True enough, but in the 190, 5300, 3400 & Kanga, there is. The drive can
just fall out and if there's any kind of electrical contact with the
logic board, you can fry your HD, your mobo, or both. That's why MCE sell
a mounting kit.

I am not sure about the 3400, since I have never been inside one, but
the difference in mounting screws for newer drives for the 1400 is a
non-issue. With the cradle and the zillion little pins, the drive is
not exactly going to fall out on you. So there is no need to drill,
glue, use bubble gum, velcro, or other adhesives.

Re: Connecting Duo 230 to Powermac 7100

2001-09-19 Thread Joseph C. Sis, JR.

I just went through this last nite with my PB520c (OS 8.1) and my PowerMac
6500 (OS 8.6) and there are a couple of things you need to get right.

First, AppleTalk on both machines must be set to "Modem/Printer", neither
can be set to "Remote Only".

Along with turning on File Sharing for the shared computer or both. On Mac
OS 8.5 and higher sharing preferences for each drive can be set at the
"cmd-Info" option. But in lower OSs you must highlight the drive and then
choose "Sharing" from the file menu.

Then in the control panel Users & Groups, you must create users with
passwords for logging into the respective machines.

Hope this helps.

Tonite I plan on doing the same with my PB100 (OS 7.1) and the PowerMac,
just because I can. I am such a nerd.

Lost and found Web resources

2001-09-19 Thread Dan Knight

When we lost the Clock Chipping page, Stefan Daehler posted to the
Vintage Macs list:

and when Gregg Eshelman mused:

>Now if only we could find a copy of that review
>on the Brainstorm accelerator...

Stefan Daehler noted:

I've updated all links to the Schrier site throughout Low End Mac (gotta
love BBEdit!) and added a link to the Brainstorm SE accelerator to the SE
page. I have a Plus with a Brainstorm upgrade -- love it! My local Apple
dealer has a Brainstorm SE in for service. I'm going to have to see if
the customer is going to fix or abandon it. ;-)

That said, we have a real problem on the Web: vanishing content. Some
shows up later on a new server, like Marc Schrier's clock chipping
information. Some is gone forever.

I'd like to offer the resources of Low End Mac and Cobweb Publishing in
keeping some of that good Mac-related stuff available. (Like the other
day, when I couldn't find the Power Mac 6200 Page, something I had linked
to years ago.)

If you have or know of a page or small collection of pages that is in
danger of disappearing, contact <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> about having
those pages archived on Low End Mac. Good resources should not be lost.
(Another great option: have Apple host your pages on mac.com!)

If you have or know of a Mac-related site that's in danger of
disappearing, have the webmaster contact <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
about low cost site hosting or the possibility of moving the domain to
Cobweb Publishing for the sake of posterity.

(do not reply to the list - thanks!)

Re: choices / CD-RW drives

2001-09-19 Thread Terry Holtrey

I have to tell you, the reason I got my iBook was that it was the
first portable laptop Apple has sold in a while. The Combo drive is
worth the extra bucks in the long run. I bought a Wallstreet CD
version and afterwords had to go on a trip with my 7 year old. I
bought a DVD module and decoder card and watched movies on the way.
Then I started needing data off of the laptop when I was out on the
job to dump into iMacs. If the iBook wouldn't have come out, I would
have ended up buying the CD-RW module.
Spend the extra bucks. You won't regret it. I burn music CDs for my
wife, watch movies and play Tomb Raider with my son on this thing all
of the time. You ought to see the BAA-BAAs (Windows Sheep) when the
glowing Apple lights up and I start a movie on this laptopm or open
iTunes and burn a CD on battery power.

Re: 8.6 upgrade for 2300c and lab macs

2001-09-19 Thread Terry Holtrey

First off, 8.6 is incredibly large and slow on a 2300. Despite what
the members of this list may tell you, 8.1 is much more appropriate
for the 100mhz 603 in your machine. The capabilities of 8.6 are lost
on the processor since it is actually slower than a 6100/60 and the
memory is limited.
8.5 is nessessary for the 8.6 upgrade and the programs needed are
Stuffit 6 and Apple Disk Copy to use the SMI image you get after
expansion. You need the installer for Stuffit since it includes the
Carbon Library extension.

Taping a drive or gluing it (or wedging it in, for that matter) is
usually OK, so long as you ensure the drive won't move. The other thing
to be careful about is to leave at least a 2mm gap between the bottom of
the drive and the logic board - otherwise, you can short the whole thing
(expensive and not at all funny).

Someone mentioned velcro, but I wouldn't advise synthetics like that
which might be conducive to static (very bad news). Not to mention the
possible melting problem someone else raised.

Re: Connecting Duo 230 to Powermac 7100

2001-09-19 Thread Remy Davison

>Can someone give me the procedure for connecting a Duo 230 to a
>Powermac 7100 so I can load programs from the desktop to the Duo?
Fortunately easy. Simply use a standard Apple printer cable (mini-DIN 8
both ends; from $0 used to $5-10 new) and plug one end into the Duo and
the other into 7100. Set up File Sharing on each. (depends on the system
version, but you'll find the 'Sharing Setup' control panel most likely on
yours). Have a read of the manual, but it's fairly intuitive - you give
the computer a name, a password (or simply allow Guest access
alternatively) and switch on AppleTalk in the Chooser. Click on
AppleShare in the Chooser. Voila. The other Mac appears in the Chooser;
you select it; it appears on the desktop. This is only LocalTalk
networking; it's slow but it works.

For an excellent tutorial on this (with pictures), check out

If you want to regularly sync the Duo with the 7100 or transfer large
files quickly, look into finding a Mini-Dock which will give you SCSI
Disk Mode capabilities (the Duo appears as a SCSI disk on the 7100's
desktop). But if this is only an occasional thing, stick with LocalTalk.

8.6 upgrade for 2300c and lab macs

2001-09-19 Thread tbrock

I downloaded the 8.6 system upgrade as all of you recommended. There
were 2 options:

1. sm bin or
2. multiple parts

As i was not sure which to check, I set the school's lab mac to download
over night. When I returned the next morning, both downloads were there
on the desktop, but not completed. There was a message that said "a disk
error occured". I check the harddrive and there was still plenty of room
left.

Anyway, I checked the downloads and found that 1 set had 12 parts and
the other downloads were 2 parts of sm bin. I tried to open them up to
see what they do and upgrade the lab mac. The message I then got was:
the application that created could not be found. I checked the
school's lab mac and discovered that it only had OS 8.1

1. Are these downloads intact?
2. Must your current system be running 8.5 for these to open?
3. Which do you install or is better- 12 parts or sm bin?

Stumped in Alaska,
Thomas & The Kinders
