TCP/IP Questions/help
Hi, I am on the internet via a cable modem through a Linksys (BEFSR41) ethernet cable/DSL router to Road Runner via ethernet connections. Works great except for two minior problems with my powerbook only. I am running a Lombard G3 with 8.6. 1) I have to unplug the ethernet everytime I boot up - other wise if I leave the ethernet plug in it hangs up while loading extensions and never finishing starting up it- just freezes in the middle of loading extensions. 2) Then once I'm booted up and ready to go, and now I want to connect to the internet, I have to go to throw away the TCP/IP preferences, then I reset them from appletalk (which reset cause I trashed the prefs) to ethernet and DHCP manually in the TCP/IP Control panel, then sign on to the internet. Does anyone know why these 2 things are happening and how to fix them. I have 2 other imac's (8.6 9.1) on the same network internet connection and I don't have to do this with them - they just fine. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. It just is so time consuming every time I start up. Thanks in advance, Linda [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... 540c Gurus in London
My son is studying at UCL (University College London) for his junior year abroad. I sent him over with a 540c that he can use for word processing. I know that he'll need an adapter plug, but is there anything else he'll need to get his conputer up and running? And are there any Mac Gurus I could point him who could help him out, especially someone in IFOR-Evans dorm? He isn't very technically proficient, and could use some help when he has glitches with his laptop. Thanks!!! Frank Modica Prairie School 2102 E. 5300 Apple Presentation System -- compatible?
Can anyone tell me if the PB 5300 can use the Apple Presentation System? The Knowledgebase had this ditty: Apple Presentation System (M2895LL/A) The Apple Presentation System makes it easy for you to create a presentation on your Macintosh, then display it to an audience on a larger television screen exactly as it appears on your Macintosh display. You can also connect your Macintosh to a VCR and record your presentation on videotape for easy and inexpensive distribution. The Apple Presentation System comes with software, cables, and video converter box. Unlike the Apple Video and Apple Video/TV systems, the Apple Presentation System can be used with any Macintosh that has a VGA or Apple 13/14-inch RGB output. This list includes, but is not limited to, any PowerBook with VGA or Apple 13/14-inch RGB output, Macintosh LC, Performa 400-600 models, Centris, Quadra, or other Macintosh systems with VGA video out. -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I know that he'll need an adapter plug, but is there anything else he'll need to get his conputer up and running? I have used my 520c for many years on trips to Europe (UK, France, Germany, Sweden, Finland). Besides the adapter plug, the only other thing to suggest is the modem settings: if your son uses the GV 19.2 kbps modem for e-mail, given the different dial tones, set the modem control panel to ignore dial tones. Voila! Add an adapter for the British telephone connections, and away he goes. Enjoy! Bob -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: 2300c Minus Word processing
We acquired a nice 2300c for our kindergarten room. I've worked with Macs for some years but am still learning the specifics of this notebook. It came with 8.6 and a ton of extra software. I can't believe it but I can find no word processing program??? snip Believe it or not, PowerBooks didn't come with a Works package. They still don't. Only consumer machines (iMac/iBook) get bundled software like that. The 190/5300/2300 certainly didn't. I'm sorry, Remy, but I have to disagree here. (Maybe Apple's sales/bundling policy was different in Germany?) My PowerBook 190cs definitely came with ClarisWorks 4.0, and my ex-wife's PowerBook G3/500 did come with AppleWorks 6. You could simply d/l the old Nisus Writer (4.2 I think) or the recently-removed WordPerfect 3.5 (but about a 35MB d/l). You're probably best off finding a $5 LCII someone's junking and getting ClarisWorks off that (I have so many copies, they're coming out of my ears, but the postage from where I am would kill you). Should also be plenty of inexpensive copies on ebay. Word 5.1 (you can also freely d/l Word 6 97/98 translators, which also work with Word 97/98/2000/2001) works well on the 2300. Invest in a copy of SpeedDoubler 8 (truly, believe me). AppleWorks 5.0x works very well on the 2300 and is bundled with MacLinkPlus translators which'll do most of what you want (convert to/from Excel and so on). AppleWorks 6.0 doesn't come with the translators AFAIK. And there should be also an abandonware WriteNow out there, a fine software package if you like it complete but light. And there's MarinerWrite, and so on, so you'd best go to your favorite Mac download site and look for freeware word processors to choose the one that fits your requirements best.. All he needs is an IEE line cord appropriate for his jurisdiction. The brick is approved for all countries, and is autoswitching from 100 to 240 volts. A line cord is usually cheaper than an adapter. -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... 5300 REA x3
Well, I called Apple today to ask if I could send my (sort of) new-to-me 5300 through the REA again. Of course, it's already got the date stamp on the battery bay, so that means it's been through twice already. When I asked to send it through anyway, the tech said it would be a billable service... Even though the last time it went through was in 1997. So I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who managed to get a PB 5300 through the REA more than 2 times. I'm also interested in hearing about strategies for fixing the problem with the book (the classic power-connector-comes-loose syndrome). I'm thinking cost effectiveness here. Thanks!
