Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Beta version of SvrPowerControl

2009-03-05 Thread chenghs

First of all, thanks for such a wonderful plug-in... I read through the
thread and found how happy many people are with it... I am running a
Wind PC with Ubuntu Server 8.04. I have been trying very hard to find a
solution to get my server sleep after idle for a while. But so far, no
luck. I have two questions:

1.Does this plugin work on Ubuntu server? My Wind PC is running Ubuntu
server8.04.

2. Does this plugin only work with SqueezeCenter? Without installing
the Squeeze Center, can this plug work indepently to get the U Server
8.04 to sleep or hibernate after the server itself is idle for a while?

Thanks a lot for your help,

Sean

1. Interesting enough, I have been goolging this for a while. Looks like
there is no power management features built into Ubuntu sever since
people believe server should be up and running 7x24. So not sure
whether gnome GUI would work.

2. If I do install the SC on my U server and run the plugin although I
don't have any slim devices in my home. How will the server perform?
Let's say: if I watch a video from my laptop (the video file is located
on the server), will the server sleep since there is no slim devices in
the network? I am trying to get a sense of the rules you use to put
server into sleep.

Million thanks for your generous help,

Sean

1: Yes, it should work with Ubuntu server, though I've only tested it
 with the desktop edition.

2: No, the plugin does not work independently of SqueezeCenter. There
ought to be some power-saving features built into Ubuntu's gnome gui
that will take care of general-purpose power saving for your server.

SrvrPowerCtrl, on linux machines, is really designed to provide power
savings extensions to SqueezeCenter. In this context, it works best
with headless servers that boot into text mode...i.e. NOT running the
 gnome gui.
