ide to scsi drive converters

2003-06-10 Thread Philip Stortz
next week i'll be testing an ide to scsi converter that should allow me to use a cheap
and large ide drive in my duo that normally needs a scsi drive. they're 2.5-3.5mm
thick (i'll have to check mine to be sure) and should allow the use of nearly any of
the ide laptop drives in a scsi powerbook as they can use 17-19" drives and the newer
ide drives are much thinner. i'm wondering, if it pans out, how many on the list
would be interested in such an adapter for say $25? i can get them cheaper in
quantity and make a few $$ (i'm basically disabled but still fighting to get on
disability) so i'd love to help fellow listers and make a small profit if this works
out. obviously i wouldn't take any orders until i had tested it for a few days to make
sure it handles sleep and everything and doesn't cause any other problems. if it
works, i'll also be seeing if i can get one designed for 3.5" drives or how hard
they'd be to adapt (shouldn't be too hard, i am a hardware hacker). if interested,
let me know off list and i'll tell you how it turns out and when i might be able to
get more, my supplier is importing them in bulk so i'll have to ask him about his
supply if things turn out but i've heard good things. thanks. also, i'd like to
apologize to any one other than craig on the swap list that was offended by my earlier
postings.

Hi Kevin,

These powerbooks will actually run from System 7.1.x to OS 8.1. The system
you're running now, 8.0 suffers from bugs fixed in 8.1, so firstly backup your
drive and update your OS to 8.1 (the Office 98 CD has this updates and other OS
updates included). If you have access to a removable boot-up source, hard
drive, zip drive or the like, you may want to try 7.5.3 or 7.1.x with all of th
eir updates to see if you like their speed increase (if you need links for more
on this, email me).

7.1.x, 7.5.3 and 8.1 are all nice and have their pros and cons. For OS 8.1,
what you will benefit most from is as much ram as can be installed on it. Then,
if it's possible and reasonable to do so, a bigger and faster hard drive is a
great booster. These two will assist in the speedup your looking for. Also
ensure that you have Appletalk off if your not on a network, it wastes extra ram
space and can slow things down down. Extra extensions and installed fonts can
also slow things up.

As far as browsers, the most up-to-date browser for this powerbook is iCab
and disabling images will definitely speed it up. Opera is yet to deliver it's
non-PowerPC version, so don't hold your breath on it. Other browser tricks
include setting up a ram disk and telling your browser to use it as it's web
cache. I'm not sure if this powerbook could be installed more ram than the OS can
use and have a 3rd party ram disk application use that as a ram disk ...

Lastly, Microsoft's last version of Office that run on this powerbook is
4.2.1; 98 is PowerPC-only. Fortunately, they do have downloadable updates to
import newer Word and Excel files (I only use Word on my older Macs, so I only know
those updates). You can even use these updates on Word 5, which is faster on
the 520, and has less fancy features.

Hope that helps!
Craig

RamDoubler uses an algorithm of some kind to double the effective
memory space (sorta like compressing a .sit or .zip file). This slows
down all RAM reads and writes because the compressed data stored in the
physical RAM has to be decompressed. There are some hacks for really
old versions of RamDoubler that let you increase the compression factor
from 2 up to something utterly ridiculous like 16 (i.e. 2 MB physical
RAM = 32 MB useable RAM!!). As the ratio gets higher, performance
suffers.

MacOS VM, in any version, uses hard drive space to supplement the
physical RAM. As a result, any access to the "virtual" area of
addressable RAM (the part that is actually on the hard drive) is slowed
down to the hard drive's speed, which is much much slower than any RAM.
And requires access to the hard disk, making it a bad idea for
PowerBook users on battery.

In my experience (admittedly limited to System 7.x) this is the order
of perfomance, from best to worst:

Neither
RamDoubler (2x if adjustable)
RamDoubler (any other setting)
Virtual Memory (distant fourth)

Absolutely. I had it on mine (48 mb real RAM) and it was a complete and
utter slug.

I've got 8.6 on it right now, and it's much better. No speed demon, of
courtse but it's considerably better.

I do. It's too slow even at full ram load. ACHingly slow. Even with cf.
8.6 is very nice...7.6.1 seems fastest and is definitely light.

This link http://www.penmachine.com/techie/airport1400.html says that it is:

"The PowerBook 5300, 2400, 3400, and G3s also have PC Card slots, with
similar benefits. Even the pre-PowerPC PowerBook 500 series can go wireless
with some luck and effort (see the "another note" below).

NOTE: I had initially thought, as Accelerate Your Mac reported, that the
even-older PowerBook 5300-infamous for some units' catching on fire in the
mid-'90s-could only be corralled into working with 802.11b/AirPort networks
using an older version (release 6.0) of the ORiNOCO/WaveLAN driver, as well
as Mac OS 8.6, since 9 is too slow on that ancient hardware.

Andrew Kershaw, developer of ClassicStumbler (mentioned below), reveals that
my directions here "work 100% on a 5300 with OS 8.6. I set up my 5300ce and
5300cs a while back with WaveLAN Silvers and ORiNOCO 7.2 drivers." So there
you have it. 5300 owners, go wild."

Powerbook 160 OS and browser recommendations

2003-06-10 Thread Brian M
Afternoon All
Thanks for the suggestions re the 140 -
I have reset the power manager repeatedly and tried the other
suggestions with no luck.
Would the gentleman that offered me a couple of new boards contact me
again? I've lost your info.

I'm trying Battery Amnesia to revive the batteries I have with my 160 -
I think about 5 minutes is as good as they are going to get. Not a big
deal at this point.

So now I have another couple of questions :-)
The 160 I purchased is OS7.1 with 10meg of ram.
I'd like to do simple email and dialup browsing.
I don't expect java, flash etc to work.
I'd actually be happy to leave it system 7.1.
Currently it has an older Eudora (which should be fine) and NCSA/Mosaic
2.0 :-)
How far forward could/should I go with OS?
What's the recommended lightweight browser?

Any suggestions welcome
Brian

PB 520c and 3com PC Card Speeds

2003-06-10 Thread maxtek
Hi Listers,

I have a PB 520c and am trying to use a 3com Megahertz 56k Global Modem PC
Card (Model #3CCM156).

I consistently get speeds of only 31,200 even though on the same line with
my other mac I can get as high as 48,xxx.

I am using the "Megahertz v.90 Modems" modem script found on the 3com site.

Any ideas on why I can or cannot equal the speeds of my other mac?

Thanks,

MaxTek
