Do you have the latest sofware?
Shreve Systems was selling complete 500 series modem packages (sealed
retail box) for $5, and it included the latest (and the very last)
software from GV.
That base software is "unobtanium" on the 'net, although the updater is
still (or was) on GV's web site.
For $5 you get a spare modem, and a complete and ready to use set of
software diskettes, which don't need updating.
I have the installer disk images sitting on my dotmac site.

streaming Olympics onto 9.1/G3/1400?

2004-08-14 Thread Brian

Anyone got a proxy connection going and viewing some of the Olympic
coverage that's blocked by NBC in the US?

I of course wish them a happy monopoly of coverage but there are some
things that I'd like to watch that they don't spend any time upon.
And since the BBC (among others I guess but the BBC is the only once
I've found) has 4 or 5 live streaming channels, I'd like to be able
to see how well the technology works.

I've tried a couple of anonymous UK proxies, but with IE 5.1 and the
latest RealPlayer for 9.1, I get either no content or sometimes a
neverending install of a VBR update for RealPlayer. Or just a 10
second splash stream for BBC Sport but no actual live content.

To find the links I've been trying, see www.bbc.com and search for
"streaming Olympics".

Thanks for help!
Brian

5xx Modem: only Global Village?

2004-08-14 Thread gf sciacca
While I get the PowerPort software to work fine in a couple of 5xx PBs
with Global Village modem, I have an issue with an -apparently- non GV
modem. I thought GV were the only internal modems for the 5xx series,
but it does not seem to be so.

The Modem Card (beneath the RAM expansion module) has a "Apple
Computers" in-print (as opposed to the Global Village print/sticker) and
at start-up I get a message saying that the "PowerPort software was not
installed because this system is not running an appropriate Global Village
modem". The modem card layout is also different from the GV card and the
540 PB it came from is a German version, bearing at the back no sticker
reporting the kind of modem model installed.

I had (smartly!) ereased the original HD (loaded with a German OS version
of 7.x and where the original software could have been found) as soon
as I got the machine and I'm now left to figure out how to use this modem
card.

Any hints of non Global Village modems for the 5xx?

cheers, gianfranco

check the Modem control panel ane make sure that "Connect via: Internal
Modem" is selected. Other than that you need to make sure that the
PowerPort software is there. If your modem is not a Goblal
Village/PowerPort, pease report it to me!! (see separate thread)

Is the PowerPort software installed and correctly loaded? If the software
is there and does not detect a valid modem, you get a warning at startup.
If the software is not there, you are in the desert... Check if the
PowerPort control panel is there.

No its an older USB burner its USB 1.1.

I use it on my Bondi and Blueberry iMacs they are both
USB 1.1 besides it works as an external drive through
the cardbus usb card already,

I just can't get my version of Toast (4.2 Deluxe) to
work with it and I didn't want to spend the money on a
newer version if someone else had tried and no version
of Toast will work at all.

Though I am tossing around the idea of trying to put
10.1.5 on there and see if it will burn with OSX's
native burning capabilities. I've heard that X is
horrendous on a 3400 but figured I could deal with it
long enough to burn a cd if necessary then reboot into
9.1.

Re: 3400 and USB question

2004-08-14 Thread VidaVerde
I suspect that it needs USB2 and you get USB1 on your 3400.
Ben
Ok I finally tried shaving a cardbus usb card (Macally
Part #UH276) and it works great.

I couldn't get that USB 1.4.1 update to load directly
onto the machine so I loaded it on another computer
with 9.2.2 then just grabbed the extensions and pulled
them over to the 3400, rebooted and I've got USB.
So far my USB Smart Media adapter works in it so I can
dump my digital camera directly onto it. Also my 128
Meg Thumb Drive works as well. The only thing that I
can't seem to get to work is my Iomega ZipCD/650.
I've got Toast 4.2 Deluxe that is a left over from an
old now long dead SCSI burner I used to have. The
Iomega is usually hooked up to my iMac/350 and I just
use X's built in burning for that but I'd like the
ability to burn directly from the 3400 at times.
When I tried using my version of Toast on the 3400 it
wouldn't recognize the drive, though cd's, cdr's and
cdrw's that are put in it while its hooked up mount
and are usable by the computer.
Basically my question is has anyone else managed to
get a usb cd burner to work with a 3400?
I don't want to buy a newer version of Toast if its
not going to help. I've got one of those SCSI
adapters for my powerbook so I suppose I could just
pick up a SCSI burner on eBay but I'd rather be able
to use what I've already got.

520 PowerPort

2004-08-14 Thread R. A. Cantrell
Bookies,
Can anybody tell me what it is I need to make a PowerPort
Mercury A540 for the 5xx books go? I'm pretty sure it is something I don't
have other than the modem init or Modem Description, but I may be wrong. I
have gotten the PPP and FreePPP dialers to get right down to dialing, but
they can't find the modem, I don't think. They keep on trying to initialize
the serial port.

Re: Powerbook 170 (installing software)

2004-08-14 Thread Beniamino Cenci Goga
Once you have mastered the "PC-->floppy-->Mac thing" and your 170 is
up and running I suggest that you find an HD30-SCSI cable to connect
you PB to an external SCSI HD. Then with Access PC or similar
software you can mount on the desktop any DOS formatted HD.

PS. System 7.5 is fine with the 170, but 4 MB are really not enough.

Re: Powerbook 170 (installing software)

2004-08-14 Thread Erwin W.
Dear Colin,
System 7.5.3 and system 7.5.5 both recognize DOS disks, that would make
things a bit more
simple (transfer of files) but in the meanwhile you could use Transmac.

You need Stuffit 4 first, with which you will be able to unstuff version 5.
My experience is that with both versions 4 and 5 you will be able to
decompress
or unstuff :-) all the files that can be downloaded on the net.

I can send you a little freeware utility with which a Win or Dos user can
make a Mac disk
On that disk you will find (put the disk in your powerbook!) version 4 of
the Stuffit
Expander (Maybe this sounds complicated and I guess I'm jumping a few steps
:-) but
the utility I can send you is a 'MakeDisk' program. It not only creates a
Mac disk, but it puts
a couple of programs for the Mac on it).
I will also send you the free stuffit 5, which you can unstuff with the
version 4 that has been
installed on your PB.

Then you will have to transfer the files you downloaded from the net to Mac
compatible disks
with Transmac.

If you found the programs & files I mentioned in this mail, no problem. If
you didn't, contact
me off-list and I will send them to you. They are all freeware anyway.

You could also consider upgrading to System 7.5.3 and to 7.5.5. Apple has
made these
OS's available for free! You can download them at their server, create the
19 disks with your PC
and install everything on your powerbook.
I can help you with this operation, since I did it myself a couple of weeks
ago on my
Powerbook Duo 230.
On the other hand, you should first figure out out if 7.5.5 runs on a 170.
I have no idea, since I'm quite new to the Mac world (and by the way: adore
it)
I can give you the exact URL where to find the free Mac System 7.5

Best,
Erwin
