While I'm happy that you'll work on smpeg2 I don't really see the point of waiting (unless you're working on smpeg2 right now). I have a consumer for sdl2-mixer today, one that doesn't need the mp3 support. sdl2-mixer will have, at most, one port that depends on it by the time your smpeg2 port comes around. Adding it in will be trivial; it's not like there will be 50 ports depending on it and careful testing will need to be done for each dependent port.
