Re: 3400 observations

2003-07-12 Thread David T.
I find system 9.1 more responsive on my 200mhz/144 ram. I even have loaded
Speed Doubler 8 on the 8.6 partition to try to get it to be more
responsive.

I have a 3400c 240mhz with 144 MB of ram. I run a 32 gig 5400 rpm HD and I
have three partitions running the original 7.6 OS, OS 8.6 and OS 9.1. I
notice no difference between the three OS's. I hardly never use 7.6 to know
how fast it really is...it's just nice having it there to take up some space
:) However 9.1 and 8.6 I use daily and I don't notice a difference between
the two in terms of speed.

Portable StyleWriter

2003-07-12 Thread William Hill
I just scored a portable stylewriter at the Goodwill for $2.00. Then I found
the power and parallel cables in the doller bin. I get the thing home and
download the driver from apple and, it works. It even has a good ink tank.
But I need some info. about charging the battery (it could be dead). If
someone has anything on this please let me know. I did a search but can't
find a manual. Thanks..

Re: 3400 observations

2003-07-12 Thread k
Hello,
Just some observations with my powerbook 3400. I have the 4 g drive
partitioned into 2: one runs system 9.1 and the other 8.6.
I know some people have found system 8.6 to be faster, but I find
system 9.1 more responsive on my 200mhz/144 ram. I even have loaded
Speed Doubler 8 on the 8.6 partition to try to get it to be more
responsive.
Could it be that the OS 9.1 load different extensions related to
screendrawing skills ? There are some in 8.6 that will make the 3400
more responsive.

firewire on the 3400?

2003-07-12 Thread K
Having got the Macally usb card to mount after shaving off a bit of
the left side of the connector, I was now wondering if there was a
firewire card for the 3400.
Earlier someone on the list suggested trying a refurbished card from
SmartDisk.com , but they say it is not supported. (of course it
wouldn't be).
However, has anyone tried this card or got any other recommendations
for a pcmcia firewire card that might work with the 3400?
Thanks

1400/G3 and Netscape 7 ?

2003-07-12 Thread macnifico
Yesterday I installed Netscape 7.02 on my 1400cs/NuPowerG3 running
9.1, but it won't run

===

Hi, Tina!

I'm running 7.0.1 on a 1400c/233 MHz G3/64Mb/OS 0.1.
It runs fast, faster than Explorer, and opens everything, even pages
that gives iCab fits.
I hope that the new version didn't mess up something.
Best regards.

Thank you, Brian.
In googling for a picture or further info, I came

IMHO

It is the button that you sometimes need a match to push on the

I don't think there IS a reset button inside the unit. Some desktops have
a CUDA, that's the only reset I've ever heard of/noticed inside a Mac. Not
that i've opened all models.

A listing of how to reset the power manager for each powerbook is at:

Hi,
This is the keyboard command to reset the PMU (I
guess) - what I'm looking for. This way you don't have
to open up the case and look for a button reset.

Re: 1400/G3 and Netscape 7 ?

2003-07-12 Thread David Allen
I had 7 running on my 1400/G3/60 Meg +VM for 128 Meg with no problems. I
took it out as 4.75 works much smoother and better for most things. (I
had to download the 7 installer a couple of times before I could get it to
install properly.)

There are a few sites that won't work with 4.x anymore and many older
sites that don't open properly in 7! For some reason 7 (and Mozilla, on
which it is based) have problems with older frames .html code. An example
is my company web site. It opens in any other browser as a split screen,
but in 7 opens with the right side blank and opens the right side frames
as a new page when the links on the left frame are clicked.)

For the sites that don't work with 4.7x I use iCab. ( I use the free 2.9.1
version. Very small memory use and fast site navigation.) Seems to open
anything 7 (or IE) does except email, which is why I still use 4.7x.

7 needs Carbon (I think), so 8.6 (maybe 8.1 but I had problems running even
Netscape 4.8 in 8.1).

However, why won't 9.1 let you turn VM off? How much RAM is in your 1400?
I can turn VM off on my 60MB 9.1 1400, although I note with irritation I
have about 2MB left to run applications ;-)

Netscape 7 requires Mac OS 8.6 or later.

2003-07-12 Thread Tina Holm
Yesterday I installed Netscape 7.02 on my 1400cs/NuPowerG3 running

It installed without problems or protest, it fires up with the splash
screen, but then just gives me an empty window, which I assume is the
registration suggestion dialog window, then nothing. If I close the
wondow, Netscape quits.

Any suggestions? Oh, and since I'm considering a downgrade to 8.5.1
(9.1 will not let me turn off VM and I prefer Ram Doubler), does
anyone know if NS 7 will run with that?
