Menu handling of AlienBBC was re-written which might make it a bit better as a result of better caching. No change in the actual streaming - the same mplayer does all the work and whether it plays smoothly or stutters is still between mplayer, your ISP and the BBC servers. OK - I thought so but I wanted to be sure. mplayer.sh is either in the wrong directory or is not executable by slimserver. To see where SC is looking 1. Go to Server Settings/Advanced/Debugging - set debugging flag os.paths to debug level - click "save settings" 2. Got to Server Settings/Advanced/FileTypes - enable the RTSP settings. - clock Save Settings. Look at the log there will be entries like the following except mplayer.sh and not lame. If it is any consolation - it fails for me too. It look like the BBC are only using mms and not http. I don't remember this being a problem before but I am testing with a clean SC 7.0 and no AlienBBC installed. I think I had set AlienBBC to handle the mms issue. Now that is resolved -- back to AlienBBC. The following is my understanding of your AlienBBC install. Make sure Slimserer is stopped. 1. mplayer has been installed and tested to work on BBC streams and is on the path. Please confirm. 2. The Alien directory should be in a directory 3.Put Alien folder too /usr/share/slimserver/Plugins Change ownership/group of Alien directory and files to "slimserver" protection. Change protection on files to "a+wrx" 4. Put mplayer.sh into /usr/share/slimserver/Bin and change ownership/group of Alien directory and files to "slimserver" protection. Change protection on files to "a+wrx" 5. copy custom-types.conf and custom-convert.conf file from Alien directory to /etc/slimserver 6. I've checked slimpicks and no joy. R4 runs for 4 seconds and stops before the music starts. I am having big problems with the BBC (on Alien) this afternoon, I suspect that the BBC system is down. I have tried 3 different PCs, players, SS 6.5.5 and SC7. No joy, I get timeouts. Try increasing the Radio Timeout - IIRC the BBC WMA streams used to take a long time to get started. Increase timeout under Server Settings/Advanced/Network/ radio station Timeout to something like 45 secs. I am in the Uk and windows file types is enabled as native. no change I'm afraid. With slimpicks the right hand side of the skin allows me press play, the timer runs for 4 secs and then stops, resetting to 0. No sound appears from the SB. Softsqueeze still doesn't work. A window appears showing the application starting, but just before sound it crashes. Youmay have two issues - so I think first fix Slimpicks as this will
ensure system is setup right for AlienBBC.
Slimpicks BBC will only work if you are in the UK and you are using an
SB2 or SB3. If that is the case, then make sure Windows Media
(built-in) is enabled ("native") under Server
Settings/Advanced/Filetypes.
If you are using SoftSqueeze - then you will need AlienBBC for WMA
support.
If you are using SoftSqueeze, there may stillbe sync problems as I
think SoftSqueeze needs to be updated to support the 7.0 sync
improvements.

Ok, I have now got Kubuntu 7.10 running correctly on my machine. I have downloaded the latest update to Alien BBC into the usr/share/slimserver folder and untarred it. Bin folder and plugin folder appears OK. I have SC7 which runs OK, shoutcast works, but Alien BBC doesn't. I got several updates on Kubuntu today and last night's SC7 build. No probs, Thanks for your efforts! Just fitted my second player. It's wired directly to a Quad 405 and into some little missions in the kitchen. Its fantastic having synchroed music throughout the house. If i can get Alien going that will be the icing on the cake. Not dim - you have come across bug 5718. If you disable a conversion -
SC will not let you enable it.

Please confirm you have RTSP entries in FileTypes and which conersions are active. Why is it not using Flac as that is installed by default ? Did you disable any conversion ? The file type wasn't allowed, but enabling it made no difference. the custom-types.conf file is in s;imserver/Plugins/Alien I'm sure lame is installed. OK - then it looks like it is SC setup. Try changing the station Timeout - it under Server Settings->Network->Radio Station Timeout. First, try playing the stations directly with mplayer from a shell prompt. This will isolate a SC issues from a network one. I wonder if it is the DNS problem that a few users are reporting. Sorry bpa, you've had fun with me in the past. Current setup is kubuntu 7.10 rc (don't ask!), I have recently had Alien working on 7.04. Squeezecentre is now 7.0 up to date. Alien is the latest build for SC7.0. The screen menu appears, but the connection dto the server doesn't take place. see screenshot.
