Adam,
I have 3 complete machines plus a logic board with similar
symptoms, in one case I was able to resurrect a machine by replacing
the power supply module, but in the 4 other cases the problem lay
with the logic board and probably on of 2 chips, the PMU chip, which
is a low power 68000 series chip and is labeled, and the O'hare IO,
and disc controller which feeds the PMU chip. Currently the only
source for logic board components I know of is salvaged boards, by
the power supply module ought be available on the LEM list.

Roger
Roger, were you ever able to ressurect a machine by a PMU replacement
? I have 3 3500 boards that wont boot, and I really suspect
something in power management.

Re: PowerBook 3400c won't power on

2004-07-14 Thread Tom and Lisa P
A friend of mine has a PowerBook 3400c/180 that she's been using for
the past number of years, however one day it refused to power on.
She had me take a look at it, and I hit the power button (without it
plugged in) and it powered up but no chime and nothing on the
screen. I set it down on a table and plugged it in, and did
command-control power, and it chimed and booted up fine. It
wouldn't let me reset the PRAM, however, and it didn't show the
battery as charging. Then, while it was running I removed the
battery and it immediately shut down. I have since been unable to
get it to boot up again. One thing I've noticed is that the AC
adapter doesn't get warm at all, and the battery doesn't seem to
charge. I'm thinking there's a chance it might be the AC adapter,
so I'm going to bring it to the Apple dealer and have them test it
with a different AC adapter...but if that's not it, any ideas?
Maybe the power manager circuit? And is it worth me trying to fix
it for her (not sure how much a new power manager circuit costs)?
Afterall, it seems that 233Mhz G3's are going for under $200 on eBay
these days.

Thanks for any advice.
-Adam
Does it work on AC if you jiggle the plug a little ? YOu might have
the classic cold-solder-joints-on-the-AC-plug syndrome.

It depends on what your main objective is. If all you are doing is Web
surfing, the best alternative would be to get the Wallstreet and use DSL.
Even a 3400c or a 1400c with an L2 cache would handle DSL with reasonable
alacrity. Your only problem with the 5300 is that it really does lag without
a cache.

I would have to say, though, that even a 5300 with a fast DSL connection
would surf faster than a G4 on 56K, unless you were loading a page with
something like Shockwave or QuickTime content. An uncached 603/100 just
doesn't have the horsepower to do that, DSL or not.

I just erroneously posted --

there's too much memory allocated to each app, when you try to run both,
there can be problems. I'd suggest checking memory allocations to the

might have to experiment with this a bit.>

I should have said "decreasing," not increasing. And clarifying that if
the memory allocations were never changed (since she can't go below the
required amount to run the application), then she should go right to the
RAM Disk suggestion and THEN, perhaps, increasing the memory on the
applications.

Sorry,

FWIW, I have few if any problems with iCab - now. the last version had a
tendency to crash occasionally for me, but 2.9.8 seems stable. It's the
only browser I use on both my PPC'd 520c and my 5300c. The one place
where it isn't working, and Alexander at iCab says will be fixed with the
next release, is logging on to Google's gmail system. Something about a
recursion error.

Obviously everyone's mileage varies--which is why it's so great that we have
so many choices to use. :)

Donna Hood Pointer writes,

Being conversant with both the PB 190 and OS 8.1, here are my thoughts:

1. The problem might be on account of how much memory she has allocated

there's too much memory allocated to each app, when you try to run both,
there can be problems. I'd suggest checking memory allocations to the

might have to experiment with this a bit. I know I've had to, and usually
it works for me. But if these experiments don't work, there's always --

2. With all that RAM she has in there (my own PB 190 only has 4 MB and I
have RAM Doubler on it, so I'm only working with 8 MB RAM), she should be
able to set up a very nice RAM Disk. Ask her to make a RAM Disk (Memory
Control Panel) and put both AOL and Netscape on the RAM Disk. Then open
AOL from the RAM Disk, sign online and open Netscape also from the RAM
Disk. This has worked really well for me. Also note --

3. Even if Stickies is an auto-launch, she can still quit out of it (and
if she wants to, go to the Startup Items folder, I believe, and remove
Stickies to prevent the auto-launch at startup). If she has occasional
use for Stickies otherwise, she can put it in the Apple Menu items for
easy access at her own discretion. It's been awhile since I've had the
need to get rid of auto-launches of apps I don't use that much, but I'm
pretty sure.

4. iCAB, IMNSHO, is unreliable. I've used it on and off for over a year,
on my PB 190, my former 7200/120 and my current G3/233. When it works,
it's wonderful. REALLY wonderful, in fact. When it doesn't, and often it
doesn't, alas, it's awful -- it freezes up the system and it's slow.
Personally I use Netscape first, and only go to the iCAB when I'm having
problems with Netscape (which is a lot less often than iCAB). I think
it'd a good idea for your sister to download iCAB as she can, but to
consider it as a "backup browser" only.

Hope I've helped,

~Yersinia

Don't be at all afraid to ask questions here. A lot of us started at
square one with Mac OS.

As soon as you hear the startup " bong " hold down the shift key.
When the startup screen comes on it will say

PB 190 and AOL

2004-07-14 Thread Donna Hood Pointer
My sister has my old PB190, 40MB RAM, 500MB or 1G HD (I don't remember
which). Running system 8.1. We don't live in the same state, so
anything I help her with is done long distance using my psychic
computer powers. I'm her "expert". It's a long time since I've run
system 8. She has to connect via AOL dial-up. She's using AOL 4 which I
think is the most current version that the 68000 machines can use. The
browser with that version won't do very much with current websites (as
I recall it had a lousy reputation even when it was new). She has
Netscape 4.01 on there also. I suggested she try connecting via AOL and
then opening Netscape and using it instead. But the machine tells her
she doesn't have enough memory. She should have plenty of memory. The
only other app running is Stickies, which I guess is a startup item.
We've tried it with virtual memory on and off. With AOL she has been
running with VM off, since she has plenty of memory. She has
Communicator, not the stand-alone version. Any suggestions? iCab maybe?
More current version of Netscape, but I'm not sure she can go higher
looking on the Netscape site. PB190 is not PPC.

Go into the Control Panels and click on Extensions Manager. Look in the

it's there. That's a thing to do management of HP printers; not
necessary even if you have an HP printer.

Look for a printer script for HP ( probably Hewelet Packard printer
background printing script ) . Do a search ( what OS ? ) with

I am working with 8.0. Sherlock doesn't sound like something I have

OS 8.5 is the oldest I have mounted here. And it's been a long time
since I used 8. Probably Command key and " F " will bring up
search.( Find ) or access it in the file menu. Type in HP
background. this shopuld tell you where it is located ( write down
the path to make it easier to find )
Reboot with extensions off. Or reboot from a CD or floppy.

Open the folder name which you have written down. find the file (
script probably ) and drag it out ( to a storage folder or disk ) or
select it and use the delete key ( if you have no HP printer ).

Now try to reboot to your full OS.

PB 1400 Problems

2004-07-14 Thread Mark Benson

Appologies - this wasn't supposed to be a reply to the Hard Drive thread...

Suggestions please...

A friend of mine had a porblem with his 1400cs. It started out complaining the battery
was flat when it wasn't, then it got tot the stage where it was not accepting power
from the PSU at all, ran the battery flat and died. He metered the main board and the
power cnnector is physically OK. He replaced the PSU with a known good unit and it
still is getting no power. I suspect the Power Manager Unit or (if the 1400 has one)
the sub-board with the battery charging circuit on.

I think he may have replaced the CPU module with a faster 603 one, and upgradsed the
RAM, but that aside I don't think he's done anything nasty apart from using it...

Any ideas? I'm not at all afiliar with this model. I've asked him for some pictures of
the internals, but I suspect the poor thing is toast :(

Look for a printer script for HP ( probably Hewelet Packard printer
background printing script ) . Do a search ( what OS ? ) with
Sherlock
to find HP background. Probably in scripts folder in preferences.
Disable or remove it.

5300cs Won't Wake Up

2004-07-14 Thread Robert S. Rowan
Dear List,
When I put my 5300cs to sleep, it won't wake up and I have to do a
keyboard restart to get it up and running again. I have 40 megs of
RAM for a total of 56 megs of RAM and the OS is 8.1.

I have tried zapping the PRAM x 10, trashing the finder preference
file and rebuilding the desk top. I have run Norton Disk Doctor and
the Doctor says we're fine. I have tried zapping the PRAM again with
Tech Tool 1.2.1. No dice.

Then I thought, perhaps I was having a conflict with an extension or
two so I started up with the extensions off. Shuzbutt! The 5300 still
died in its sleep. I brought out the heavy guns, Conflict Catcher 8,
and still the 5300 fell into the Big Sleep.

OK I thought, I'll subject the PB to intervention therapy, i.e. a
clean install. Aarrugh! (No need to translate).

My last hope, Reset The Power Manager. So I started up the lap top
with the Command, Option, P & R keys depressed and when the 5300 went
blank and the sleep button shown steady, I restarted with the reset
button on the back. OK, one more time. I pulled the battery,
disconnected the AC power pushed the reset button in the back for 30
seconds plus and reconnected the AC power and I am right back where I
started from in the beginning (except for a new system folder).

Does anyone have any other ideas? My next step is to pop the hood and
remove the PRAM battery (how long should it be disconnected?).
Failing all of this, the Power Book gets wrapped in garlic, I drive a
wooden stake through its CPU and I bury it in the back yard!

HP Background question

2004-07-14 Thread D J
Thanks to all for the advice on the mp3 question. I've decided to work on
getting internet access before I work on this. I have a PC Card and am
attempting to run the installer for it but keep getting told that I cannot
install with "HP Background" running. I'm still a newbie with this Mac
stuff. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Re: PowerBook 3400c won't power on

2004-07-14 Thread Volk (contractor)
Adam,
I have 3 complete machines plus a logic board with similar symptoms,
in one case I was able to resurrect a machine by replacing the power
supply module, but in the 4 other cases the problem lay with the logic
board and probably on of 2 chips, the PMU chip, which is a low power
68000 series chip and is labeled, and the O'hare IO, and disc controller
which feeds the PMU chip. Currently the only source for logic board
components I know of is salvaged boards, by the power supply module
ought be available on the LEM list.

hit the power button (without it plugged in) and it powered up but no chime and
nothing on the screen. I set it down on a table and plugged it in, and did
command-control power, and it chimed and booted up fine. It wouldn't let me reset the
PRAM, however, and it didn't show the battery as charging. Then, while it was running
I removed the battery and it immediately shut down. I have since been unable to get
it to boot up again. One thing I've noticed is that the AC adapter doesn't get warm
at all, and the battery doesn't seem to charge. I'm thinking there's a chance it
might be the AC adapter, so I'm going to bring it to the Apple dealer and have them
test it with a different AC adapter...but if that's not it, any ideas? Maybe the
power manager circuit? And is it worth me trying to fix it for her (not sure how much
a new power manager circuit costs)? Afterall, it seems that 233Mhz G3's are going for
under $200 on eBay these days.
Thanks for any advice.
-Adam

Re: Hard Drive in PB1400

2004-07-14 Thread Mark Benson

Suugestions please...

Thanks! I wasn't sure where to start, and I had left the cart at work so
I didn't have the Apple number on it to begin a cross-reference. I
appreciate the help!

Re: Hard Drive in PB1400

2004-07-14 Thread VidaVerde
Not sure about your 1400, but that very model works well in my 3400,
if that's any reassurance.

makes it a lot faster to start up , too!
Ben

My question. Can I put this hard drive in my PB1400? I understand
the the PB1400 can only read 8.5GB so will have to partition the
drive.
