But the main differentiating feature of Google Cast is that NOTHING is being streamed through your battery powered, WiFi enabled mobile device. Instead, the casting device (i.e., your smartphone or your Chrome browser) initiates an internet stream. The player, on the other hand, is being told to receive and play back that internet stream. Thus, Google Cast is battery friendly for the device acting as a remote control. However, Google Cast has two disadvantages (IMHO). First, a sufficiently stable and fast internet connection is always required. Second, the Google Cast SDK is proprietary and heavily controlled by Google (e.g., every app supported Google Cast must be registered and Google reserves the right to monitor what you do with the app as well as with the receiving device). poing's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=63617 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102853 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins
Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Google starts Google Cast for Audio
In my mind, this seams great for casual listeners that mainly listen to music through their smartphone but sometimes want to stream it to a speaker to make it possible for everyone else in the same room to hear the same thing. For this use case it's also great to get an alternative to AirPlay for people where an iOS devices isn't an option. It's good that Google realise that everything doesn't necessarily have to be played through a TV. We will have to see how far they will develop this since with no screen they have nowhere to display their ads, which is their main source of revenue. I wonder if it works if a friend wants to play something on your speaker and you haven't given him/her access to your WiFi network ? Will these devices offer a adhoc WiFi connection so it's possible for anyone to connect to them directly and play something without giving people access to your whole network ? I'm still not convinced AirPlay, Bluetooth, Google Cast is the right solution for continuous listening or streaming to a whole house, in these use cases it just feels wrong to depend on everything being streamed through a battery powered WiFi enabled mobile device which have to be powered on and connected during the whole listening session. Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPeng support thread
Got the thouch player. So much easier to set up. Tanks for help. Duet goes for sale. For the last tree weeks I've done some tests. Auralic and Simple Audio. None of them offer the nice iPad Interface the 3 Squeecebox apps offer. The Auralic did not have a working internet radio. Both of them had problem accessing my files on my Windows 2008 server. ( And PC as well) The Wimp Interface on Auralic was very nice, and extremly quick. Sonos has never been an option for me, due to lack of hi-res. So I've never checked how the idevice Interface is. I can't understand why Logitech stoped this fantastic product. Maybe they was ahead of their time. I've even see the Touch is available on Amazon for almost $1000. I whish is was so simple to just order 10 000 new units from the Chinise factory, and start selling them for $499 :) R1200CL's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=63832 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=51929 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins
Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Google starts Google Cast for Audio
Well, I would carefully disagree. This Google Audio Cast might actually be a great thing, because it would make things easier for Software devs, Hardware builders and consumers...at least if it works the way I think it does. The best usecase would be, IMHO, to create a small box with Wifi, a low-power SoC, good DAC and standard connectors, so, Analogue, Digital Coax and Optical. This little box would then enanble any active speakers, amp or compact hifi device to act as a Google Audio Cast device. Now, streaming services like Wimp, Qobuz, Deezer and Google Play Music could simply offer the standard "Cast" option in their apps. Same for TuneIn and other platforms for radio streaming. The Smartphone initiates an action, and the google audio box does the rest, communicating with the servers on it's own, using the standard protocols. For streaming services this could be a major help, because they don't have to rely on manufacturers implementing their service into a device. Any Google Audio Cast device will work, all they have to do is offer it in their apps. Hardware Manufacturers also don't have to deal with all the different services anymore, they simply offer AirPlay and Google Cast, the rest is handled by the apps and the Cast protocols. And for consumers it's also a good deal. No need for a local server (if you dont' use local media that is) and all features of the respective streaming service should work on any Cast enabled device. No need to wait and hope that new features will get implemented by Sonos/Logitech/Bluesound/Philips/whoever... So, that's my interpretation. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe I misunderstand the whole thing. Time will tell... Airplay streaming from my iphone to a group of players does not seem to be possible. When the squeezeboxes are synchronized to a group, while I am starting an airplay stream to one of the synchronized players, both players stop immediately and I always get the error message that the players are waiting to be synchronized. Has anybody got an idea how to configure or modify the plugin in order to enable streaming via airplay to a group of players? Anyway I´m very happy that I got this plugin working on my raspberry PI. Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] IR Blaster with Touch: Emitter problems
Thanks, Felix. I actually downloaded a .conf file for my AVR and when that didn't work I tried one for my XBox 360. After that didn't work, I thought I would then try to keep it "simple" - little did I know I was trying the impossible :). I looked at my emitter with a digital camera as you suggested and it does appear to be flashing so it seems that commands are being emitted. I will try to create a .conf file for my specific AVR since the .conf I downloaded may not have the correct commands (I have an Onkyo TX-NR709 and the most recent one available was for the TX-SR607). The XBox 360 should be universal so I'm a little stumped why that one doesn't work. Also, my AVR has a direct IR input port which I tried before with a direct connection but I will try again after I verify the correct .conf for my AVR. cncb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8501 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102821 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

Yes every controller like for example iPeng interfaces mostly with the server and thus controll of any squeezebox is the same ( including third party and software variants ) Ethernet works on both products , but Touch is easier to handle as it has it own interface ( touch screen ) you don't need to configure it trough the controller as you did with your duet . Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] IR Blaster with Touch: Emitter problems
Hi cncb I think mono plugs should work with SB Touch but I am not 100% sure. (I know for sure they do not work with Transporter due to the fact how the IR out port is wired.) But you can do an simple test. Just point a digital camera at the IR emitter while hitting the test button - that should show you at least whether the IR LED lights up or not. As for the self test back to SB Touch. The idea to keep it simple first is great. Unfortunately this test doesn't work with SB Touch as it can only do one thing at the time, either receive or send IR commands, but not both. So it is expected that SB Touch doesn't react to its own IR blasting. You'll need another SB product to run a test with the supplied slim.conf. And no, there is nothing in addition to do to switch the headphone jack from audio to IR - that is handled by the IR Blaster plugin. I assume you've already found this: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/IR_Blaster One important piece of information from here is that SB Touch cannot blast RAW files.
