Re: System for 1400

2003-03-11 Thread Thad Hoffman
Mine shipped with 7.6.1 on cd and installed, also had an OS 8.0 cd in the
box, though I never loaded any 8 version on here. Just 7.6.1 and 9.1.

I bought mine new Dec 1997.

I do know 7.5.5 will not work on it.

I have a PB 540 and an 840AV. I couldn't get the 840 to start with the
PB connected using a normal SCSI cable and the 30 pin SCSI PB adapter in
Dock mode (switch on). I had to

a.) leave the PB connected in "dock" mode, but off

b.) turn the 840AV on and let it finish booting up

c.) turn the PB on and mount it using Drive Setup.

Everything worked fine after that.

I have attached desktops SCSI to SCSI and been able to mount the hard
drives with various combinations of restarts and switching off then on.

Sincerely yours, Grizzlygiant

Re: PB 5300cs Questions?

2003-03-11 Thread Robert Eye
Jason,

Speed Doubler: you'll need Speed Doubler 8 (specifically, version 8.1.2) to run on
MacOS8.x.

I'm running SD 8 with MacOS 8.1 on my 5300cs, and it runs fine. There's a noticable
difference running with and without SD 8. I'd guess that a lot of the Finder code is
still 68k in 8.1, because Finder operations are faster using SD 8.

Check ebay or post a WTB on the Swap List to find a copy. There are 6 listing on ebay
right now for SD 8.

Did your PB 5300cs come with 16 MB on the motherboard (16 m-board + 32 module = 48
Total)? I thought all the 5300cs models only had 8 MB on the motherboard (which, when
adding a 32 MB card, would give you 40 MB, not 48 MB)?

Regards,

Bob Eye

[edited]

I just installed a 32M RAM module into my 5300cs (had a 16M module before) and wanted
to do some more stuff to it.

I currently have OS 7.6.1 on it. I have OS 8 (and the 8.1 updater), but was wondering
if it would be wise to update. The machine currently has 48M in it, with the stock
770M HD. Pretty much all I use it for is Office
98, and a few games.

Also, I have Speed Doubler 1.32 (?) on it now. If I upgraded to 8, would this program
still work, or would I have to find a newer version? It made a noticeable difference
with 7.6.1.

IIRC, the mechanism is the same one as used in the PowerBook 500-series. You
might find a whole 540C for less than that, then scavenge the drive and port
out the PowerBook on eBay. Free floppy drive! :-P

No. SCSI might be an option, if you get a floptical or SuperDisk drive, but
those are rather expensive options for essentially obsolete technology.

> Is there a cheap USB adapter for the PC card slot or something? HELP!

Nope. USB PC Cards (for the Mac) are all CardBus (32-bit) cards, and the
1400's PCMCIA slots don't support CardBus.

Really? Wow... My 1400C/166 came with 7.5.3, I thought at the end of the
line they came with 7.6.1..?

I have never tried it in this particular setup, but way back in the day when
I had MSX computers, I would hook up two computers to one (expensive!) SCSI
HD, setting both controllers to different IDs. It sorta worked, if you were
careful.

Not necessarily. There were many PowerBook SCSI adapters available that
would convert HDI-30 to DB-25, with or without a docking switch. Unsing such
a beast, you can connect two computers through a regular DB-25 SCSI cable.

with?)? Does anyone know where I could d-load that system? Is it 7.6
or 8.1 perhaps?
Thanks ,
