 I'd really recommend building/delivering a fixed-point version for ARM,
 I'd even be willing to put my copy on a server somewhere but know that
 many people would be wary of an untrusted source.

7.4.1 != 7.4-trunk

Let's see what we find in the tarball of the next stable release

I wouldn't be convinced there will be a 7.4.2 as development has moved
to 7.5 and it depends on the number of bugs found in 7.4.x. It does
seem well known that fixed point faad uses lower cpu on these devices so
I would recommend including a fixed point version in the builds. It
seems to be dependant on the specific device whether it is necessary
though to make aac decoding work at a given bit rate.

Both streams work fine in (the development version of) SSOTS using the
Bin/arm-linux/faad shipped with SBS 7.4.1. faad calls itself a floating
point version.

I see higher CPU load (50% or so) with 48k-aac+-stream compared to the
128k-aac-stream (25% or so).

This is on a TS-219 (it says 1200 BohoMIPS in /proc/cpuinfo).

2009-11-21 Thread Parky

Some stats in case it helps. I'm running on a 500MHz armv5tejl so here's
some figures from the cpu% using 'top' swapping versions of faad

Code:

  Soma FM 48k AACplus
  http://www.somafm.com/illstreet48.pls

  Floating   Fixed
  slimserver   25%+   10-15%
  faad 70-75% 21-25%,
  flac 1% 4-5%

  Radio Paradise AAC 128k
  http://www.radioparadise.com/musiclinks/rp_128aac-2.m3u

  Floating   Fixed
  slimserver   50-55% 30-35%
  faad 45-55%  8-11%,
  flac  2-3%   4-8%

Basically I get rebuffering every 8 seconds on the SOMA and just about
get away without rebuffering on Radio Paradise

I didn't bother switching off flac encoding (suggested by some) as you
can see it isn't the major lag. When streaming a simple mp3 file the
slimserver uses around 12% cpu

My concern is because QNAP seems to have a strange mixed endian

Well, at least it doesn't segfault or so when I type ./faad -h...

But I don't know if it works. I don't even know for what formats it is
used. I only have .mp3 (and some .flac) files :)

I binary-patch the faad (and the other binaries that come with SBS) to
use the SSODS libraries instead of the ones in /lib and /usr/lib. It
seems to work as far as I can tell.

And I tried to compile everything with VFP support. But I didn't manage
to find out if it is used or not.

The mixed endian issue will only come up when handling packing/unpacking
64bit words so seg faulting wouldn't happen but the decoded audio stream
would be garbled occassionally.

I don't think the issue will occur with a fixed point version as 64bit
is mainly used with floating pt operations but it is worthwhile
testing.

faad is only used to decode AAC and AAC+ formats so a test would be to
play http://www.somafm.com/illstreet48.pls on an SB3 or Boom.

If you are in the current directory then you can try (don't forget

be specified as either Data Sharing or Q-RAID 1. If I set this to Q-RAID

I don't have a 2-disk QNAP, but assume that yours is configured with
the 1st and 2nd disks configured under RAID such that if one fails you
simply remove and replace it, and you carry on unaffected. If you
switch-off RAID, you should still have 100% integrity of one disk with
all your data, etc, but you will have to specify what you want the
second disk to do, meaning scheduled backups . If you subsequently
decide to switch back to RAID, the second disk becomes invisible and
QNAP automatically handles the process. So, give it a go!

It's possible SSOTS has set up AAC decoding to use something else.

Confirm by looking at WebUI/Settings/Advanced/Filetypes/AAC

Settings there are as follows:
AAC AAC  Native
AAC FLAC faad/flac
AAC MP3  faad/lame
AAC PCM  faad

Is there any logging I can do to confirm what's happening?

By the way, if I use the Logitech BBC app (under MyApps) then I can
listen to live BBC streams without problems (but obviously it does not
support Listen again). Do these use a different format?

It's definitely using faad - you just have to find it.

Enable logging with os.paths set to DEBUG and also set player.source to
DEBUG and then try to play an AAC file or stream.

Check the log for faad - there should be one line where a full command
line with path to faad is shown.

Do you know if it's then possible to change back to a RAID 1 setup if

I don't know about QNAP but for a linux system the normal approach
would be first get a shell prompt and this is usually achived by using
SSH from another PC or less secure would be telnet.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPlayer Won't Play BBC Listen Again on QNAP

2009-11-16 Thread MunichMelly

It's good to see lots of people are now successfully running iplayer on
their QNAPs thanks to the contributions in this thread.
Having done a clean install of SSOTS and Squeezebox Server, and
applying the iplayer filechange provided in this thread, I am also able
to start both live and listen-again streams on my QNAP.

Unfortunately I am having problems with very frequent rebuffering
(several times a minute, i.e. not useable) with pretty much every
program (both live and listen-again). I am not in the UK.
The QNAP is connected to the squeezebox duet receiver via cable so I
don't think its a local network problem.

As a comparison, if I run Squeezebox Server on my laptop (via a 802.11n
wireless router) instead of on the QNAP then there are no problems - so
the problem seems to be specific to the QNAP setup.

Have other QNAP users had similar problems (and how did you solve
them)?
If other non-UK QNAP users are using iplayer without rebuffering
problems, did you change anything from the standard setup to achieve
this?
Are there any settings which I can change to help this?
Hope someone can help

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPlayer Won't Play BBC Listen Again on QNAP

2009-11-16 Thread bpa

It's possible the UK users of QNAP have disabled AAC and so QNAP does no
transcoding (i.e. no processor load) whereas your QNAP must transcode
the AAC stream and this would have a significant processor load.

Have you disabled AAC-MP3 and AAC-Flac. This will ease processor
load but increase network load.

This transcoding problem may go away next year (or possibly sooner)
when BBC start providing Listen Again in WMA (replacing RealAudio) as
well as AAC for non UK listeners.

QNAP supply a web admin tool, which has a system information screen.
When playing an iplayer stream cpu load is indicated to be around 100%
confirming your thoughts, compared with playing a local mp3 file showing
a load between 5% and 25%.

Is there any way to avoid the transcoding, or do I have to wait for the
BBC to start supporting other stream formats?

It's Alive! Replaced existing RTMP.pm with new one, above. Re-started
QNAP. Sorted.

Thankyou Triode and BPA, your work is much appreciated in this house.

For the semi-techie, solution can be implemented from a Windows PC
without the use of command lines or any Linux experience:
1 Download RTMP.pm to your desktop
2 Browse to the admin page for your QNAP and Create a Network Share
which points to the folder named \SqueezeCenter (just select from list)
3 Use windows to find the existing RTMP.pm ... it's in
\Cache\InstalledPlugins\Plugins\BBCiPlayer on the newly shared drive
4 Re-name existing RTMP.pm to .bak or something (belt and braces)
5 Move new RTMP.pm downloaded in step 1 to folder (drag and drop)
6 Using QNAP admin page, remove the Network Share from 2 (just to tidy
up)
7 Re-start your QNAP

QNAP: TS-109 II
SSOTS: 3.15
SqueezeCenter: 7.3.1 - 24372
iPlayer: 0.9f

Thanks for the suggestion to use MP3, but my impression is that the
pause/start response time is similar to AAC. I recall elsewhere that you
said that a programme may need to run for 10s before time-shifting works
properly, and I think this is what I'm experiencing on the QNAP.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPlayer Won't Play BBC Listen Again on QNAP

2009-11-10 Thread bpa

The log looks fine - no crazy floating point numbers anywhere.

 QNAP have advised on their forum that they will now get SSOTS modified,
 so again many thanks to you and Triode for your most helpful and expert
 engagement. Pending QNAP's fix, is there any downside in using the new
 RTMP.pm file?
There is no downside - it's just a mod to handle a quirk of the QNAPO
Linux port. Any idea what QNAP mean that they will get SSOTS modified -
is BBCiPlayer included in SSOTS ?

For UK listeners - there is a choice for Listen Again (both Flash as
transport) - AAC or MP3.

AAC needs to be transcoded for SB3, Boom, Transporters and in standard
SBS this is done by faad. For pre 7.3.2 - transcoding could also be
done by mplayer and this will have a delay at startup. You can check by
loking at what is the WebUI Settings/Filetypes/AAC setting.

If you are in the UK and you disable AAC in the BBCiPlayer settings -
BBCiPlayer should send an MP3 stream direct to player - no transcoding
(i.e.no load on QNAP) and no delay.

Any previous remark I made about 10 secs delay were probably in the
context of mplayer for AlienBBC and playing RealAudio.

Thanks for the clarification on AAC and MP3. My QNAP seems to be

clarifying that the time-shifting lag, if an issue, related to the

most iPlayer listeners using QNAP, and I for one would be most grateful
if you could take us under your wing and include a fix into the main
iPlayer plugin.

Please try the attached - it should automatically detect the problem
architecture and use the new code, but otherwise work as before.
Assuming this works for you on the qnaps and people also try it on a pc
then I'll include it in the next version of the plugin.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPlayer Won't Play BBC Listen Again on QNAP

2009-11-09 Thread bpa

Perfect.

For other readers of the thread - QNAP is behaving as a mixed endian
system unlike other little endian ARM systems such as Radio/Touch and a
big-endian Freecom FSG3 NAS which I have.
The output of a code pasted below is as follows on different ARM
systems

Touch: ENDIAN:LITTLE Test of unpack: 0ff3 Swap
flag:0
QNAP: ENDIAN:LITTLE Test of unpack: 0ff3 Swap
flag:1
FSG3:  ENDIAN:BIG Test of unpack: f30f  Swap
flag:0

The problem is a word swap which is peculiar to ARM architecture and
some ports of Linux and/or the compiler..

I believe this has confirmed the problem - now the fix needs to be
written..

Code:

  use constant ENDIAN = unpack('S', pack('C2', 0, 1)) == 1 ? 'BIG' : 'LITTLE';

  my $swapDoubles;

  my $double = pack (d,1);

  my $hex =  unpack(h*,$double);

  if ( $hex eq 0ff3){

  $swapDoubles=1;

  }

  else {

  $swapDoubles=0;

  }

  print ENDIAN: . ENDIAN.   Test of unpack: $hex  Swap flag:$swapDoubles\n;

I copied the code from this CPAN module
http://cpansearch.perl.org/src/EXIFTOOL/Image-ExifTool-7.89/lib/Image/ExifTool.pm
- look for swapWord anbd SwapWords in the file.

So Bryan - my understanding of this is that we treat as little endian,
but swap the first and second 32 bits in the binary representation of
the double?

In which case - could someone try the attached. (Note this assumes the

Correct about swappign 1st and 2nd word when 32 bit number however I
think your version of RTMP.pm won't work for 2 reasons.

(i) encode_number is called with various size numbers such as 1,4 and 8
bytes so the swapDouble should only be done when length is 8.

(ii) when decoding swapDoubles should be done after swapbytes so
decode_number should be
return unpack('d', swapDoubles(swap( $_[0]) ) );

I'm not 100% sure but just looking at the exiftool.pm code as a
template.

Isn't it called with any perl number but always returns an 8 byte
string as its always returning the result of pack 'd'?

 (ii) when decoding swapDoubles should be done after swapbytes so
 decode_number should be
 return unpack('d', swapDoubles(swap( $_[0]) ) );

Not sure I understand how it becomes reversable if this is the case -
should we not be able to encode and decode a number and get back to the
original..?

Anyway I'm possibly not thinking straight so happy to be proved wrong.

Perhaps someone can try it and let me how wrong it is!

If a QNAP user could test Triode's it would provide real results.

I was slow in posting my version of RTMP.pm because I have been trying
to convince myself what code is needed to do the byte and word
swapping.

1. My worry about the order of SwapDouble and swap - you're right it
makes no difference.

2. The encode_number - I'm not sure - I found it odd that it is used
with different size numbers.

Something has happened to your setup - the faad application can't be
found so AAC is not supported.

Code:

  [09-11-09 00:28:35.3206] Slim::Player::TranscodingHelper::checkBin (260)
couldn't find binary for: faad

However I thought the code I added would have been run. I think
perhaps the program you chose has not been added to Listen Again.

If you disable BBCiPlayer AAC setting and try a different program - it
may still give the info I need. The log message should give info
whether the endian is a possible cause of the problem or definitely
not the cause.

causing a problem. Please try and report back. (It assumes the

However it needs the encoding to be working correctly.)

Is there a way of raising a bug against SSODS so the author can look at

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPlayer Won't Play BBC Listen Again on QNAP

2009-11-07 Thread bpa

There is an issue with ARM processor where they are mixed/cross endian
for double - so I suspect there is something related since floating
point nos are appearing. I'll try to find something more definitive.

 WARNING: On ARM processors, double variables have a different format
 from IEEE double on most other processors. The bit pattern used by the
 ARM hardware and software floating point implementations follows the
 IEEE standard; however, the byte order is different from standard
 practice leading to a cross-endian implementation. Be careful when
 sharing double values in memory between ARM and other processors.

 On ARM, while each word of a double is stored little-endian, the
 most significant word (the word containing the sign bit) is at the lower
 address. This is neither pure big-endian (as implemented in 68k
 processors) nor pure little-endian (as implemented in x86 processors).
 Cygnus added a new binary floating point format, littlebyte_bigword, to
 GNU libiberty and changed GDB to use this format for ARM; this
 implementation is adopted for WRS ARM BSPs and for CrossWind.

 This format is chosen to be consistent with the ARM hardware
 floating point implementation, the ARM7500FE FPA Coprocessor Macrocell.
 However, since most IEEE floating point implementations are pure big- or
 little-endian, shared memory exchange of double variables is complicated
 by the unique cross-endianness of ARM double variables.

I've comes across this patch to handle unpack d on an ARM platform.
It was part of a Tiff library for Perl. Instead of getting a value 1
returned the value 5.29980882362664e-315 was returned. The patch is old
from 2005 which makes me think some compiler update may have removed
it.

It is worth nothing that 0x0ff3 is 5.29980882362664e-315 on
some endian configurations.

Code:

  my $double = pack (d,1);
  my $hex =  unpack(h*,$double);
  if ( $hex eq 0ff3 ){
  $swapDoubles=1;
  }
  else {
  $swapDoubles=0;

You need to check the URLs of the stream carefully and the format that
is displayed on the WebUI - so that there is an accurate description
which protocols and format have the problem.

rtmp - Flash/AAC or Flash/MP3
http - can be MP3 or WMA
mms  - WMA

Can you now clarify
1. Are the Live broadcasts using http or mms ? and is the format WMA
or something else ?

2. What format is World service WMA or other ?

3. WHat were you using to play Listen Again on SSOTS 3.8 - AlienBBC
or BBCiPlayer and if BBCiPlayer what version ?

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPlayer Won't Play BBC Listen Again on QNAP

2009-11-03 Thread majones

The BBC streams that don't work are rtmp-Flash/AAC (= most Listen Again
streams).
The BBC streams that do work are http-WMA (= live streams and World
Service Listen Again).
I can't recall coming across any other combinations, but half-remember
trying rtmp-Flash/MP3 and it not working.
Previously, all the BBC Listen Again streams worked fine with SSOTS
3.8, SBS 7.3.3 and BBCiPlayer (not sure exactly which version; 0.6?).

I think v0.6 of BBCiPlayer did not use Flash/AAC for Listen Again so it
looks like the problem is Flash/AAC and possibly something about the
QNAP environment.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPlayer Won't Play BBC Listen Again on QNAP

2009-11-03 Thread majones

Many thanks for your thorough efforts to help pin-down the problem, bpa.
It does seem to be a QNAP/SSOTS compatibility problem with Flash/AAC, so
I'll switch to the QNAP forum to try and get some traction there.
Meanwhile, I'm using one of my PC's to run SBS 7.4.1 and BBCiPlayer 0.9
and all is well, but I had intended to use my QNAP as a hub for internet
radio so am somewhat disappointed.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPlayer Won't Play BBC Listen Again on QNAP

2009-11-03 Thread Boydieuk

I'm also experiencing exactly the same problem as described by majones
with my QNAP TS-119. So I'm also following with great interest, and
thanks for your focus on the problem.

All worked great with BBC iplayer live and listen again at SSOTS 1.8
and Squeezecenter 7.3.3. Now with any version of Squeezebox Server 7.4
on SSOTS 4.1-7.4.0 the listen again streams (except World Service) seem
to play without sound.

I haven't the technical know how to play around with things so I've
left as is for fear of breaking it further (however I have followed the
same instructions on changing file types in BBC iPlayer and File
Types settings). But if I can help by sanity checking my SBS, TS-119 or
SSOTS config against majones please let me know and I'll try my best.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPlayer Won't Play BBC Listen Again on QNAP

2009-11-03 Thread bpa

majones,

Can you repeat your last log except this time enable AAC in BBCiPlayer
settings. The log you attached showed trying to play a Flash/MP3 stream
which I cannot use for comparison.

However after looking at the log there is one message which stands out.
Scroll text to see end of message.

Code:

  09-11-03 12:38:13.5059] Plugins::BBCiPlayer::RTMP::sendRTMPPacket (261)
sending rtmp: chunkChan: 8 type: 20 streamId: 5.29980882362664e-315

The streamid value is unusual - I expected a low integer so I suspect
encode/decode error which may a portability issues as Flash code
requires a lot of low level bit byte pack and unpacking in data
structures. THis is the sort of code that can break across different
system architectures.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] iPlayer Won't Play BBC Listen Again on QNAP

2009-11-02 Thread majones

I have a QNAP TS-119 running Squeezebox Server 7.4.0 with SSOTS 4.1.
iPlayer plays BBC live streams fine but not BBC Listen Again streams.
The server log errors are as follows:

0019: [09-10-31 00:29:43.4063] Slim::Utils::Misc::msg (1165)
Warning:[00:29:43.4000] 'apps/bbc/index.html' is not the same as
'(?-xism:apps/bbc/index.html)' at
/share/HDA_DATA/.qpkg/SSOTS/var/home/SqueezeboxServer/Slim/Web/Pages.pm
line 131
0018: [09-10-31 00:29:43.3845] Slim::Utils::Misc::msg (1165) Warning:

'(?-xism:apps/radiofeeds/index.html)' at
/share/HDA_DATA/.qpkg/SSOTS/var/home/SqueezeboxServer/Slim/Web/Pages.pm
line 131

Any suggestions as to where the problem lies?

As a test of QNAP capability - can you play this stream

http://www.somafm.com/illstreet48.pls

If it doesn't play then workarounds may be needed.
Are you in the UK ? It affects what workaround are feasible.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPlayer Won't Play BBC Listen Again on QNAP

 the fast TS-119 processor.

Speed is relative - 500MHz and no FPU is not fast when decoding and
re-encoding.  Do you have AAC-MP3 and AAC-Flac disabled ?

Since you are in the UK - the AAC streams you get are 128k. Are there
any error message in the log. There is a peculiar problem since Sunday
with AAC streams in the UK - it looks like a BBC server issue. A
workaround is to disable BBCiPlayer AAC - then you willplay the MP3
streams with no trasncoding.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPlayer Won't Play BBC Listen Again on QNAP

2009-11-02 Thread majones

Thanks for the help, bpa. I see that you are one of the gurus of
iPlayer/AlienBBC, so I am honoured to have your attention!

I have disabled AACMP3 and AACFlac = no change.
I have disabled iPlayer AAC = no change.

The Squeezebox Server web page indicates that BBC Listen Again
programmes are actually playing (ie played time and remaining time are
shown), although there is no sound. I wonder whether the line 131 error
is the key, but have no idea waht it relates to. I get no other error
messages.

Thanks again.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPlayer Won't Play BBC Listen Again on QNAP

2009-11-02 Thread bpa

I think the line 131 error is not significant as it emanates from the
Radiofeeds App and the BBC App - neither of which are related to the
BBCiPlayer plugin. The Apps are supplied as part of SBS by Logitech. The
BBCiPlayer plugin is a 3rd party plugin and not an App.

The BBCiPlayer problem is affecting many QNAP users who are using SSOTS
so it is not clear where the problem is originating.

Disabling AAC in BBCiPlayer settings should result in MP3 being sent
directly to play and so avoid transcoding - yet nothing happens which is
strange.

Canb you do a log with the following enabled
plugin.bbciplayer.parser  DEBUG
plugin.bbciplayer.rtmpDEBUG
player.source INFO
