THANKS so much Roger!!!

I am, of course, marginally terrified to open it up, but, I guess it might
be un-avoidable.

540 screen fading to black in the corners

2004-03-03 Thread Tricia Adams
Hello,

I have a 540 with a screen that starts to fade to black in
the corners. When I first start it up, the screen is fine.
Then the corners start to turn black, a little at first,
then slowly creeping into the center. I haven't left it on
long enough to see if it completely blacks out, but it does
eventually reduce the visible screen to a circle.

My questions:

Does this mean the screen is dying?

Is the only way to 'cure' it to replace it?

If I do have to replace it, is it possible to replace it
with a 540c screen?

My thanks for your help.

Regards,
Tricia Adams

What's BeOS Max Edition? ... A lot of good it does you if you can't
use the keyboard... ;-)

BeOS Max is basically a development of the freely released beos
personal edition (for PCs) but I doesn't need windows. The 'real' BeOS
PE won't work at all in virtual PC so I was pleased with it (I don't
think BeOS supports USB keyboards). http://www.beosmax.org/main.php

Re: BeOS on 3400c?

2004-03-03 Thread Andrew Kershaw
Was there ever a free version as there is for PC? I love beos max
edition now. It runs in virtual PC, unless you use the keyboard,
which hangs it.
What's BeOS Max Edition? ... A lot of good it does you if you can't
use the keyboard... ;-)

BeOS system requirements are basically this:

PowerMac with a PCI bus and PowerPC 603/604-class processor.
Consequently, it won't run on any of the x100 PowerMacs, the
6200/6300 series, or the G3 and up. It's unsupported on the
5400/5500, but works fine (and _was_ -- before Be, Inc. folded --
supported on the 6400/6500). It works very well on 7500/7600/7300
(7500 must be upgraded from original 601), 8500/8600 and 9500/9600
class Macs and clones. It supports only built-in SCSI and ethernet
controllers, and only supports built-in or OEM video cards (like the
TwinTurbo or Mach64). It works really well with multiple processor
Macs like the Daystar Genesis or 9600 MP. It even works with G3
upgrade cards, but not G4 cards, IIRC.

My concern with the 3400c is that the video controller, ethernet, or
IDE controller won't work. Everything else (heh, what's left?)
should be close enough to standard 603e-class Mac hardware that it
should work fine. If the ethernet on the 3400c is MACE ethernet,
that'll work fine, too.

There was never a free download of BeOS. I own a copy of BeOS R4.5
for my PowerTower Pro, but don't have it installed (mostly because I
can't find a modern browser for it). The 3400c I was going to buy
got sold to someone else while I was in negotiations to buy it (darn
swap list)... So this project will have to wait a while. :-(

Peace,
Drew

Generic SCSI stuff is everywhere in the surplus/hamfest market. You might
also try places like Electronicsurplus.com, Halted, compgeeks, etc.

Grace,

I would imagin that someone on the LEM list hasthe adapter(HDI 30 to DB25
and cable DB25 to 50 pin centronix you'll also need 2 terminators 1 a pass
thru for 50 pin centronix as the SCSI device must be terminated on the input
and output.

Re: 160 display/monitor??

2004-03-03 Thread Volk (contractor)
Grace,

There are video cable connections in the area of the adjustment sliders
internal to the machine, the problem could also lie with the main interconnect
cable to the upper and lower halves of the machine. For directions on
disassembly go to http://www.academ.com/info/macintosh and go to the Powerbook
section. Other good info can be had from http://www.lowendmac.com/, MacFixit,
and The Mac Freak site. For Power Manager problems with this series of
machines http://www.westwind.com/reference/TN/PMreset.html has the info, in
fact you might want to try this first.

Good Luck :-)
