Hello Martin:

There are actually several people (on this list) who know quite a lot
about PB batteries the NiCad, NiMH, and Lithium ion types and PBs, and
qualify for your flattering title of PB Guru.

There are ways of resurrecting old batteries that I have had success
with that I promise to post tomorrow, but it's too late tonight to go
into that much detail. I also need time to find the one or two URLs
that I know that detail (with pictures) how to cut a laptop battery apart.

So, please wait for tomorrow and I will do my best to help with as much
as I know.

Sincerely yours, Grizzlygiant

Battery Rebuilding Info?

2003-07-22 Thread Bob C.
I'm considering the idea of rebuilding one of my PowerBook 170 batteries.
I was wondering if there are any sites on the 'net that would have some
clear instructions on opening the plastic case, specs on the proper NiCd
cells themselves, and any tips for successful replacement.

TIA,
Bob

Re: Using IDE drives in a SCSI powerbook

2003-07-22 Thread Dan K
Some of what I know . . .

I'm aware of five IDE-to-SCSI adapters, ACARD, ADTX, Addonics, Artmix and
Century. Of those, I have a pair each of the ADTX and Century adapters.

The ACARD adapter is no longer being made according to the ACARD engineer
with whom I spoke last week at MacWorld/CreativePro NY. I'd never heard
of an ACARD 2.5" adapter until last weeek, but this engineer told me they
did indeed make such an animal at one point.

ADTX may still make their adapter, at least it is still listed on their
website. This was the unit Apple sold attached to a 1GB drive for use in
scsi PBs. The same drive/adapter combo was sold by aftermarket vendors
(eg: MicroTech) for PowerBooks, SparcBooks, etc. Apparently IBM owns
(owned?) a piece of ADTX.

There's more than one version of ADTX adapter:

The Addonics item linked below is for an adapter for 3.5" HDs, I don't
know if they make anything for 2.5". I don't know anything else about
this outfit.

Artmix looks almost like some kind of Mac 'club' or co-operative, here's
a product page link:

and some more info about the Artmix adapter:

Century's is currently available, one of mine is in a PPC540C/166
attached to an IBM 30 gigger:

With the Apple 1GB+ADTX PB SCSI drive, you can replace the drive with any
12.5mm or thinner IDE drive. However my ADTX adapters can recognize only
a max of ~8GB, where the Century adapters have a 32GB limit. Also, the
ADTX adapters I have are somewhat slow, the Century is faster (ADTX =
~400K/s vs. Century = ~1.1MB/S) in a PB 500. Of course, none of any of
these adapters can make anywhere near complete use of modern HD speed as
a SCSI PowerBook's scsi bus is the bottleneck.

The Century adapter is not cheap at ~$90, the Artmix item costs less and
is probably the fastest, but I don't know if they will ship to the US. An
ADTX adapter (most likely still attached to its original HD) can be had
on eBay for $20 to $100 depending on the phase of the moon, the current
Dow index level . . . etc. :-)

Another maker may have entered the market, I hope to examine a sample
soon. I'll report back when I'm able.

hth,

Dan K

Re: PB 500 Series Batteries

2003-07-22 Thread Christopher Spangler
DeVaul--

I was interested in doing this myself (PB 540c, as well), but since my
PB is destined for other purposes (picture frame!), I abandoned the
idea.

BUT, not before I found what seems to be a good stateside source for the
A-sized cells needed to perform the operation. Try this place:
http://nicdlady.com/cell_pr.htm#nickel. (I guess that's pronounced
"Naked Lady"?) The e-mail I sent was replied to quickly and they said
they had the Sanyo HR-AU in stock. 2700 mAh for $4.00 each! Others can
speak to the process, but opening my battery up with an exacto knife was
an easier task than I imagined; just be careful that you don't cut too
far past the seam, or else you'll end up slicing traces on the little
PCB in there. Good luck!

PB 500 Series Batteries

2003-07-22 Thread DeVaul Martin
Hi all,

I am back on the list after many years. I resurrected my old 540c to fix up
for my son, who wants his own computer now to play games on. (He is 5 years
old, so they will be simple games).

Going through all my stuff, I realized I had not charged two perfect
Intelligent Batteries for over a year, and now they have a small problem
each. Very aggravating, as I paid alot of money for them long ago.
However, they still work.

My problem is that I now have 4 dead batteries (shorted cells, E1 errors,
etc.). I do not want to throw them away because its against the law first
off and secondly I remember reading somewhere about a person who could open
them and attempt to repair them.

Does anyone know where I could find this PB guru or if anyone knows someone
who can repair these batteries? I would be willing to pay for it if the the
price is not too high. I would like to save them rather than toss them if I
can.

Thanks for any info you can provide me.

DeVaul
