Re: Source for 3400 pram battery

2002-09-17 Thread gponz

Hi, I searched all over the place (net and real life) and
found the best price was through an e-bay auction. I
contacted the seller and everything worked out perfect (I
got the battery, instructions and the torx for less than
$20). Very friendly and helpful.

You could contact him at:

Paul Erdelt [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]

or you may search e-bay to find him.

I hope this helps.

Anyone ever found an alternative source for 3400 PRAM
batteries? e.g., camera stores, electronics shops, phone
 stores, Radio Shack, etc?
Seems a pretty simple battery that looks a lot like
batteries used in other types of equipment.

I've seen the original 3400 batteries on ebay, etc., but
they have to be pretty old by now. If you could find the
same spec battery elsewhere though, you'd have an endless
 source of new ones.
 Anyone?

No way out of proprietary PRAM batteries except to get new
ones. But from what I read battery packs could be rebuilt
with suitable cells, tools, and know-how. Someone else
posted a source (I forget the url) for older stock unused
3400/5300 NiMH batteries for $29/5 that could be charged
 up to 2 hours+ usage.

I took the easy but expensive way out by ordering new ones
 from powerbooksplus.com.

Here's a question... If I upgraded my 5300cs to 1MB of VRAM (instead

Do the 1400cs displays work in thousands of colors or are they 8bit

PowerLogix PowerBoost? What the...?

2002-09-17 Thread Andrew Kershaw

Ok, so I was bored and did some surfing for info on 5300s. (Yeah, I'm
on a roll, I know!)

Mac Speed Zon
e http://www.macspeedzone.com/archive/Comparison/NonStandardPB5300.ht
ml has an article about a 5300 configured w/ a PowerLogix
PowerBoost CPU upgrade. They don't mention much (just some clock
speeds and integer and fpu performace specs). But I'm guessing it was
a 603e based card that went in the PDS. They say it was a prototype -
seems to have never gone into production. A quick Google search
didn't find any info about it.

Anyone ever seen or heard of these things? I always thought that 5300
processor upgrades were in the realm of nice idea, neever gonna
happen. Looks like it almost did, though.

Peace,
Drew

1400 charger - hidden menace?

2002-09-17 Thread Dennis Helsel

I was surfing sites related to the 1400 battery last night, and came
across a statement on one that even if it still works, an AC charger
goes bad over time and ruins batteries. They recommended buying a
new charger along with a new battery.

Is this just to get someone to buy more stuff? Anyone heard of old
chargers somehow causing new batteries to deteriorate quickly? I was
planning to buy a new battery, but my original Apple charger seems to
work fine.

IIRC, the 1400 passive screen does thousands. If the LCD for the
5300cs screen can do thousands, then adding VRAM should allow you to
use that mode. The video controller is probably the same on all 5300
models.

Re: 5300 stuff...

2002-09-17 Thread Andrew Kershaw

Mad Dog Victoria,

Yeah, that's what I thought. But I have this nagging in the back of
my mind - I think I read somewhere (couldn't find it just now though)
that the passive matrix display on the 5300 can only do some 4000
colors... I don't think it's a problem w/ the video controller...

What do you think would happen if I upgraded the VRAM and tried using
the display at thousands of colors if it doesn't really support that
number of colors?

Ok, anyone out there got a FrankenBook 5300cs w/ 1MB VRAM but the CS
display? Something put together from spare parts maybe?

Peace,
Drew

That worked. From the speed results, I bet this is just an
overclocker that overrides the bus speed controlled by the 33.

Re: 540 Display darkens

2002-09-17 Thread Tom Lisa P

I'm fairly certain it's not the backlight, as the screen will darken in a
short time even if the backlight is never turned on. That's not to say it
has nothing to do with the backlight circuits, but it seems more likely
to be something in the screen itself or its controller than the
backlight. On the PBs 2xx and 5xx I've been playing with lately the BL
looks to be a completely different circuit than the LCD itself.

Another observation on this effect: I have a 280 screen that does
this. I ran it for a while until it got dark corners. I then turned
it off (no battery or AC), and even after 1/2 hour or so, the corners
are still dark. I dont really know enough to make something of this,
but I have the feeling it means something.
