[SlimDevices: Plugins] what is the point of buying the SB Receiver or Controller??

2009-12-21 Thread huytere

I have an old laptop and decided to turn it into a squeezebox rig. I
registered an account at mysqueezebox.com, installed Squeezebox Server
on the old laptop, installed Squeezeplayer on the old laptop. Then I
configured the SB system to use my Pandora account, my Last.FM account,
and added 10 of my favorite Shoutcast stations. Everything is working
perfectly! I put the laptop on top of my Onkyo amplifier and wired the
headphone out directly to the audio input on the Onkyo receiver. Again,
perfect sucess!!

Everything is working so great!!

What is the point of buying the SB Receiver!!?? Since a PC is required
to run SB Server, I do not understand the point of buying the SB
REceiver! It seems very stupid device to buy when an old laptop could be
used "all in one".

Am I missing something

Sound Quality... (admittedly for you that probably isn't a reason)

You want to see the signal path BEFORE it gets onto a CD/vinyl...it
ain't what you'd call minimal...
SB Touch Beta (wired) - TACT 2.2X (Linear PSU) + Good Vibrations S/W -
MF Triplethreat(Audiocom full mods) - Linn 5103 - Aktiv 5.1 system (6x
LK140's, ESPEK/TRIKAN/KATAN/SEIZMIK 10.5), Townsend Supertweeters, Blue

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] what is the point of buying the SB Receiver or Controller??

2009-12-21 Thread huytere

THanks Phil!

ok, so if I understand, the main reasons to buy the Receiver would be
to get the device closer to the audio amplifier, and do it wirelessly...
it is very convenient for some users I guess.

And, as you said sound quality. So, I could just build my own PC,
buy a good sound card with SPDIF output and wire it directly to the
SPDIF on my Onkyo and in that case the DAC is not even being used
because the signal path stays in the digital realm the whole time!

Ok. Next reason: synchronization of several of them. Will not work well
with your PC because it's not a real time system.
Others: looks, convenience, power consumption, noise (fans etc.)

Hi Chris, nice good clean code. Today is my first day using SB and I
want to write a player/GUI for it that will run in Adobe Air/Flex. I
have been googling like crazy trying to find documentation on the "CLI"
telnet control interface and cannot find it! I have seen your CLI calls
in CliSqueezeService.java and it helps me understand a little bit about
the CLI. Do you have a cheatsheet or any kind of documentation on the
CLI protocol for issuing commands? How did you figure it all out!?!?
Help, please send me something...

Davep is right.
You probably did click away that help animation that explained this
when you first ran the app. You can replay this through
Help->Quick Tutorials->Now Playing

The players screen is not only good for switching players, this is also
where you select the server or set things like Alarms etc.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] what is the point of buying the SB Receiver or Controller??

2009-12-21 Thread huytere

Ok, understood. For me, that is not a problem because my homemade SB rig
will have its SPDIF output feeding directly into a Video Storm 16x16
SPDIF Audio Matrix Switcher
(http://www.video-storm.com/proddetail.asp?prod=CMX1616V) and this will
allow me to send the audio to every room in my house. Every room in the
house has a dedicated Onkyo receiver.

In my previous question, I did not tell this because I wanted the
scenario/question to be clear.

Are there any other disadvantages to just running everything on a
"single always on home built PC"??

I will be controlling the SB PC with Crestron control system, and be
using my own handheld remotes (TPMC3X). You can see the control module
and GUI examples here:
http://www.controlworks.com/Modules/Product.aspx?pid=60

Are there any other disadvantages I should know about?

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] what is the point of buying the SB Receiver or Controller??

2009-12-21 Thread huytere

For the "looks", I am not worried about it. It will be installed into a
proper AV cabinet. All the amplifiers, av matrix switcher, crestron
system is located centrally in the equipment room of my house. It is a
whole house AV distribution system. So the "sources" will be wii,
satellite tv, bluray, squeezebox pc, security camera DVR, etc.

Hope that makes sense. I am playing devils advocate so I can understand
more about squeezebox. Is there any chance that the audio will have
synch issues if the server and player are located on the same physical
machine? In my mind, the performance should be "even better" if it is
all located on a single machine.

Thanks for the quick replies. I am on the same wavelength as you
eventually everybody in the family will have their own dedicated SB
Receiver. All the SB Receivers will be located in the centralized AV
cabinet. That way they could have everything setup like they love
it

If mom goes to the kitchen, she could use the Crestron control system
to control the output of SBmom receiver device to ouput the digital
audio thru the AV matrix switcher so it plays in the kithcne only. Then
as the food cooks she could relax in family room and the audio will flow
into there.

meanwhile, dad is in the office listenting to his dedicated sb
receiver

The sb receiver really is priced perfectly at $149!

Well, your system isn't exactly what one would build if you now started
with an SB setup.
In that case you would put one in every room and add active speakers to
that.
Good ones in the living room, small ones in the office and you might
just use an SB Radio in the kitchen and bathroom...

What you are suggesting should work I think. I don't understand the
system you have but you could also place the receiver in each of the
rooms where listening is done, right next to the relevant amplifier in
that room and the server software can then send wireless or wired to
each of the receiver the music that each receiver is requesting.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: SqueezeIR - A Generic Infra-Red Remote Control Applet for the Duet's SBC

2009-12-21 Thread indifference_engine

You're almost there. The section look ok but the bit
should be outside of it. Therefore, the tail-end of your file should
look like this:

Code:

  Listen To Classic

  Listen To Classic

  Turn Everything ON

  true

  PRONTO
  AMP ON

  PRONTO
SB3 ON

  10
  PRONTO
  AUX

  PRONTO
  STEREO

  PRONTO
  PLASMA OFF

  All Off

  PRONTO
  AMP OFF

  PRONTO
  SB3 OFF

This should mean that when the "PRONTO" profile is active in the
SqueezeIR settings then the "Listen To Classic" menu will be available
from Extras->SqueezeIR. Incidentally, there is a LIRC file for the SB3
which would have made your section alot smaller. Also, if you
give the "PRONTO" profile the same name as your SB3 has in SqueezeCenter
then it will automatically be activated whenever you connect your
controller to it.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Custom Browse Order Issue

2009-12-21 Thread Gabba

Hello,

I have been using Custom Browse and Custom Scan and am immensely
impressed. I can now browse my classical collection much more
efficiently. Thanks a lot.

I was wondering though, is there anyway that I can have, for instance,
Beethoven's Piano Sonatas (Composer>Work>Performer from online guide) in
their actual order (1...2...3...4.) rather than having them
alphabetically ordered by the order in which they are scanned and
subsequently the name of the pianist?

I have only a few of them performed by Daniel Barenboim and those ones
are at the top of the menu despite also having all sonatas performed by
Wilhelm Kempff. I have the "sort numeric" boxed ticked because without
it the order reads from the start:
"No.23 (no idea why it is first)
No.1
No.10
...
No.19
No.2
No.21
... and so forth"

Sorry that this is hard to explain but the menu appears like so (with
"sort numeric"):
"No.14, No.8, No.20, No.23, No.1, No.2, No.4, No.3, No.5 and correct
onwards"

It seems that they are being ordered in terms of which are being
scanned first. Any ideas as how to remedy?

Thanks.

I find both the Web UI and the Touch UI - and even the IR remote UI on
the Touch - perfectly fine for navigating/displaying my music
collection.

My point was that I can still use all of this if Logitech give up on
"quality audio" - I can still use the Logitech UI's with the Linn
hardware - the best of both worlds. At a cost.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] musicIP headless with mac os x?

2009-12-21 Thread Shepardos

MusicIP tags are not the problem but how do you run this plugin with Mac
OS? Under Windows there is a so called "headless" mode, where you can
run MusicIP without starting the GUI.

How this works on Mac OS X?

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPeng support thread

2009-12-21 Thread fphredd

I have a bunch of live music, most without any kind of artwork (all
flac). When playing the music that does have artwork, live or
commercial studio release, I am not able to 'scrub' forward in songs. I
move the 'scrubber' and the music stops and resets at the beginning of
the song. Music without artwork works fine.

I have compared with the Logitech controller and that does not have the
issue. FYI, the music compared between ipeng and controller was the
same music but on different NAS boxes (one was copied from the other).

Any ideas?

Thanks for the awesome app!! $ well spent is an understatement :D

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Inguz and 7.4

2009-12-21 Thread miklorsmith

I think the plugin changes the stream to 24-bit, don't know if the
frequency changes too.

Update for me -

My normal speakers are expensive Zu Definition 2s, wideband drivers
supplemented at the very top and bottom with supertweeters and
subwoofers. But most of the music is without crossovers, characterized
by a huge, dynamic colorful presentation.

The speakers that got me oriented toward the Definitions are still in
the house - homebuilt single-driver, bass-reflex boxes per the "Big Fun
Box" recipe on the TNT Audio website. The drivers are old hemp 8"ers
from Omega.

These normally live in my garage. In the right (small) room, with
sufficient room reinforcement they sound great, miniatures of my big
'uns. The wideband signature is there in spades but they do not have
nearly the refinement. And, a peaky presence band reveals they're not
cut from the same, refined cloth.

I've had these speakers in my big system for a bit and really, really
wanted to set them up with Inguz, which apparently doesn't work with
.cue files. I kept my 'backup' set with .cue and .wav files but for
'play' I sliced up to individual files with Foobar, updated to the SBS
7.5 daily, and spent about an hour doing measurements with Room EQ
Wizard and some pink noise played back through the SB (as opposed to
REW).

Net result? Holy friggin' cow! I'm not one for hyperbole but these
$200 speakers are utterly phenomenal once the frequency response is
smoothed out. My neighbor knows my main system better than anyone but
me, I have him over once a month or so for long, late listening
sessions. He came over Friday afternoon for a couple hours and he was
blown away. The similarities with the big rig are undeniable.

Of course, I couldn't EQ below their natural dropoff at 50 hz and they
don't have the same supertweeter sparkle as their 55x more-expensive
bretheren but I dialed in a slightly boosted 50 - 200 hz range (better
than flat to most ears)and bass is most satisfying with most music now
where it was nearly absent before.

It is beyond sad to me that this software appears to be on the road to
deprecation and I'll soon have to start choosing between staying current
with my software and keeping the Inguz plugin which I'll reiterate is
THE MOST important plugin of all to this audiophile. It makes your
system sound better. What other plugin (or source for that matter) can
do that?

Anyhoo, wanted to report in and bump the topic up again. Crusaders
unite! :)

Artwork should not have anything to do with it.
Which file format is the music that does not work in?

OK, my post about the misleading attachment was misleading. :)
The attachment is basically accurate. But, here's a non-misleading
version.
The player menu does not have a Date and Time option like you have.

A couple of questions for you:
What version of Sqeezebox Server are you running?
What version of SuperDateTime are you running?

Thanks,

I know some of the Aberdeen city exchanges have been enabled for LLU
with O2/Be, have a look on samknows.com to see if yours is. They don't
do much in the way of traffic shaping or limiting. Great value as well,
especially if you have an O2 phone.

I would not expect it to work with Squeezeslave.
Does it work with the Controller? Do you know what the Controller does?

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] IR Blaster on SC 7.4.1

2009-12-21 Thread lrossouw

The plugin is available via the extension downloader. Its usually
simplest to install plugins through there.

So first delete the plugin from where you put it.

Then go to http://localhost:9000, then server settings, then plugins.
Look for the plugin on that page. If it is not there then go to the
bottom of the page and paste in
http://www.gwendesign.com/sc/repo/repo.xml and click apply. The plugin
should now appear. Select it and apply. You may need to restart your
server.

If you install it this way, you should a) get the newest version, b) it
will be installed correctly and c) it will be kept updated.
