[SlimDevices: Plugins] Dynamic metadata on BBC Radio 1 & 1Xtra but no other BBC stations

2015-02-28 Thread Nick_G

Hi all.

I have noticed that on the iPlayer app playing the new HLS streams that
Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra both have dynamic metadata with information
about the track playing, the show, and Newsbeat headlines. None of the
other stations do this. Is there any reason why these two are different,
and if it works for them, could it be made to work with the other BBC
nationals?

It was the same situation with the old Shoutcast AAC streams.

Thanks and regards,
Nick

It looks like when the BBC killed off their Radiovis project and they
then decided to do another experiment.

No. The bbc is weird that way,

Not really just the metadata was never in stream like normal stations.
The BBC have started and stopped many many metadata projects over the
years - they seem to love to spend money on experiments and then shut
them down.

Although the logo for other streams, for example 6music, are picked up
from RadioVis.
Just not track details.

Not sure if that was always the case.

Not sure where icons comes from now. Icons used to be stored in Amazon
AWS and the icon used to be specified as an URL in plugin iPlayer://.

When BBC broke the method for supply the program image for Listen Again
a few months ago - Triode decided not to do a hack but wait for BBC to
do a proper fix. Not sure if Listen Again used same mechanism as Live.

Thanks guys. The BBC does indeed work in mysterious ways. It's a pity we
can't have the metadata for all the stations. I mean, how hard can it be
for the BBC to add it?

Nick

Running BBCiPlayer in debug, it is definitely coming from RadioVis.
But there does seem to be a lack of other info and the local stations
aren't even returning an image.

The BBC doesn't want to you to use a player - they want you to use a BBC
supplied iPlayer browser or an app and then it doesn't matter that
metadata is not supplied in a standard way.

Looks very much that way - I'm sick to death of the R5 tag-line

So what's the point in supplying high-quality AAC streams to those
devices, which can't take advantage of the superior sound, and leave
most hi-fi streamers (which are designed for that very purpose) with
poor quality unreliable MP3 streams (Shoutcast Radio 3 AAC reprieve
excepted)? It doesn't make any sense.

I wonder if it's a cunning plan to try to force more people over to DAB.
Although I think this fiasco will damage public confidence in internet
and digital radio in general. FM looks even more attractive now.

Regards,
Nick

We can only hope that BBC implement as a proper service rather than keep
experimenting as part of the development labs.
I'm not sure of the status of RadioVis / RadioDNS (last message on BBC
R&D is about 2011) but the group had message up to Jul 2014.
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/radiovis-developers

The BBC may be waiting for a RadioDNS standard which will work with all
"vendors" but it looks like the AudioFactory changes may have sidelined
all that by making it difficult for players vendors to actually play BBC
streams.

Meanwhile BBC R&D are playing around with RadioTag.

Working again now, and although a bit 'hacky' it can be changed to work
with other UK stations. (ClassicFM, XFM etc.)
