I don't think pippin is handling support he's merely being helpful when
he can because he's a thoroughly nice chap :-)

Your final sentence is bang on the money, shame really because there's
still areas where SC is better than others IMO.

Hi Triode,

Do you have any plans for introducing the new plugin on other platforms
like armhf?
Or are you waiting to finalize it before you publish it to other
systems?

Hi Adrian,

it seems to be a network problem, the songs started to play.

I now checked version 2.3.0 alpha, both controlling the SB Touches from
the LMS web interface and directly using the Touch interface.

Here is what happens using the web interface:
A LAN connected SB Touch works for nearly one song, afterwards it starts
skipping and playing only the first couple of seconds of the other songs
in the playlist. Also the display of the SB Touch doesn't show the
actual title information.
Wifi connected SB Touches don't respond at all if remote controlled via
the web interface.

This is what happens if a Wifi connected SB Touch is used directly:
A selected playlist seems to play, hurray! :-) But again the actual song
information is not updated. The display returns to showing the clock
after some moments.

Below the log for 2.3.0, 2.2.17 (again) in the next post, as I reached
the maximal character count.

Spotify 2.3.0 alpha: Streaming from Spotify Stalled / Streaming from
Spotify stalled before end of track, rate OK

Sorry for the delay since your reply, the iPod 5 I'd got on eBay was

Classic both on an iPod 5 with the lightning connector in the Sony dock
and also on an iPhone 5 as the remote controller, I noticed another odd
thing. The volume slider on the iPod still has no effect on speaker
volume, but if I adjust the volume using the slider on the remote device
then the volume does change (up/down within the max of the current
setting on the player), but then after a few seconds it jumps back to
 original setting. Odd.

If you say remote device do you mean the remote iPeng? That's not
really a surprise. although it's probably a bit difficult to explain...
Due to the various gain commands that need aggregating into a single
value the slider can get out of sync with the actual system volume when
remotely controlled, there's an additional mixer in there. The slider
shows the resulting volume which is what you want - as long as the
volume control works.

I assume it only works in one direction, probably down? (or is it up? I
always get a knot in my brain when trying to comprehend this...)

Out of interest, do you know what's happening with Squeeze Commander?
You (or another guy called Pippin) seem to be handling support for it
but it looks like the app has become defunct. You can still buy it but
the Developer seems to have walked away.

Owen Smith wrote:
Is Squeeze Commander the official app from Logitech or another third
party one? If it's Logitech that explains why they've walked away.

It's not Logitech, Logitech's App is called Logitech Squeezebox
Controller.
And no, I'm not doing support for it.
I have worked together with the developer of SqueezeCommander in the
past but all but lost contact since a few years.

He eventually had to choose between his primary job and his family and
putting more work into SqueezeCommander. The problem is (and I believe
it _still_ is a problem until this day) that on Android you don't make
enough money with Apps that you can afford to at least level down your
first job to justify all the work that is going into the App.
He had to make a decision.

And if you know that SqueezeCommander - being the best selling Android
Squeezebox App and being cheaper than iPeng and Android having some
70-80% market share as to the number of devices - never came beyond
around a third of the number of users iPeng has then you get an idea of
the dimension.

All those people who claim to love Android because everything is free
there and the devices are so nice and cheap should be aware that this
comes at a price. The price being that in the (not even all so) long
run, they will be pretty much dependent on the business models of big
corporate vendors who have other business models than selling Apps
(usually advertising) and who can afford to give away Apps for free.
Like Google, Facebook,... But these people should not complain about
these corporation's behavior then, that have to somehow recoup their
investment. It's up to you what you choose...

2014-02-20 Thread Owen Smith

I know a games App developer who tried paid for games. They did one
Android game and the networks stats they put into it reported that the
number of copies running was 20 times the number they had sold. Half of
those running were in China. iOS wasn't quite as bad, but even so there
were 3 times the number running as they had sold, and again half of the
running copies were in China. So then they tried in game purchases, but
that didn't work any better. Either they got no in game purchases, or
they got a load of faked ones on jailbroken devices. It turned out to be
impossible to make money on paid for games apps, so they stopped doing
them. Their core business is XBox, PC and Playstation games and that
actually makes money.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPeng support thread

2014-02-20 Thread pippin

That's interesting in two respects:
1. So far I thought that Games was one if the few Margret segments for
Apps that actually worked (the other being niche Apps like iPeng on iOS
where you have a somewhat specialized but involved user base).
2. I never considered piracy an issue but this might indeed be different
for games.
But generally I still feel that most people who go all the way to pirate
an App would not have paid for it anyway.
And regarding the number if downloads vs. purchases: iPeng runs at
around 2 downloads per sale and that's perfectly normal on iOS because
you can install an App on as many devices as you like.
Heck, if I really use an App I'll definitely install it on at least four
or five devices so two to three is really still in the expected range.
10 isn't, though.

Don't worry: I've added that rather verbose logging to see what
architectures people are having problems with. The plugin should still
work as expected, albeit slower for some use cases (search). The message
means that no binary module has been found for some sorting routine. But
it'll fall back to a slower perl implementation offering the same feature.

Now the good news is that you might get that faster version working by
updating LMS to the latest 7.7.4 or 7.8 nightly build. I added a fix for
this issue a few days ago.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Smart Mix plugin

2014-02-20 Thread Michael Herger

I have the problem, that most tracks smartmix picks from deezer-plugin
are preview-tracks. I see urls like the following on the debug-log:
http://cdn-preview-0.deezer.com/stream/05f148909070521a52ba9a6b64ddf783-0.mp3

Could you guys please try again? I've implemented Deezer's alternative
track offering, which should play alternative versions of the same track
if one wasn't available in your region or whatever. It won't work in all
cases, but should considerably improve the situation.

Plus I think they had a problem a day or two ago. I couldn't play
anything, and it's working fine again today...

Running iPeng 7 on iPhone 4S, ios 7.0.4. Starting Flappy Bird from cold
pauses iPeng. If I go back in and start the music up again, all is well.
Also, if Flappy Bird is resident in memory, restarting it causes no
problem.

No big deal, just a mild irritant. Thought I'd mention it in case there
is an easy fix :)

What are you running today? I bet you are on 7.7.something. 7.7.4
shouldn't be a problem.

Is Squeeze Commander the official app from Logitech or another third

Squeeze Commander was basically the iPeng of Android squeezebox
controllers, and has a quite similar interface. Developed by
Flatterman I think, but no longer developed or supported. I have a
vague memory from years ago that iPeng SC had a gentleman's agreement
to stay on their respective platforms, but maybe I just dreamed it.

Logitech Squeezebox Controller is the 'official' Logitech app, works
well as far as it goes but of no use for Playlists or anything Advanced.
It does however have volume Up/Down buttons next to the volume slider -
not going to happen on iPeng :(

Logitech also supply the free Squeezeplay app for PCs (officially still
a Beta, and not going anywhere), for when it's just too much effort to
reach over and pick up your iPhone. For those times, I now use Orange
Squeeze, which has I guess become the main paid app on Android. You
install BlueStack (free for now) then buy run OS or one of the free
apps through it.

I use SqueezePlay on my laptop. For a beta it's pretty good. My main
gripe is I have a large screen but the window can't be made larger. It's
clearly pretending to be a Duet Controller.

Well. On the upside I do have an idea about this. The downside is that
it's a bit of work...

It's definitely the audi session, probably the GameCenter popup causing
it.
You can see the same thing with Apple's Music App. No idea why it
doesn't happen on iPad but I don't have FlappyBird there.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPeng support thread

2014-02-20 Thread ianto39

pippin wrote:
If you say remote device do you mean the remote iPeng? That's not
really a surprise. although it's probably a bit difficult to explain...
Due to the various gain commands that need aggregating into a single
value the slider can get out of sync with the actual system volume when
remotely controlled, there's an additional mixer in there. The slider
shows the resulting volume which is what you want - as long as the
 volume control works.

I assume it only works in one direction, probably down? (or is it up? I
always get a knot in my brain when trying to comprehend this...)

I use iPeng Classic on the iPhone 5 to control iPeng Classic on the iPod
5 that's connected to the lightning jack in the Sony speaker. I also use
Orange Squeeze on the PC to control the iPod. Adjusting the volume on
iPhone or OrgSqz changes the speaker volume up down, down as far as 0
or back up to the original volume level set by the Sony volume buttons.
But then, after a few seconds (iPeng) or when the volume control
disappears (OrgSqz) the volume goes back to the original volume. I was
mentioning it in the context of you explaining that the Sony must not
support volume control through the standard interface, because it
seemed like at some level the Sony is allowing iPeng to control the
volume. I'm sure it's of no use to me, just thought you might find it
intriguing, I'll either connect via the headphone socket as suggested or
fall back on the more traditional Sneakerware method of volume
adjustment.

It's ironic, or galling, that Slimserver got a new lease of life
courtesy off one of those big corporate vendors... and then got a bullet
in the head.

I like that Android at least has a way of running apps on Windows, I
don't see Apple allowing that, but I also don't see me switching to it
for now, though iOS 7 has me sorely tempted, I just can't love those
colors etc. I always get the feeling using Android that I end up
navigating in circles, then I get dizzy. I always thought it's most
powerful feature was the Menu button, that the Developers could tie
options etc to, and that it's weakest feature was the Menu button, so
they're not pushed to design neat, minimalist, intuitive ways of doing
things from a main screen. The menu button might get you nice big Volume
Up/Down buttons though :)
