How much is cheap these days?
Here in Japan, they run around $100 - $120 at discount stores.

Re: Strange Portable StyleWriter

2001-10-10 Thread Eric Schwarz

Well, upon looking at google and searching for info about it, I realized
that Apple had done something weird.

This StyleWriter (yes, it is an Apple, and not a Cannon with a few Apple
plastics - I know Cannon made these, though), has a parallel interface.
Apple included what was basically a PowerPrint-doodad for it. The AC
adapter is the same as the regular StyleWriter, as well as the ink
cartridge.

let another 190 Question

2001-10-10 Thread Joey Kelley

Hello All,
This time I have a different problem - I want to
put my 190 onto the net so that I can access my
School's fileserver. This would make many things
easier.
I have a PCMCIA 14.4 Megahertz modem that came in
a PC that I believe I can use. The 190 has OS 7.5.1,
and appears to have no internet capabilities
whatsoever.
 Thanks in advance!

The original Portable StyleWriter was indeed a repackaged Canon printer,
like all StyleWriter printers except the last two models (which were
HPs). I dunno why, but in the case of this one model, unlike all the
other Canon-mfgd StyleWriters, Apple decided not to install a standard
Mac serial port (and associated electronics) in the printer, but left it
with the parallel port its PC equivalent had, and sold it with a
parallel-to-serial cable and software they OEM'd from GDT Softworks, the
same package the latter sold under the name PowerPrint, for using PC
printers with Macs. (I have one of these packages if you're interested,
also the Portable StyleWriter driver software.)

It wasn't much of a printer, the portable equivalent of the rather slow
original desktop StyleWriter model. The Portable StyleWriter basic unit
must be hand-fed sheet by sheet, though a sheet feeder attachment was
available for it. It used the same AC adapter as the original
StyleWriter (I have several, platinum version) and the same Canon
BC-01/02 cartridges as the StyleWriter 1/II/1200/1500 models.

Strange Portable StyleWriter

2001-10-10 Thread Donna Hood Pointer

The Portable StyleWriter is actually a PC printer (Canon, if I remember
correctly). Apple packaged it in a case with their logo on it. It came with
the connector cable to make it work, which was really a PowerPrint cable, as
well as the one driver (from PowerPrint) to make it work. PowerPrint is a
cable and software package that allows you to print from a Mac to ANY PC
parallel printer. I have one and have successfully traveled with my PB to
India and printed anywhere I could find a PC printer available by using the
cable and the various drivers that come with it. If you don't have the cable
buy the PowerPrint package.

Well, stick me in vinegar and call me a pickle...I just looked the thing
up in the AppleSpec database.

The Portable Stylewriter was only ever made with a parallel port,
achieving the distinction of being the only printer ever made by Apple
that wouldn't work with _any_ computer Apple ever made, it apprently
shipped with a PowerPrint serial-to-parallel cable...like I said, made
during Weird Times at Apple...

That has to make it only a rebadged Canon portable Bubblejet...that
said, it'll work with a PC or a USB->Parallel converter, or the
aforementioned PowerPrint cable.

Dunno whether the Apple drivers will work, though...one of the TechNotes
discusses connecting a PowerBook G3 to it, ad suggests getting a new
cable and drivers from PowerPrint.

Sorry about the post with nothing added. I just got up and Crazy Finger
Disease struck.

Christopher,

I ordered a dongle from about 6 months ago. It ran
about $35 US with shipping within the US. SupplyNet is located in New York
state and will ship worldwide. Be sure and enter the URL correctly or you
will get a fire srinkler company.

GV was bought out a few years ago by Boca and again within about the last
year by Zoom. IIRC the contact information on the GV web site has not change
and they are not handling any orders for replacement parts.

What's the model number? Perhaps Apple's tech database would give you an
answer?

I don't remember that Apple made a parallel SW but that was during Weird Times
at Apple...they made all SORTS of off-the-wall stuff. They could have decided
to make a foray into the PC printer world...

Finally, are you sure it's a _Stylewriter_? Apple's Stylewriters were mostly
re-badged Canon Bubblejet printers with Mac serial interfaces...it could be
just the plastics from a SW slapped onto an ordinary Canon printer. (I've seen
weirder stuff!)

Clark's right and he's talking about 10/100 cards, not 10bT/10b2.
MacSense make both a 10bT and a 10/100 card, the latter being CardBus
only. On the 1400 or older, only 10bT is possible.
