Update is probably going to be a bitch. Go ahead, write a meta-pkg for gnome. I'm not sure it will fare so good with updates. Then again, with manual installs, it might be slightly better off than it used to be. But hey, when you run into library updates issues, it might take a while until I fix the darn bugs.
