The printer port is slow, about 230kpbs max. Basic 10Base-T ethernet
(the most common kind) is 10Mbps max ( =10,000kbps ). You are using
Appletalk over serial ports(aka LocalTalk). Trying to run TCP/IP over
serial ports is a royal pain, and all it does is put TCP/IP in
Appletalk packets: it would be slower b/c of the translation. Using any
protocol (Appletalk,TCP/IP,whatever) over ethernet is guaranteed to be
faster. Appletalk over ethernet (aka EtherTalk) is easy to set up. Like
the other post said, cheapest way is to get a crossover cable. Better
way would be to get a hub. They are really cheap and leave you room for
expansion, (i.e. a network printer, another computer, etc.). The
differences in speed between protocols is basically unimportant on a
two-computer network that isn't heavily used. Besides, nothing will
compare to the difference between LocalTalk and EtherTalk.

It's 2 AM now, so there may be some inaccuracies. Bottom line: ethernet
always faster than serial.

Absolutely.

You'll need an ethernet card for the 190, since I don't think that's
built-in. If it is all the better.

Nope, the 190 will indeed need a PC Card Ethernet NIC.

The *cheapest* way is to connect the two with a crossover cable, but you
will run into the situation whereby the first mac booting up will not
'see' anything on the ethernet, and set it's appletalk back to the
prnter port. You'll have to be constantly turning appletalk back to the
ethernet port on one or the other of the systems if you do it this way.

Yes, none of the above includes IP. But simply using AppleTalk over
Ethernet (which is EtherTalk) will give a tremendous speed
improvement. To us IP the 6320 would have to be running OS 9 to
support AppleSHARE over IP. The PB190 will need to be running OS 8.1
or have the updated AppleShare Extension to use ASIP. This will give
a modest improvement over AppleShare over AT.

It's either OS 8.6 or OS 9 where you pick up the capability to do TCP/IP
filesharing.

I should also mention that under the "Missing extensions" entry in the
Control panels submenu of the apple menu it says that the pc card extension
is missing. If I need that is there anyplace I can download it; the
powerbook came without system disks or cd?
That's the missing piece, and without the OS cd, you're screwed in general.

I would look for a OS 8.1 CD (I've seen them go for ~ $10 on the LEM
swaplist recently) and upgrade your system from that, then the wirelss
should work fine.

OS 8.1 is superior to 7.6, and not nearly as resource hungry as 8.6. If
you upgrade that 1400 to 64 mb I'd recommend 8.6 though, as it keeps
you closer to modernity. It will run up to 9.1, but even on 64 megs OS9
takes a big chunk o' memory.

That would be the mythical and rare Rev C pcmcia adapter. It will work

I think that is a Rev C module which PPC upgraded 5xx need - they can't use
the earlier Rev A or B.

I've not seen that earlier 5xx can't use a C only that PPC need the C
version.
