ethernet pc card for 5300c/3400c

2003-02-11 Thread pook la roux
I need to know the brand names of some ethernet pc
cards that would work on both the 5300c and the 3400c.
Most of the cards I can get new off the shelf require
cardbus (and we know we don 't have that...) so I'm
sure I'm looking for something used. I did a search in
the archives about it, and I know there is some kind
of 3com card that is supposed to work with a modified
farallon driver, but unless there is no other choice,
I'd like to use something else.

Thanks

Pook

I've got a Global Village Powerport combination ethernet and modem card

pb 3400c behaving strange

2003-02-11 Thread gponz
Hi everybody!!

I have a pb 3400c that's behaving very strange... maybe
someone out there can help me. Here's what's happening:

If I plug the pb to the AC and start it up, it works ok,
except for the date, which is always wrong... I already
changed the PRAM battery twice, so that's not it. Someone
told me it could be the logic board... but the machine works
as normal once I change the date.

Other problem is that the main battery doesn't charge, so if
I pull the plug the pb dies, I have to keep it connected all
the time. This is strange, since the battery was working
fine one day, and suddenly it "died", it didn't last less or
anything.

I think the power adaptor has a loose cable or something,
because if I move it (the plug that connects to the pb), it
sometimes doesn't work. Could this be the problem with the
main battery? or with the PRAM

I hope I explained myself.

Thanks for the help

Gabriel

I have a Farralon EtherMac PC Card pcmcia 2.1 and pc card standard.
Connects at 10mbits and works great.

I've been thinking about getting the Belkin Notebook 10/100 Ethernet Card Type II
16-bit PCMCIA. I'm not 100% positive it will work, but most other belkin items I have
do.

I use a VST removable Zip drive.
A Bookendz Dock.
A removable 1GB backup drive
Apple removable CDRom drive.
Apple removable floppy drive
Boosted the RAM to 144MB
Runs a retail version of OS9.1 just fine.

Re: pb 3400c behaving strange

2003-02-11 Thread Sionnach Aisling
Your date being wrong is usually a sure sign that
something is wrong with the PRAM battery. (Yes, I read
that you've changed it twice.) A bad PRAM can also be
the cause of oddities experienced when working from
battery power.

Have you tested both PRAM batteries you put in the
machine to make sure they were OK? When you initially
changed the PRAM battery, had the original battery
corroded onto the Mother Board or the connector for
the PRAM?

I'd check the voltage on the PRAM battery and check
the cable that the PRAM connects to (if memory serves
it plugs into an extension cable...) Make sure the
connection is seated well. Make sure the cable is
kinked the way it is routed. If you have a multi
meter, check continuity on the extension cable from
the PRAM.

The plug being loose at the rear of your powerbook is
generally caused by a broken solder joint where the
plug attaches to the Power board...

I suppose all of your trouble could be power board
related, but I'd start there...

Cheers,
Sionnach

Did you try resetting the power manager?

The power socket itself could be the problem with the battery not
charging. If the socket has a problem, like being loose, the battery may
not getting the charging power it needs and the computer may not even get
power. You probably did diagnose it yourself.

Maybe if you made it clear EXACTLY what OS it is that you have...?
I've seen you write 7.5.? , but what does the "?" signify? Is it a zero
or a "3"?

So, I think I understand that you have DiskCopy images of "some" OS, and
that possibly you are trying to convert these to floppy disks on your PC?

Is that the case?

Re: Powerbook 1400 hard drive

2003-02-11 Thread David Allen
Any IDE 2.5" drive will fit as long as it is no more than 12.5 mm thick. (There
are lots of 14mm drives floating around, but they don't allow the keyboard to
fit back into the case.) The bracket may not align to mount some drives, but
the space is tight enough that it isn't needed. (I have a 9 Gig, 9mm thick
drive in one of my 1400s that won't allow the bracket's screws to be used, but
it stays in position with no bracket attached.) Remember that some of the older
systems wouldn't recognize a partition larger than 2 Gig. (I don't remember the
exact cut off OS version, but it seems to me it was back in the 7xx range.) A
larger drive can still be used, but it must be partitioned to multiple 2 Gig or
smaller partitions.

I use a Ositech Trumpcard, the Jack of Diamonds in fact. It is a combo

there would be much difference).

As for the Cardbus issue, your 5300 has no hope, but your 3400 might... Have

Unfortunately, the only USB cards available at the moment are PCI and

Ooh, the wonders of a Quadra 840AV with USB...

well I was there inside the PB 3400c AND the solder joint is just
placed on the mobo stabilized ONLY through the solder joint, if you
manage to solder it again it will still be very fragile, so I put in
one extra cable from over one of the joints (- sadly that was not
enough, better though) - but i did not find a good big enough space
to fit another cable in ! it is almost unbelievable that apple ever
could have made anything that fragile ! someone here suggested epoxy
glue after the soldering is done - but that could make the mobo
itself crack ? since the force from wiggling the poweroutletchord is
only apprehended by that solderjoint.
by the way - it seems like PB 2400 batteries and powersupplys fits OK
in the PB 3400 !

can we have a cloussoup pic of that mobo with solder joints, please

AND...

my meager experience gave that the battery is powered from the same
mobo connections as the battery, its not like an old taperecorder
where the battery is side by side of the trafo, the battery (IF i
remember correctly) connects from the opposite side of the mobo and
there are only two cables inside the powersupplychord itself - earth
and + (?) would seem silly (sillier ?) to split that alone + chord
at the mobos solder joint - if it is anyroads joined up in the
trafo ? maybe there are different kinds of power supplys (???)
because the jack itself suggests 3 cables connected up inside -
have you tried reconditioning your battery ??? and zappin it's
internal pram (smart battery) does it get very hot when battery
inside ? does the battery even try to fill up ? ours did not when the
battery was dead, with the new battery itstarted filling/charging at
once (the animated battery in the menu row).

and I am soo sorry for my terrible english sometimes --- ! when you

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the set of
DiskCopy images available on the Apple site is not designed to make

I tried one of those, but the 5300c didn't recognize
it, and I couldn't find any kind of mac driver for it.
I don't have the 3400c in hand yet, so I dont know if
it would work on that.

It's pretty easy to drill out the cage - only two of the holes needed
to be done on my 1400. It helps to slot them just in case your
measurement and/or marking are a little off (voice of experience).

(look ma, no footer).

I still think the footer should go on top so on small powerbook screens,
you'll know it's there and remember to trim it.

Anyway I have had no trouble with my 20gig drive moving around in my 1400;
I didn't drill new mounting holes, it's just a tight fit. I marked the
position it installed into with a pen, packed the thing around for a while,
looked at it, it hadn't moved.

It is a pretty snug fit. The 20 gig IBM fluid-bearing model anyway.

I think I remember something just like that aswell, that some of the
disks were 4 k to big to fit the floppy, not all but some.
I have the 7.55 with upgrades on an old MACWORLD CD.

Up to the fisrt G3 Powerbooks, the PCMCIA port is a 8 bits port. So any 16
bits PCMCIA adaptors don't work...

PC Cards (PCMCIA) are at least 16 bits, Card Bus, a superset of PC
Card is 32 bits. Early power books (up to the 3400) can only use 16
bit PC Cards and not Card Bus. G3 Series and above can take Card Bus
(32 bit) or earlier PC Cards (16 bit). 3400 and the Original G3 have
Card Bus electronics but a non-Card Bus card cage so they MAY work
with Card Bus and can with a modification.
