As a long time Qnap NAS & ipeng user, are you aware of an itune app
called "QMobile" which has been available for sometime to Qnap users on
the app store. One of the features is that you can remotely stream from
your Qnap NAS all your music directly to your iphone/itouch/ipad etc.
Also you can download music directly to your i"device" & play it
remotely when away.
I pasted the apps description below from the itunes app store
Simon

QMobile is designed for users who own a QNAP Turbo NAS (Network
Attached Storage) and it further adds mobility to the contents stored
on NAS. It allows you to enjoy your entire media collections on the
move, and you can also share it with your families and friends.

Here are the major features of QMobile:
- Media Center: Browse and play the multimedia files saved in the NAS
- My Jukebox: View and play the songs in the NAS. Browse by playlist,
album, artist or title.
- Upload Photos: Upload your photos to the NAS and publish it instantly
on the web.
- My Favorites: You can save your favorite media files in your
iPhone/iPod Touch and play it offline. It also provides
auto-synchronization feature upon every connection

One of the tools I was referring to was called "senuti" and was working
fine at that time. :)

I've had some thought about doing an integration with Dropbox. I think
the Dropbox iPhone/iPod app supports to play music which you have
stored in your dropbox, so it would only need something on the SBS side
that made it easy to select which music to include.

2010-10-11 Thread bhaagensen

A number of streaming applications use caching in various incarnations
including persistent storage. Moreover, some let the user decide which
files to cache...

I'm guessing this is acceptable, if it can be argued that the main
feature of the application remains streaming (and not caching).

There used to be a couple of tools that allowed it, but as pippins
already mentioned it is frowned upon by Apple (and might no longer be
possible).

Strictly speaking it's forbidden to work around iTunes to upload music
onto the iPhone/iTouch. But there may be a way around it.
Can't comment on that any further right now.
