It can be done with early versions.

To install? A nightmare.

To run? Armageddon. This is the slowest PowerBook that can actually run
OSX.

Don't do it. DON'T Nothing useful can be gained, period. You can't
run most new software (since most requires 10.2) and so your left with a
shabby version of the OS with shabbily thrown together software.

OSX on 3400c?

2004-09-23 Thread Mac
Hi,

What's the consensus (if that is possible) on
upgrading a PB3400c to OSX? A total nightmare or
doable? How much RAM in necessary? Is there a how-to
FAQ anywhere?

Thanks

Re: USB on a 3400c possible?

2004-09-23 Thread VidaVerde
yes, very simple. We really need a FAQ. . .
install the SW - you'll need tomeviewer or suchlike to steal it from
the 9.1 cd (i think, or wherever)

then buy any usb card
file (with a file) the plastic "I'm a non-3400 type card" key off one
side so it looks like the edge of your modem card (or any card that
DOES fit) - its about 1mm x 4mm x 2mm that you're removing.

It should fit all the way in now

reboot
put card in (AFTER BOOTING)
there y'are.. . . USB
BUT you haveto ejectthe card before shutting down (or you can't
insert it AFTER booting next time if you see what I mean)

For 8.6, it may be worth trying http://www.wamcom.org/latest-131/ -
it's basically mozilla kept up to date for classic mac OS.

I couldn't find a version of mozilla that would work with 8.1--maybe I
missed it, but everything I saw on mozilla's website (and when I googled
mozilla 8.1) seemed to point to only use with a later OS.

Like I said, go to ftp.mozilla.org, start with 1.2.1 or earlier (and I
doubt 1.2.1 will work, pick something earlier), and start trying
versions out against gmail.

I'd happily test for you, but- I cannot, I have nothing pre-9.1 any
longer.

I suspect Mozilla is the only hope, and I don't have much hope for it-
and it seems like Howard has tried everything else. Howard, you
indicated I'd see that Mozilla would not work when I skimmed the
thread- but I saw nothing about Mozilla that you tried, only Opera. I
must have missed it. Yes they are based on the same original source (I
think, I lost track of who comes from where and their site doesn't say
easily), but they are tweeked sources. Opera/Mozilla: they are not the
same. Did you really try the old Mozilla binaries?
