I updated the initgroups.php file to take the group name and not the 
name of the 1st layer. You can get it from svn/trac via

http://svn.pmapper.net/trac/browser/pmapper/trunk/pmapper/incphp/initgroups.php?format=txt

Nevertheless,  I would recommend to use the

"DESCRIPTION" "My Layer/Group Name in TOC"

entry under LAYER - METADATA in the map file. Layer and group names in 
p.mapper cannot have blanks, so if you need that you have to define the 
description tag anyway.
