Thanks...

Turning Silver to Gold?

2003-03-08 Thread JeanBee
Hi ...
A while back I got an Orinoco Silver 802.11b PC Card working with my 3400
running OS 9.1. I'm using the Airport software with this. Someone suggested
that there's a way to upgrade this card to 128 bit encryption, but I haven't
found instructions for doing this. I seem to remember that if you install
the new Orinoco (or whatever branded name version of these same cards) that
it will automatically enable the upgrade ... is this the only way to do
this? If so, does anyone know where I can find the appropriate software? ...
or any other hints/clues/instructions/guidance?
Has anyone here done this? Any danger to the card in doing it?
Thanks,
Jean

So, hold down the c key and use the OS CD as the startup disk.

Yup. Oddly enough, if you start up with the OS CD in the reader, and
hold down the 'c' key at startup, and the CD is a bootable CD, it will
boot the computer.

Done it on two different 5300's.

I can see using the external CD-ROM to install software OTHER THAN the OS,

Re: HP DeskJet Portable

2003-03-08 Thread David Allen
The support side of http://hp.com has listings for the manuals and driver
software (version 5.1.1 is the latest and supports OS 8.x through OS 9.x) for
the DeskJet 310 and 320 PC parallel printers and the DeskWriter 310 and 320
Mac Serial printers as well as spec sheets. (The 310 and 320 are pretty much
the same except the 320 prints a little faster.) The words "DeskJet 310" (or
320) or "DeskWriter 310" (or 320) are usually found to the right of the
control buttons.

Check the side of the printer unit (the part with the control buttons) for the
printer cable port. If you have the round 8 pin port, it is a DeskWriter (Mac)
printer and usable with your 5300 via a Mac printer cable. If it has a port
that looks like a small SCSI connector, it is a DeskJet (PC) printer. Both
versions are color capable printers, but only the deskWriter will work on your
5300. There are parallel to USB converters available, but that would require
adding USB capabilites and the converter. The cost wouldn't be worth the
effort. I'd recommend selling the DeskJet to a PC user and looking for a
DeskWriter for your Mac. (LEM Swap or eBay)

The C3005A designation on the bottom of the unit is the part number for the
sheet feeder/printer base assembly. The printer unit is actually removeable
from the base for an even more compact and lighter printer. With the units
separated, there is a battery cover visible on the bottom of the printer unit.
This can use an optional rechargeable battery that allows up to 100 pages to
be printed without external power. (Great for print anywhere use with a PB)
Without the sheet feeder assembly, the paper must be single loaded though. The
AC power unit recharges the battery without it needing to be removed from the
printer.

I find no reference to any PCMCIA slot. Where is it located on your printer?

Once the software is installed, it works just like any other Chooser selected
printer in a Mac. It has the standard page setup and print commands with some
options available after "Print" is selected.

I never had problems with the hard drive in the PowerBook either. Only
the Quadra's hard drive reports errors for certain files, or certain

1400 startup problems

2003-03-08 Thread Bob Raiselis
I've got a 1400/117 I'm trying to resurrect...

When I plug in the PowerBook 1400, the green light on the upper-right of
the screen sort of blinks, once a minute, and the speaker chirps once a
second in synch with the light.

If I hold in the Power manager reset button on the back, the speaker
chirping gets louder, and the screen flashes once a second, all in synch.
The screen flash is dim enough that it's hard to see unless the screen is
shaded or the lights in the room are off.

Removed the RAM modules one at a time, no difference. Replaced the PRAM
battery, no difference. Doing a command-control-powerkey makes no
difference, nothing starts up.

Any ideas of what to try next? This is not a critical machine for me, so
I don't want to drop much money into it, but I'd like to get it going if
possible.

thanks.

Bob

Actually, the 2300C is a very oddball PowerBook, since it can take both SCSI
and IDE internal hard drives. This was done so that people upgrading an
older Duo to a 2300C by means of a logic board upgrade could keep their old
SCSI drives, while standard 2300C configurations employed IDE drives.

Actually, it's not all that weird. Using a regular SCSI cable, the PowerBook
would indeed see (and mount) all the Quadra's drives on the SCSI chain.
However, the fact that both motherboard SCSI controllers will be set to SCSI
ID 7, would cause some serious ID conflict issues. This might explain all
the I/O and data corruption errors.

The Duos all take SCSI hard drives (with the exception of the 2300).
These are very rare in anything more than 1 gig and expensive even at
that point.

Any 2.5" ATA drive should work. Note the thread about SCSI disk mode if
you put in one larger than 4GB, and installing newer drives requires
some minor drill surgery on the HDD cage to put mounting holes in the
right place.

Also, the existing drive may have a jumper in place next to where the
hdd cable plugs in; it looks like a master/slave setting. I replaced
the jumper in my new drive in the same position (the drive came from an
upgraded PB G3) and it didn't work, but removing the jumper did work.
You may need to experiment a bit.

The powerbook disk shows up on the desktop of the other computer as
though it were just an attached drive.

The Powerbook has a blank white screen with a big SCSI icon bouncing
around slowly, like a screen saver. There's a number in the icon,
signifying what ID it's been set to (using the SCSI disk mode control
panel) and two opposite-facing arrows that show progress hatching when
disk I/O is occurring.

I'm baffled by what's happening to you...it's not supposed to happen
that way. I wonder if the disk mode cable you're using is broken.

Subject: System software for a PB160

Hi,

I'm trying to find system software for a PB 160, or at very least a utility
disk that I can boot from. Is anyone able to point me in the right
direction? Any help would be appreciated.

Regards
Donovan Marshall

The PowerBook 160 supports OS 7.1, 7.5.1, 7.5.3, and 7.6.1. You should be able to
boot it with the DiskTools floppy disk from any of these versions, or a 7.5/7.6 CD if
you have an external SCSI CD-ROM drive. Take a look at the following for further
specifications.

HP DeskJet Portable

2003-03-08 Thread Pat Chapman

I've just acquired the above to work with my pb 5300 but despite much
trawling of the net I can't find the User Guide/Manual. It is C3005A model
and may be a 320.

I'm particularly interested in what the PCMCIA card type connection is all
about and also how to use the Menu settings. I seem to remember seeing
reference to this printer on this list.

If anyone can help I will be very grateful.

Pat

Re: 1400 with scsi zip drive

2003-03-08 Thread David Allen
Does your SCSI adapter have a switch ? If so, try it in the other position. One
position is to use external SCSI devices and the other is for connecting a PB to
a desktop Mac so that the PB is recognized as an additional hard drive. (A form
of networking available with some PBs.) On mine, it is called the SCSI Dock
switch and the "OFF" position is used with external SCSI devices. Be advised
that sometimes the adapter doesn't sit tightly into the PB and needs to be
shimmed up to make proper contact. Put something of proper height under the
adapter so that it fits straight into the slot. Using the HDI 30 wasn't one of
Apple's better ideas. I've also found adapters with bent or broken pins. It
should have 30 pins (6 rows of 5) You might also try a different external device
to make sure the adapter works. (The green light being on doesn't always mean
the adapter is working properly.) An external hard drive works well for testing
if you have one available.
