lacking a label, Mac System Profiler and use the combination and

Apple replaced my whole logic board in my iMac (bad firewire port)
under AppleCare and now no serial number or purchase date shows up in
System Profiler. Of course, the number is still physically on or in the
case. So, when I call Apple about this computer I have to get out the
original paperwork to find the info. Since it's not a PB it's not easy
to turn over. Does the serial number show up in system profiler on
these PB's you're looking at? I don't remember if the earlier systems
showed that. i think maybe that started with System 8.

A Kanga looks exactly like a 3400c, except for the PowerBook G3 nameplate
below the screen. In fact, it's the same internally except for three
differences on the logic board--the CPU is a 750 instead of a 603e, the
logic board has 16MB more RAM on it, and the graphics chip is one generation
newer. Basically, what you have is a 3400 with a G3 upgrade installed at the
factory.

I seem to have something wrong with the floppy connector of my 1400c as 2
supposedly good floppy drives completely fail. The cd-rom, however works
fine. I might want to use an internal zip drive in place of the floppy. Can
anyone tell me whether these third party zip drives connect using the
floppy connector, or the cd-rom connector?

Floppy: floppy connector

CD-ROM: EIDE connector

(VST) Zip: EIDE connector

And, if VST made a plug-in hard drive module, as they did for the
Wallsteet and Lombard/Pismo, then that hard drive would also use the EIDE
connector.

Problems with 7.5.

2004-07-29 Thread Steve
Hello,
I appreciate all the people that wrote me saying Apple released 7.5.3
for free on their website, however, I need to get 7.5.3 onto floppies.

Let me explain.
Someone gave me a Powerbook 520c, and the drive has nothing on it. I
need something that allows me to boot and install 7.5.3. The first file
downloaded is an .smi file, looking for the other files. Right now I'm
hoping that a zip disk i'm making will do the trick, however, it would
be nice to have a boot floppy that would allow me to boot and install
an OS.

Any suggestions? If I could find 7.5, which did have a boot image, that
would be the best way, then i can get the powerbook onto my network and
do what I gotta do. :)

Thanks
Steve

but if I make the picture bigger than about 3 inches square, it

is this normal? I thought the whole point of zoomed video was that
even my lowly 3400 could display full-screen.

or do i have a faulty card?

I can also tell you that 7.5.3 comes to two floppies, and 7.5.5 results

Other than having been able to download both of these OS's and make the

Fabian wrote,

and Rob wrote,

7.5.3 on TWO floppies? Wow, that's amazing! My set of floppy disks for
System 7.5.3 consists of FOURTEEN floppies! It's designed to update a
Mac running System 7.5 (which came on 8 floppies) already, and I guess it
handles both the 68K Macs and those with PowerPC processors.

Hm, well, now I'm really bamboozled then. I know it's been a few
months since I downloaded 7.5.3 and 7.5.5 from Apple's site, but to the
best of my knowledge, I downloaded all there was to download of these two
OS's and when I made the floppies (using Disk Copy and Drive Setup at
various different times) I ended up with two for 7.5.3 and three for
7.5.5.

My reason for downloading them was because I had wanted to bring my
Powerbook 190 (a 68K, not a PPC) from OS 7.5.2 to 7.5.5. From what I had
learned both from listers here and from info on the Apple site, this was
a two step process, i.e., go from 7.5.2 to 7.5.3, and then to 7.5.5, so
that's why I took both downloads, and what I always, without fail ended
up with was two floppies for 7.5.3 and three for 7.5.5 regardless of
whether I used Disk Copy or Drive Setup to make them.

But anyway, if the two of you, Fabian and Rob, are now saying that 7.5.3
is nineteen or fourteen floppies, maybe this is why my repeated attempts
at upgrading failed? But then again, even this doesn't make sense to me.
How COULD I have only gotten two floppies from something that's supposed
to yield 14 or 19? Well, OK. I'll go back to the Apple site through the
URL you so kindly included, Fabian.

My PB 190 is STILL running 7.5.2. The reason I ultimately gave up on the
upgrade was because no matter how I made the floppies (see above,
repeated attempts with Disk Copy and Drive Setup, both of which LOOKED
like they were good), 7.5.3 simply wouldn't install and it made no sense
to me. When I have a problem that makes absolutely no sense, and is basic
to the point of a chimpanzee should be able to do it. I mean, really!
MAKING FLOPPIES and executing an INSTALLATION? For crying out loud!
Admittedly 80% or more of what I see on these lists is way over my head,
but never in my life have I had problems making floppies or installing
anything on a Mac capable of running whatever it was. I lose my patience
pretty fast in a situation like this -- it makes no sense. The kinds of
problems that are too technical for me to solve, or too expensive, such
as suggestions to open the computer and_ or buy the newer version
of the software I can easily live with, believe it or not, because I
know what my technical and financial limitations are, and that if/when I
took up those suggestions, the problems would be/have actually been fixed
with suggestions I tried so far, and it DOES make sense. This Powerbook
upgrade business really bugs me because so far it's made no sense, free
is well within my budget, and making floppies/installing things (so I
thought!) are well within my technical abilities.

Yeah why shouls anyone buy an underpowered Mac laptop when they can
have a 3 MHz P4 with that wonderful Windows OS for a lot less ?

For God sake don't portray working class people as Mac users. That
would give people the impression they were as good as their Betters
  ' .

  We can't have that !

please say that you were joking on that one as i find it very offensive!!!

as to me all are equal.

I take it as humor, but if not I would be offended as well.

I am a working-class Mac user with no betters or worsers. I'll never
have the top of the line, but the used BW G3 I finally got recently
pleases me more than any P4 I have worked on for others in my spare time.

In the long list of software from Apple at the link Fabian provided,

Macintosh/System/System_7.5_Update_2.0/Sys_7.5_Update_2.0
-01of14.sea.bin
and so on...

The 14-disk set is for updating OS 7.5 or 7.5.1 or 7.5.2 to OS 7.5.3.
The 19-disk set I wrote about earlier is for installing OS 7.5.3 anew.
