It is a much cooler sounding name now that its decoded.
But in retrospect the meaning is pretty obvious 臘

How plebeian, you used m4 to configure sendmail. ️
In all my years administering sendmail I never got around to using m4 -
I just found the directives I needed and put them in proper places,
worked quite well for me and gave me a greater understanding of how
sendmail functioned. That said it was still better than when I was
forced to use Qmail, but not as good as when I transitioned to Postfix.

Is it an entity related to IBM's legal team?

Quite. Names also have a lot of power as we all know. For example, I
have wondered if the Java programming language would have become just as
popular if it was released as "Oak", which I seem to remember was what
the author originally wanted to call it.

20 to 30 years ago, I did a lot of work with DEC’s VMS operating system. The
original working name for the OS was Starlet. Many references to Starlet
remained at that time both inside files and as file names. I just checked on a
current version VMS system I can access - found 18 STARLET* filenames in the
system library directory.

A platypus?

Although Postfix could be said to identify its food-targets (incoming
SMTP) by "electrolocation", it is not a venomous creature.

If 'more' than a benign Postfix is required, then one must add filters
and policies.
(maybe some DDOS etc anti-measures would be closer to the idea of
venomous spurs on the back legs of Postfix?)

We tried a bunch of names for which I could register a domain name,
and each time the IBM naming authority would reject our choice.
Changing the name of a program is a lot of work; it is worse than
changing the name of the main character in a story.

Then we found out that a different IBM team had open-sourced their
PKIX code under an external name "Jonah". So we gave my code two
names: the approved internal name "IBM secure Mailer", and the
external name "Postfix". "post" was a different word for "mail",
and "fix" was for Sendmail, the inspiration for my efforts.
