BeOS on 3400c?

2004-03-02 Thread Andrew Kershaw
Is it possible?

Has anyone tried? BeOS requires a PCI architecture, and other than
that, it supports most of the standard Mac hardware. I wonder...

I've got BeOS 4.5, and I'm really thinking about (finally) picking up
a 3400c... ;-)

Peace,
Drew

A number of people have said that the hacked Farallon driver I maintain for
EtherLink III 3C589-series cards works fine on the 190. I don't have a 190
of my own to confirm this, but EtherLink IIIs are cheap enough to make it
worth a shot. Obviously, it works fine on my 1400.

Re: Serial Comms on 190

2004-03-02 Thread lesher

So I've been given a 190. It's running 7.5.2.
Lacking Ethernet {for now; I keep looking for PCMCIA cards with drivers},
I'd like to use it as a serial port monitor on the firewall.

Where might I find an Ethernet card?

Better way to put it -- where do I find a reference as to what cards are
useable?

More dumb questions

It it worthwhile upgrading to OS8.1? Where would I find it? [Has it been
"free'ed" by Apple?]

Reading the discussion on 802.11 cards & other PB's; should I look for one
instead/in addition to a {wired} Ethernet card?

Hello Kaldav:

I have found that mine works best simply using the built in headphone
plug. This way, even if you close the control panel, you can still
hear the music.

The radio software can do software play through, but I am reasonably
certain that it uses the harddrive for this, as I have had the same
problem. Play through is the major problem here, and desktops (most)
can do it in hardware, some notebooks can, some can't.

Sincerely yours, Grizzlygiant

It sure is! Check out

haven't done it myself as I find surfing to be painfully slow on my stock

though.

160 display/monitor??

2004-03-02 Thread Grace Tallman Gooding
Hey, I asked this before, but didn't see a reply (I might have missed it
with problems with email & phone).

I got a PB160 off ebay and the guy claimed it worked. After I finally got
the power cord (that he forgot to send the first time), I plug it in and
try to power up and I get noises but NOTHING on the monitor/display. The
monitor lights up and I can adjust the brightness/contrast sliders, but I
can't see anything going on.

The guy I got it from doesn't seem to know anything about it, which is not
helpful. Is there some easy fix for this? Anyway to find out if it is
really working in there? Someone at husband's work suggested hooking it up
to a monitor, but I'm not sure I have the right cables...

Anyone have a suggestion about what to do next? I would really like to get
it working, but this is my first laptop and I don't have all that much
experience with hardware issues. My G3 and my Powermac 7100 were hoping
this would be another FUNCTIONING member of the family (the SE was working
until I stole the SCSI cable to hook up my scanner).

TIA,
grace :)

Apple CD 300

2004-03-02 Thread Grace Tallman Gooding
I picked up an old external CD drive today but it doesn't have any cables.

IF I get this PB160 working, anyone know what cables (this PB to 50 pin
centronix SCSI??) I will need and where to find a driver that will work
with the CD drive?

Any favorite source for SCSI cables, SCSI terminators??

Thanks,
grace :)

other components? This sounds like it could improve desktop
performance too! Great fun as well! Thanks in advance!

WIreless not working: 520c

2004-03-02 Thread Howard R. Katz
I'm not sure what's happening here and I hope someone's come across this
themselves.

For the last 5 months I've been happily using wireless with a Rev.C
adapter on my PPC'd 520c, using the Proxim Skyline card.

This weekend I upgraded the OS from 7.6.2 to 8.1, and today I tried the
wireless at a hotspot for the 1st time since the upgrade. (Upgrade didn't
go easily--had to reinstall 3 times and then it only worked when I wiped
the HD and then copied everything back from the backup I had made prior to
starting.)

I plugged the adapter, inserted the card, turned it all on. I found that
I had to reinstall the drivers. No problem. Did that. The card only lit
up on startup every other time, and when it did stay on, the computer
locked up when I tried to open a browser or a telnet program. Then it
stopped lighting up at all.

A rattling from the adapter (I had dropped it a while back on a tile
floor) made me think there was something loose so I opened it up when I
got home and found a spring on the left side off. I reattached it where
it looks like it's supposed to go (mech. to eject the card?) and started
again. Still no light on the card, and the wireless control panel says no
card installed. Tried booting into 7.6.1 from the backup and still no
lights.

Keeping in mind that I have no other computer test the card on: is it
possible that the adapter shorted out somehow and is not working? Is it
possible for the wifi card to be bad? Any suggestions that anyone can
give me? I'm not sure who I know would have a computer that I could plug
the card into to see if it'll power up.

I CAN still connect via the aaui connector (like right now) so it's not
like I'm not able to connect out, just not wireless, and I liked that
option. :)

(Now if I could only get this one battery to not keep popping out all
the time.)

Later.Howard

Everything you said is accurate. You can install a hacked version of Apple's
USB support software and shave a USB card, or you can get MCE to do the
actual modification and it will fit properly.

I haven't, but I know someone who did do it, and to say that the 3400 was
"running" 10.1 would be a misnomer. Crawling was more like it. You could
time the screen refresh with a sundial, and that was with a 240 MHz version.

OS 9.1 or 9.2 works best because a 3400 is capable of running it well (you'd
have to hack 9.2 onto it, though); OS 8.6 is nearly as functional and
somewhat faster. It flies in 7.6 or 8.1, but that's kind of a waste of a
still very-good PowerBook. I run 9.1 on my 3400c/240, but replaced the
Finder, TCP/IP and OT components with the versions from 9.2.2 for a little
bit of a performance boost.

Lacie FM radio not working reliably

Hello,
Several have posted queries regarding the Lacie FM Radio. Looking at
the box , it says "Requirements are: any desktop Mac. Not guaranteed

I have not been able to get it to play without choppy sound on my
