Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC - sound drop outs

2009-10-29 Thread agbagb

I recently went though a phase of maddening rebuffering in my synched
SB3s, using the Alien Real stream (Radios 3, 4, 7). Although I guessed
at bandwidth issues, I'm not sure it was

I could use the same router to push BBC streams direct to a couple of
laptops (ie, not using SC) and they would play fine, with no
interruption, while the SBs rebuffered away. I then trimmed out all
extraneous bandwith use, and even shut down everything on the server
except SC. Still rebuffering. I then shut down Controller - still
rebuffering; I un-synched the SBs - still rebuffering (though manybe
less so). I moved the SBs to within a few feet of the router -
still rebuffering.

I then moved over to the SC iPlayer plug-in, as well as Playlisting the
BBC direct WMA streams in SC. Shifted the SBs back to their usual
locations. Ran the server as normal. Hooked up and "load-tested" a
couple of laptops into the bargain. Synched the SBs. Powered up
Controller, as both Controller and Player.

No rebuffering *at all* on the SBs using iPlayer plugin, or the WMA
streams: not in many hours of continuous streaming, for several days
now. Switch back to the Alien Real stream - immediate rebuffering,
every few minutes.

As a further test to check if it is wireless - you could install lame
and enable bit rate limiting for the problem player.

If there are no dropout then it is definitely bandwidth related.
If there are dropouts then it is another issue possibly processing or
some other network issues (e.g. double hop if PC server is also on
wireless).

When you had no problem on wired player - what Radio 2 stream were you
playing ? Specifically what format MP3, AAC or WMA ?

Well, the fastest I can get giving 100% for the full 10 minutes was
2000kps. I get 98 - 99% all the way up to 5000kps.

I also tried Radio 2 on my wired Squeezebox+ and there were no drop
outs - I guess wireless connectivity is the problem after all.

Very frustrating though when FLAC and even Napster streaming seems to
work fine.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC - sound drop outs

2009-10-28 Thread bpa

Run Network test and check fastest speed you can get 100% for 10 mins.

Streaming Flac from files and from a network stream have slightly
different network characteristics so a Network test for a sustained
period is a better test than being able to play Flac audio files.

It's possible that BBC audio stream (e.g. ISP, network congestion) is
at fault but the plugin can do nothing about that. Some users have found
security s/w and ISP traffic shaping can affect playback.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC - sound drop outs

2009-10-28 Thread aspendl828

Hi bpa,

It's running on 3.0 GHz Pentium D machine with 3 Gig of RAM. It's wired
to my Linksys N router (can't remember the model) But, yes, I do get a
buffering message when I get the drop outs.

The PC is a dedicated 'server' but is also running Twonky and Netgear
DEW for an EVA8000. It's very unlikely that moer than one of these would
be actively streaming at any one time.

Given that I can wirelessly stream FLAC files to the Boom with no
problems at all I'd assumed my networks was 'good enough' for internet
radio - maybe iI was wrong?

Cheers

Andrew

2009-10-27 Thread bpa

BBCiPlayer should not have audio dropouts as it does not play RealAudio.
Gaps can occur due to buffering - are you getting "buffering messages"
?

Buffering can be due to processor or network overload or poor LAN. What
type of processor/system running SBS have you got ?

2009-10-27 Thread RichardHowells

I've not really stressed it yet. Based on the small usage it's had
since
I made the change it's clearly better.

I'll not really know until I get wires into an uncabled part of the
house. I've been promising myself I'll do that for several weekends
now...

Sorry I don't have more to say.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC - sound drop outs

2009-10-27 Thread aspendl828

Hi Richard,

Did you fix the problem with sound drop outs?

I already use iPlayer but suffer with a similar problem. The family are
beggining to rebel in that they are no longer prepared to put up with so
many annoying silences when using the Boom in the kitchen. There is
never a problem with streaming from the PC so I assume my network is OK
(wireless to the Boom. I'm not a big radio listener but on the odd
occasion I do try it I have to admit they have a point!

I'm running 7.4 and downloaded the latest iPlayer when I upgraded to
7.4. But the problem existed long before the 7.4 upgrade.

Any suggestions anyone?

Thanks

Andrew

Thanks for the reply.

I'm trying the IPlayer plugin now - didn't even know it existed. Too
soon to say if it has fixed my problem with drop outs.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC - sound drop outs

2009-10-17 Thread bpa

In RealAudio with live broadcasts if network get congested and then the
audio streams gets backed up (i.e what you hear can be seconds behind
realtime) - RealAudio then drops packets resulting in silences so that
the audio stream gets back in sync with real time.

The BBC have stated they are stopping RealAudio broadcast by 2010- I
think you should move over to the BBCiPlayer plugin which provides the
same facilities but using the new (and better quality) audio stream.
