Re: HP DeskJet Portable
David Thank you for your reply. In the meantime, I eventually tracked down the HP DeskJet 300 Series Printer Family Technical Support Solutions Guide, and have been able to work things out, and, as you say, the DeskJets are for PC's and the DeskWriters are for Macs. As it happens, I already have a 310 DeskWriter so I can use the Sheet Feeder with that for my PB, all is not lost! The Guide says All these printers can print demonstrations using a PCMCIA card that fits into the printer's card slot. The DeskJet 310 and 320 should be able to print from the US Demo card designed for the card slot of the DeskJet Portable, but not from the Europe Demo card. DeskJet Portable localized font cards also work with the DeskJet 310 and 320. All DeskJet 300 Series printers except the DeskJet 340 have a single card slot for a PCMCIA type1.0 card. The slot is located directly underneath the HP logo and DeskJet Portable name at the left side - all the buttons are to the right. My 310 DeskWriter doesn't have such a slot so perhaps it is only the DeskJets that have them. Again, thanks for the swift response. Pat - Original Message - David Allen wrote Subject: Re: HP DeskJet Portable I find no reference to any PCMCIA slot. Where is it located on your printer? On 2003-03-09 14:57, Brian [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: What kind of HD is used in a 100? and what is the biggest? Short answer, SCSI only, biggest, well not very big. they are 2.5 SCSI, there's not enough room for an IDE to SCSI adapter in that 'book so you can't use an IDE laptopdrive with a SCSI adapter on it (as you can in some machines). Actually, there is. The HD in a PB100 can be up to 17mm thick, and since SCSI-IDE converters are 5mm thick and modern notebook drives are 9.5mm thick, such a combo should work just fine. Realistically the best you might find is an older IBM 540; the blurb below mentions 1 gb but I think that's referring to powerbook drives in general of the time of the FAQ; Ive not heard of anything that big in 2.5 SCSI, and am not sure it was ever made. They quit making tiny SCSI 2.5 a long time ago as far as I've ever heard. Largest SCSI notebook drive IBM ever made was 1.2 GB (TravelStar XP model DPRS-21215). Dunno 'bout other manufacturers. I think Toshiba made even larger ones. ,xtG .tsooJ -- Real programmers always mix up Halloween and Christmas, because Oct 31 == Dec 25 -- Joost van de Griek http://www.jvdg.net/ -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... The only ones I've seen (IDE to SCSI) would take more room than there is length available in the pb100 drive area. It's a very tight fit. But I've only seen one IDE-to-SCSI adapter. I trust the FAQ on this one still :) but it would be neat to find a working solution (I do still have and occasionally use my pb100, and getting a new 20gig IDE drive would be super just from a reliability/trusting your data to be safe aspect). There is a tool out there that lets you adjust the amount of processing power that FileSharing can draw on. By default it is set rather low, to prevent FileSharing from loading down the local workstation too much. I think the name is PowerShare. What kind of network are you using (LocalTalk, Ethernet)? Re: HP DeskJet Portable
That explains things. The Mac version allows test/demonstration printing without any addional parts. Hold the Ready button while pressing the Power button. When the Ready Light flashes, insert paper and a test page is printed. PC printers (for the most part) need their own built in fonts, extras of which would be available on a card. The Mac versions use the Mac's built in fonts and can print with any font available to the computer. The joys of Mac vs PC even carries over to peripherals. David Allen Pat Chapman wrote: The slot is located directly underneath the HP logo and DeskJet Portable name at the left side - all the buttons are to the right. My 310 DeskWriter doesn't have such a slot so perhaps it is only the DeskJets that have them. Again, thanks for the swift response. Pat -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Clearing up an old argument....finally spelled right
...my external CD-ROM's software operates as an extension...how on earth could I use it to install software? Would not the OS CD-ROM have to be used as the startup disc? So, hold down the c key and use the OS CD as the startup disk. Works if the CD has an Apple ROM. Otherwise maybe not. I assumed that procedure only worked for internal CD-Roms... help
Does anyone know of this: I have a PB 1400c and its hard drive crashed while SCSI disked to my G4. I have tried everything to get this thing to start up. It starts with a happy mac and then goes to a disk/question mark. I have tried to mount it in OS 9 (originally I mounted it in OS X jaguar) with no luck (I even used Mount Everything). I then was frustrated, took out the hard drive and hooked it to my PM G4 directly (with a 2.5 adapter) without any other disks hooked into the bus. I then tried to start with a NORTON U. disk (holding C key down) but it would NOT start up from the CD! HELP PLEASE! Jef -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
