Good deals indeed; my fortune is usually that the active display I've
been looking for goes for $35 when I'm on vacation and away from
computers and sits at $135 when I'm here...

At least that's better than the $150 the last one went for on ebay; thanks.

Keep an eye on eBay and ask on the LEM Swap list. I picked up a pair of 24

No.

The 1400 does IRTalk only. The G4 does IrDA only. The two do not
communicate with each other via infrared. PowerBooks 2400 through
Wallstreet do both protocols, however.

Besides, infrared is slow, prone to interruption, finicky, and
generally a poor choice for transferring large amounts of data,
especially when you are rushed.

Trust me, ethernet is by far the superior transfer mechanism. You
could always revert back to a sneaker net of some sort

Peace,

Re: 1400 battery and infrared

2002-12-08 Thread aly
That's interesting -- the battery part. Did you buy a new one or a
reconditioned old one? I'm interested simply because my original one won't
work for longer than 16 minutes or so -- even with the "reconditioning"
program (run a number of times, under 7.6.1 and 8.1). I have hesitated
buying a new (read: expensive) replacement battery because I've heard even
they usually only last an hour or so. I'll be interested to see what other
people on the list have to say about batteries (well, and about the IR too,
as we've never been able to get our machines, both 1400cs, to communicate
that way!) Great phrasing, BTW, "must be some other voodoo" I only wish
that were the case! It would save money! =-)

Dear Jen:
The button on my 5300 broke completely last week; with help from Drew I
fixed it by replacing the palm rest, which might be the ultimate solution
for you too. But as a stopgap, if the worst problem it's causing you now is
getting Word started up, why don't you put an alias to the program in your
startup items folder? Command-tab will then take you from one open
application to another.

Best,

I don't think the CR- type batteries are rechargable, unlike VL- type
which _are_ and must be to be used safely in a PB. What happens when you
recharge CR- type cells? Heck if I know and heck if I would want to find
out either. Digikey has the correct VL- type cells you need, BTW.

2002-12-08 Thread Andrew Kershaw
>When I start up, about 80% of the time I have a pointer problem. I

Try installing Trackpad Climate Control. This is an extension for
all first generation tappable trackpads (190, 1400, 2300 - or a 5300
if you've done an upgrade) that is supposed to eliminate jumping and
undesirable movements from your pointer when using the trackpad.

You can get it here:

This screwy behaviour occurs because of the mechanism the trackpads
use to track finger movements. Without going into too much detail,
humidity causes the trackpad to think you might be touching it
someplace you aren't. This occurs when your trackpad is subjected to
very high levels of localized relative humidity - as when your palms
are just the _slightest_ bit damp (after you've washed your hands, or
if it's a little warm over the keyboard), when you actually get beads
of water on the trackpad, or plainly whenever the trackpad gets damp
or wet.

This software acts as a buffer between the trackpad's hardware and
the software controlling the pointer - it tends to decrease the
sensitivity of the trackpad while increasing the accuracy at the same
time. It works terrifically for me, being someone who doesn't have
to wear gloves in January. And, personally, I haven't _noticed_ any
actual decrease in responsiveness to my finger movements - for me,
the only noticeable affect is the elimination of jumping and
jerkiness.

The software was written for System 7.5 (released about that time
anyway) but it works fine all the way up to 8.6 at least, which is
what OS I'm running on my upgraded 5300.

Of course, if this doesn't work for you, you can work around it by
using an external mouse
>

Well, that would make sense, since they probably got moisture on the
trackpad. Most times I've seen it, though, it's not been a faulty
trackpad...

Peace,
Drew

It is hard to say how long they would last as a primary battery is not
intended to receive a charge. The powerbooks charge their PRAM
batteries with a trickle charge. Who know how long the non-rechargable
can take that.

The reason that powerbook PRAM batteries are rechargable is this: They
get a very heavy load put on them when you put the computer to Sleep
and swap out the main battery (AC not connected). This is a feature of
the Mac Powerbook, swapping the main battery in Sleep mode instead of
having to Shut Down, swap, then Restart. But this uses a lot of the
PRAM batteries power because it is not only keeping PRAM settings alive
but also RAM when it is Sleeping with no main battery or AC power.

Apple says to expect a good PRAM battery to keep RAM alive (in Sleep
mode) for about 4 minutes. In otherwords, your PRAM battery is depleted
in 4 minutes if it is powering RAM during Sleep. But, it gets recharged
(takes many hours) as soon as you get the new main battery slide in or
as soon as you apply the AC power adapter.

Formatting Norton-protected hard disk

Hi all,

I have got a 500 MB IDE hard disk drive, which came in a PB I bought
at ebay for replacement parts for my PB 5300c (it stopped to freeze
randomly, at last). This hard disk is very thoroughly password
protected by Norton disklock. I have not been able to access or even
format the drive, neither with a system floppy inserted nor in SCSI
mode. Are there other ways to circumvent this protection?
As always, any suggestions are highly appreciated!

powerbook 1400 RAM prices

2002-12-08 Thread Brian

I've been tempted occasionally by the video-out cards for the 1400; but I
have 2x24 RAM modules installed so I can't use the 16 bit Newer video
output card, only the Apple 8-bit. 8-bit doesn't excite me that much...

I've been looking at ebay for the 48 meg modules for a while but they go
for a lot of money.

I did notice that OWC (www.macsales.com) has 32 meg modules for $65, equal
or cheaper than most ebay auctions go for. And RamJet has the 48 meg
single module new for $129; cheaper than often seen on ebay.

Anyone seen a better price on the 48 meg single modules? DMS has a 48 meg
"kit" but I suspect that's 2x24.

Thanks,

Brian

190cs trackpad/button

2002-12-08 Thread Jen Harris
I've had a 190cs for about six months now. The person I bought it from
stated that he had fixed a power connector problem, which I gather is a
common problem with this model.

I've had a continuing problem with the trackpad/button, and in searching the
archives haven't come across a solution, so apologies if this has been
addressed before.

I think what's happening is the button gets stuck, but it may be the pad
itself. When I start up, about 80% of the time I have a pointer problem. I
can't move it where I want, it snaps back and is v. difficult to deal with.
Generally, since I mostly use it for Word, once I get the app running, I'm
ok, since I don't need the pointer for that. Moving the pointer to a
desired point is nearly impossible, but with time on my hands, I can manage
it. Sometimes, if I click the button a bunch, it works a bit better, as
though it's getting warmed up or something.

What I'd like to know is if folks think this is fixable, or something I
should just deal with? As I use this laptop solely for wp purposes, it's
not impossible. But if I can fix it, I would like to.

Again, apologies if this is a v. known problem. I looked at the archives,
and folks reported issues with the 5300 pad, but I'm not sure if my problem
is the same.
