If both computers are on the internet, just email the file to yourself. I
have done this to get big files from the DSL/mac to the Dialup/windoze pc.

Re: apple

2004-01-06 Thread Richard Adams
I agree, Drew, and not just because I'm The Winfidel(;^{)). Apple
determines who their vendors are, not the end user. It may not be Apple's
FAULT, but it is their RESPONSIBILITY to take care of it. It would be a
different story if the end user was picking and choosing the components, but
they aren't. The disappointing thing is that so many people attest that
Apple denied or abdicated their responsibility for the video chip failure,
much as they did with the 5300's and their well documented problems.

But other than that, the 5300 is a terrible example. The reason Apple kept
repairing them is _because_ they were so shoddy. IIRC, class action
lawsuit against Apple required them to support the 5300 for as long as they
did. Technically, California law held them to supporting the 5300 for 7
years from the last date of manufacture (which ended just this summer).

The REA was not a result of Apple being a good corporate citizen. It was
because they really screwed up the 5300 and were forced to fix them.

My feelings are that if Apple released a machine with poor quality due to
poor QA (even if it's not an Apple part that failed - and then what _would_
count as an Apple part? Virtually every ASIC on the board is designed by a
3rd party - very little is Apple custom. And NONE of it was fabbed by
Apple.), then Apple should have to pay the piper. Apple sells the box,
Apple supports the box, Apple should FIX the box.

Peace,
Drew

FileMaker Pro also works very well for transfering data cross platform.
Need the program on both computers. Once transfered, FileMaker Pro has many
forms the data can be exported in to a number of programs. Years of data,
going back to 1976 for a 15+ school school district was all on Macs. The
district decided to buy IBM clones. All files were imported into FileMake
Pro and then transfered to the IBM clones - Gateway and Dell. All data was
preserved and transfered without problem.

FileMaker Pro has been useful to import data from programs such as Aeries
and California state testing data in ASCII fixed format opened with Excel
import nicely into FileMaker Pro, a much more flexible program than Aeries,
allowing for extensive longitudinal data comparison.

I don't work for FileMaker Pro but I couldn't meet ever changing State and
Federal regulations and reports without it.

Microsoft Word seems to work cross platform well enough for text if you use
the correct versions.

These cross platform transferes have made via email, 3.5 in. diskettes and
CDs both ways.

I don't know about Dramatica, but you shouldn't have any
trouble with Final Draft. The program is set up so that a
Mac can read what was written on Windows and vice versa
  without any conversions.

My problem is that so far anything other than a .txt file has been unable
to
be read on the Mac. Everything comes up something to the effect of it
can't
read the file type 'PC'. This has been to .sea, .hqx files etc. I can't
seem
to get any file from the online world that go through the Windows box to
be
read. Mac versions of programs that are put onto floppy from the Windows
machine get the same can't fopen file type 'PC' error

tell me the history of this game and where may I get it for him? I don't know its

Run, or anyone, can a CD unit be added to this computer?

My original problem was (and still is) I was trying to upgrade to 8.6 which
is available free but y windows machine is the one that is connected to the
internet, the Mac is not or I would just use it to download the files I
need to upgrade and would email the Final Draft/Dramatica files back and
forth to myself. The reason I want to do it this way is cost. I can use the
system as is for everything I want and don't want to spend so much on things
that I'm halfway to a new system in costs.

I appreciate all of the help so far

Terrie, CD drive modules are available. Slip into the right hand expansion bay.
Speeds ; 6X, 8X, 12X, I believe.
Try the Swap list or eBay ...

2004-01-06 Thread David Thrower
Hi,
You can definitely add a CD-ROM module into the
expansion bay, these are available on eBay for 30-80
dollars, depending on the speed. I would pay no more
than $35 for a 6X, no more than $50 for an 8X, and no
more than $70 for a 12X. I managed to get a 12X for
$33, but that's pretty durn lucky.
I don't know which pool games off the top of my
head are likely candidates, but I would look at the
games here:

http://www.pure-mac.com/sports.html

...there are a couple of pool games, maybe one of them
is the one.

Best Regards,
David Thrower

You might try going to the System Folder
open it and go to the Preference Folder
Find the preference file for the pool game
and drag only that preference file to the trash.
Sometimes this starts the game over like you have never played it
before.
It may work or it may not.

Tale of Woe: CF card, VM, 1400c

2004-01-06 Thread Milind Limaye
Well,

As per the instructions on the Low End Mac website, I tried to make a
Compact Flash card work with my Powerbook 1400c. The goal was to take a 256
meg compact flash card, use a PCMCIA compact flash adapter, and format it as
a Mac drive...then map Virtual Memory to it and get a machine that had to
access the hard drive less.

Anyhow, it's not working.

The CF card went into the PCMCIA adapter and was formatted and recognized.
I can drag files to it and from it without a problem. But when I go to the
memory control panel and select it as the destination for the Virtual Memory
swap file and reboot...VM is still hanging around on the hard disk.

Suggestions? Can VM not be mapped away from the startup drive? Is there
something I'm missing?

Thanks.

Machine: PB 1400c, 48 megs of physical RAM, OS 8.6, 256 meg Fuji CF card
PCMCIA adapter...
