUG work as in various talks/conferences
etc. Thats what your concern seems to be.

There had been much discussion about the mailing list and you can find it
on archives somewhere. There were valid reasons when the mailing list rules
were very strict. But that was a pretty old story. Now the list is
completely open with no restrictions.

To answer all your queries, it will take a discussion of at least 3-4 hours
and I dont have the patience of typing out things for you.
So, feel free to meet me or any other old pluggie who knows the history so
as to clear your doubts.

You can carry on this thread further. I can give in some inputs wherever
possible.

I believe you will be connected to the net all the time when using such
tickers. Also assuming you will be using some browser for the ticker.

A simple google search for "Indian stock market ticker
{desktop/android/} gave me enough sensible results. Many of these
tickers can be customised as per user needs.

Not able to understand why the ticker has to be under FOSS. In any case,
live data is freely available but need to pay for the same to get it in
your required formats.

Looks like you are part of SICSR and have more internal information than
other pluggies.
As far as I know, the dates are 16,17 Feb 2018. You can take this as THE
announcement !!

I do not have any idea about the website updation as it is handled by
Symbi. If you have any updates in the same, please share with all of us.

Like Arun mentioned, GNUNIFY is normally done on second week (Friday,
Saturday)of February every year. The tradition continues !!

Hope this clears some doubts.

Re: [PLUG] About password strength

2017-12-22 Thread Sudhanwa Jogalekar
Hi,

Dear Arun,

Thank you for sharing those links. I have seen these on so many Indian
sites including our own Income Tax Department ( to file ITR Returns)
that it has become a joke.

There is a term called 'Security theater'
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Security_theater which is apt for this
occasion.

To top it with the new Firefox release, you cannot even use addons
like Certificate Patrol to see what kinds of TLS encryption the site
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/certificate-patrol/ . I
have seen lots of reputable sites using pretty poor ciphers for
encryption and for end-users there is no reasonable way for them to
take a call as to what's best or needs to be changed, including most
of the private and public banks.

Security is all about the risk that you can take. It has nothing much to do
with anything else.

If you are covered under some assurance/insurance from the bank or other
such authorities, you should not bother much about the criticality of the
cyphers etc.

It's your (users) call to accept the risk or not.

BTW

Even RBI uses some certificate issued by private parties. (Not Indian)

Regards
Sudhanwa

FWIW I have written to some banks whose customer I am and had been
thinking of shifting to digitial platforms but haven't received any
sort of substantial answers from them.

What you have highlighted is that only 0.0001 percent fools like us
want security and are a bit paranoid like us. The rest just go about
their merry way.

I don't have solutions other than building awareness on the bottom of
the pyramid but that is kind of slow death. When people are ready to
give their fb usernames and passwords at the drop of the hat without
doing any social engineering than this feels like a long task

I do wish we had better ways to enhance and mass-reach on sensitive
topics like these.

2017-07-07 Thread Sudhanwa Jogalekar
COEP and/or IIIT in Pune could be a good choice in the near future.
I saw an ad in the newspaper today from COEP for supply of 1000 and 300 meg
of bandwidth for these organisations.
God only knows why they need so much of bandwidth. Can be utilised for
hosting mirrors for sure.

A simple mp3 music player (lookalike of that matchbox size American product
) is available for about 200 Rs. Worth spending that kind of money for
trial.

It all depends on your liking of the GUI environment. Debian gives you all
those options. Select the one which you are comfortable with. Debian
remains the same in the background.

Or else, as suggested, try various different environments using those live

Not sure if you are referring "Evince". (https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Evince)

It can show multiple pages-not just 2.
Tried it for multipage view. Works well for me.

If you have not purchased laptop already, there are some good options
available currently on various ecommerce sites.
Found a suitable one here:
http://www.shopclues.com/acer-aspire-e5-es1-571-558z-core-i5-4th-gen-4-gb-1-tb-hdd-linux-notebook-nx.gcesi.022.html

Intel core I5, 4GB, 1 TB. Ubuntu . International warranty, onsite support
!! Only negative side seems to be the weight. But normally if you need high
battery life and bigger screen, weight will be high.

That does not really matter. The server might also change from time to time
keeping the username, domain name same. As such IMAP may not be suitable(As
suggested by some others)

Looks like Thunderbird is used by many.

[PLUG] email client

2016-08-03 Thread Sudhanwa Jogalekar
Hi,

There is a need to use a desktop based email client instead of webmail.
User is not familiar with CLI, so pine and mutt are out of question.

The requirement is that the users mails should/can be moved across various
operating systems/Linux distros or even various Windows versions. That too
without any data loss.

Can you please suggest some good email client for this purpose. Please
share your experiences in this activity of usage, migration.

Not to forget about the multiple accounts across various domains and the
keys.

Please raise your concerns to Hindustan Times who are giving the awards.
Followup with MHRD is necessary for any kind of reply and/or action.

I can help in contacting Mr. P. A. Inamdar (of Poona college and other
associate institutes). He is pro FOSS.

IIRC, some years back, we had received some copies of BOSS during some
event and we distributed them.
That time it was not a good polished product. Full of bugs and
usabilitiy issues. I tried it myself and was not happy. Was not worth
shifting from my usual distribution.

Later on, the project halted/shifted from IRC-FOSS(I think they were
the initial developers). Probably C-DAC is working on it now.

I dont think the developers have seriously considered the requirements
of Indians to make the distro. Actually, it is very difficult to
crystalise any such requirements. Probably, now it has just become one
of the projects for C-DAC.

Apart from this, views/pespectives expressed by Amarendra and others
are also fine considering they talk about it as a tool. We had a
different thread on this and you can check it in archives. No further
comment right now.

I am looking forward to buying laptops around 20K. The online shopping sites
are having many of them having AMD Kabini processor having speeds of 1 GHz
 to 1.5 GHz.

Also loads of P4 and Celeron dual core stuff is out there.

What are your reviews if you have used the same.

My main purpose will be Running a LAMP set-up (XFCE type desktop). (MySQL
and Apache will be started when needed).

Majority of the time it will be a Mozilla Firefox with around 5-8 tabs open.

considering a laptop life of around 3 years (any thing more than that will
be bonus period) I am not interested in spending any more than 20-22K INR.

I have Thinkpad x120e (11.6 screen) which has AMD APU E350 (low end
compared to Kabini ones), with 4GB RAM. Found this good enough for
multi purpose use, doing all above without much of cpu load factor.
Any dual core cpu or APU outperforming a E350 , I would say is worth
 it.

Online shopping sites give you enough to sort the models, but some
 suggestions:
  - see that you can add more ram (there should be extra slot - some
sub 20K ones have only 1 slot and not configurable)
  - 6 cell battery
  - HDD replacable - ie you can change without voiding warranty. You
may later want to put in a SSD which will easily double the speed.
  - if possible screen size 14 or less
  - would be bonus if it has USB 3.0 ports.

Even though you may not require virtualisation today, that could be a
requirement anytime soon.
Consider a machine that can give you Virtualisation facilities. The
machines mentioned here may not provide the same. The price will also
increase accordingly.

Re: [PLUG] Why I won't be speaking at FOSSsumMIT 2104

Hi,

 Folks,

I was scheduled to give a talk at FOSSsumMIT 2104, but I was asked to use a
 Open
Source License compliant operating system to give the talk. I have blogged
 about
it in detail here - http://adityalaghate.in/no-to-symbolism.html

Read your blog. Could not understand the main reason of disagreement.
Probably it is the usage of Open Source Operating System for your presentation.

Also, your focus is more on the technology part. Conference focus
is/was FOSS. Technology comes as a part of it.

I think the basic difference starts there itself.
Nobody has objected to your code or the presentations or your
contribution to FOSS.
The conference being a FOSS conference, everything needs to be under
FOSS. It is as simple as that.

Well, there could be exceptions if the requirement of the topic needs
non-FOSS stuff. eg. if a talk is on FOSS tools to check security of
Linux distros on VMs running on Windows , then Windows will be
required and will be allowed in the presentation.

Looks like the requirements for the talk was sent to you very late. I
think this was a mistake. Considering that this event happened for the
first time, this is part of some mistakes that happened. Lets ignore
them. I am sure this is part of learning for the organisors.

Please note that PLUG's stand for FOSS still remains the same. I
remember that in one of the Gnunify, I helped a speaker to change his
presentation from windows-powerpoint to Linux-Openoffice. This
happened some 2 hours before his talk. He was a senior person from
Intel who were one of the major sponsors for the conference. He had
landed in Pune just a few hours before his presentation and the
organisors had informed the speakers well in advance about the FOSS
requirements for presentations.

Mayuresh has also added some good points in his mail.

Any further discusisons are welcome. The brainstorming gives some good
ideas and thoughts for further work and organising good conferences.

With deep regret and anguish, I wish to notify the members of VALU
about sad and sudden demise of Sunil Beta Baskar, a gentle geek who
knew the core Linux source in depth. Colossal loss for people in Pune
who believe in Linux and Open Source.

Reply to this email to comment on this post.

Sunil was a real geek and a very techie person. He was active on PLUG
mailing list and used to come to the meetings. Some months back, he
conducted some workshops on Kernel programming in Pune University. In
Nov. 2012, he had a session in the PLUG meeting itself.

Till a few months back, he was in KPIT, Pune and then he shifted back
to his place in Thanjavur.

His untimely death is a great loss to PLUG and the FOSS community.
May god rest his soul in peace.

[PLUG] Updated Aksharyogini font release in Open Font License

2013-11-01 Thread Sudhanwa Jogalekar
Dear friends,

You may be aware that we (my family) have released a font family earlier.
Here is some background if you are not aware of it.

On the first death Anniversary of Yogini Joglekar(my aunt), our family
released AksharYogini (Normal) Font on 1st Nov. 2006. This font is
primarily for Marathi language but can also be used for Hindi (for any
language using Devanagari). It also has English support. Later on, on the
occasion of Gudhipadwa (Chaitra Shuddha 1, 1931; that is 27th March 2009) ,
we released the additional fonts to complete the AksharYogini font
family. This font family was/is made available on the site
http://aksharyogini.sudhanwa.com for free usage/distribution/sharing.

Today, on the occasion of Eighth Death Anniversary of Yogini Joglekar, we
are now releasing an updated AksharYogini font. This font is also
available on the same website http://aksharyogini.sudhanwa.com

This is an updated font and has support for the new (MS Windows) operating
systems where the internal mechanism for font rendering is changed. Also,
it has additional characters for the current Unicode standard and the Rupee
Sign is also included.

Most important is the licensing. The new release is under the Open Font
License. As such, all Linux distributions will be able to freely use it in
their packaging.

Please feel free to use, share, distribute the new font. You can download
it from http://aksharyogini.sudhanwa.com .

Give us feedback on my email id or the official id for the font
aksharyogini at sudhanwa.com You can also comment on the guestbook on the
website.
Do share this news and also the font.

Wishing you a Very Happy Diwali !!

Thanks and regards
-Sudhanwa

 Greetings HW enthusiasts,

The motherboard of one of my system is RIP.When I took out the CPU

I have tried to separate the CPU from the heat sink without much

Any suggestion to resolve this 'sticky' issue would be much appreciated.

IPA(Iso-propyl-alcohol) may help in the cleanup.
