Re: 2.5" cabling needed

2003-12-28 Thread Andrew Kershaw
Mark,

This isn't really an answer to your request, but have you considered
posting your project over at AppleFritter? This would fit in
perfectly in the "Hacks" forum there!

I'm a lurker who only recently started posting in that forum. My ID
is "alk" (yeah, creative). There are some other folks on this list
who are active members over there, too (like Mad Dog).

Plus, there are several forum members from the UK who may be of some
help to you directly...

Peace,
Drew

2.5" cabling needed

2003-12-28 Thread Mark Benson
I need a source for components or built-up cabling for 2.5" ATA hard
disks in the UK (preferably) or abroad. Most immediately I need a 2.5"
Male to Female ribbon about 4" long to allow me to mount the drive in
my 5300 project in the drive bay of the LCII case.

All help appreciated. Person's willing who can prove themselves as a
truistworthy trader may also act as a go-between for US markets if
required. Contact me of-list if you think you have a lead.

Thankx

I had this problem on a 5300 PB. t turned out to be because I was
trying to boot Mac OS 9 on only 8MB off RAM. I think it needs a bare
minimum of 16MB to boot. I solved my bother by slapping a 48MB
expansion board on the 5300 - booted up no problem. I have found that
moving the board (as I do alot when trying to build it into an LCII
case!!) tends to loosen the memory board and it occasionally still
gives the same sad mac, but only until i power it down and push the
board home again.

On the parts unit or the other one? I've pulled all expansion ram from the parts
unit, it still boots to smiley mac but then has the 4 tone error 000F. This leads
me to think that the 4 megs or whatever is permanent on the mainboard is bad, and I'm
not going to get anywhre with that parts mainboard.
the working one that died has 2 24 meg expansion cards,

I'll have some time tonight to swap parts back and forth.

Thanks,

Brian

dead 1400- help!

2003-12-28 Thread bmcewen

I'm on vacation, the 1400 is dead- it died the night before I left- I was backing up
image files to the LAN, went to bed, in the AM it was off and unresponsive. No chime,
no lights, no nothing

I threw in a parts 1400 in my bag, brought them both, but it is not going to be a
drop-in replacement- I think it has bad RAM on the mainboard (there is more RAM
nbesides the little 4 meg Apple chip right? (not counting the 48 meg stacked))?
anyway the parts machine give sad chimes and a 00F 069 RAM error a little
while after the happy mac.

I first thought the power supply was dead, but with the power in, the PC cards eject
with the button, which is a powered circuit I think- is there any resistor that I
could swap out?

I can try swapping processors, displays, and removing things like the video out card,
but that's about it. I do have access to a shop that would have replacement resistors
though.

thanks for thoughts;

Brian

3400/ usb camera recommendations?

2003-12-28 Thread kaldav
Hello,
I have been able to get usb to work with system 9.1 with a zip drive
and a usb fan!!
However, when installing my Ixla digital camera software, the
installer removed all the USB system extensions I had installed, then
when I plugged it into the Macally usb card, it froze the system.
Therefore, can anyone recommend a digital camera that will connect
via the usb Macally card on a 3400 and will also work with system OSX
on a later ibook? Thanks.

3400 to re-set PRAM, Power Manager?

2003-12-28 Thread kaldav
Hello,
I would like to check the procedure to reset the PRAM settings and
the Power Manager on the 3400. (Does one first take out the battery
before re-setting the PRAM? Are there any errors in these
instructions before I try them? Thanks for advice)

To Re-set PRAM
1. Shut down powerbook, making sure Caps Lock is not on. Unplug AC adapter.
3. Press on Power Key and immediately hold down P - R - Option - Command keys.
3. Keep holding down the 4 keys until a start up chime sounds after
the initial startup chime.
(The screen may go dark/blank and the screen's green sleep light may
stay on but not blink)
4. If the computer shuts itself off, press the Reset button at the
back to turn the powerbook on.
(If it still does not start, turn it on by pressing the Power key on
the keyboard)
5. After the computer has started up, select Shut Down from the Special menu.
6. Plug in the AC adapter. If the computer stays shut down, you have
successfully reset the PRAM and Power Manager. Then restore any
custom setting for the desktop, memory, network, Appletalk, trackpad,
etc.

To Re-set Power Manager
However, if the computer powers on when you plug in the AC adapter,
reset the Power Manager by:
1. Remove battery. Disconnect AC adapter and unplug it from the wall outlet.
2. Press and hold Reset button for at least one minute.
3. Plug AC adapter to the wall outlet, then into the powerbook.
4. The powerbook may start up. You should be able to choose Shut Down
from the Special menu.
