Wow. I did almost the exact same thing you did to get my cards to work.
Except I just hacked the whole notch off altogether, instead of filing it
down to match that of a 16bit card.

300mhz would be so hot.

Also amazed at how similar our email addresses are.

Re: 3400c adventures...

2003-12-06 Thread KG
It's incredible how much life is left in those old 3400s, isn't it?

I picked up a 3400/240 off the swaplist this summer just to have a little
more portable power than my old 5300c/100, and was amazed at how capable it
still was. I got the wireless working myself, and use the 3400 out on the
deck a lot. I don't even miss the 2.25 GHz Windoze tower in the den.

You really should pick up the MCE Zip 100 drive for the 3400, you would be
surprised how useful it can be. It stays in my 3400's expansion bay most of
the time.

Impressed that you got 9.2.2 working well. Mine is stable as a rock in 9.1
but unstable in any version of 9.2. I ended up re-blessing the 9.1 folder
and updating the Finder and Open Transport components with their 9.2
versions, and got the benefit of 9.2's added responsiveness that way.

Have you tried to hack OS X 10.1.5 on there yet? I know the 3400 can take
it, though I'm sure it must crawl on one. I did a page on my site:
http://www.athalawulf.com/3400desktop.htm not too long ago about my own 3400
desktop, mimicking some of the OS X features with third-party utilities.

Long live the Hooper!

Midi cords and replacement floppys

2003-12-06 Thread Al Morris
I'm in the market for a midi cord or two for my powerbook 5300 and also
a replacement for the removeable floppy.

By the way, i think the 5300 is a terrific machine and use it almost
nightly with my profession as a piano bar entertainer. I use band in a
box software
as my bass, guitar and drums and I play the piano and sing. I have
over 2500 tunes on it and it has never crashed on me. I midi out into
a Jenson synth module
for the sounds from the software and run that thru a sound system. I
also have about 200 song lyrics on board that I've downloaded from the
many lyric sites
available.

So, i think the 5300 is terrific.

HI all,

never
could find a 5300 manual on the net.
Is the vram upgradable to thousands of colors, from hundreds?
This is my biggest turnoff of this machine, is it's hundreds of

so
far anyway.
Thinking about selling it, unless the internal battery is easy to
change,
and/or
the vram is upgradeable.
So far it's a word processing machine.

Re: Powerbook 270C Write protected SCSI Drive

2003-12-06 Thread The Calypso Organization
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
We have just aquired a PB 270C running Os 7.5.1.
Its a nice machine full off really useful programmes but there is a minor
fault or faults to be precise,on the HD. Clicking any sub-menu on the
drop-down menu (from the 'Apple' top left) freezes the machine.
Disk repair finds this and some other faults but tells us the drive is
write-protected - so we can neither repair it, or re install ,or upgrade
without a complete re-initialisation which will lose us the programmes on it
we'de like to keep.
Is there any way of turning of the write-protection on this drive that
anyone more familiar with these machines may know about??
TIA

Gerald

I'll have to give your hacked AP 1.3.1 installer a go when I can. Though
I've never had any problem using TomeViewer I imagine for many the
simplicity of using an installer will be much appreciated.

A heads-up though, copyright issues can be problematic (with Apple
especially.) A good workaround is to build a patcher for the regular
installer so's you don't have to keep an actual hacked copy in your
webspace. Not only does that greatly reduce space and bandwidth
requirements for you, but also significantly lowers your legal exposure.
While there are many tools one can use for such tasks, I've had excellent
results using ResCompare.

2003-12-06 Thread Andrew Kershaw
Andrew Mr. 5300 Kershaw doesn't know Mustang was a codeword for that

Heh, right!

Actually, the problem is that Gestlab lists the Mustang as having a
different mach gestalt than the 5300, while it doesn't list the Kanga
at all. 311 is similar to 306/7 for 2400/3400 and close to 312/14
for G3 Series (Wallstreet).

Supposedly, the Mustang gestalt is found in the 1400's ATA code,
not the 5300. Actually, M2 was the 5300. I think Mustang was some
sort of bastard mutant between 5300 and 1400. Maybe the rumored 5300
w/ CD-ROM?

In any case, I think I've found the right gestalt for the Kanga. It
should be 313. Anybody with a Kanga care to corroborate? You'll
need a tool that reports gestalt values to check - something like
Gestlab should work well.

Peace,
Drew
