Re: Cable Modem on a 3400?

Versions of the Mac OS prior to 9.1 have dhcp lease retention
difficulties across sleeps. Then they fail to renew the lease when
the computer wakes up. So sometimes a reboot is required...

Also please define "no longer access the internet". That's a vague
term that doesn't tell us if you forgot to open the garage door or if
there's a massive pothole just beyond your driveway. :)

Are you saying your web browser gives you some error? Or are you
saying some lower level network function failed -- Unable to obtain a
valid DHCP lease? Unable to ping your local head-end (gateway) or
any point beyond? Unable to translate domain names to IP addresses?
etc

Adelphia, the Cable company in my area, said that my ethernet had gone out on
the 3400c. I would like to know if someone could tell me how to find out if
this is true or not.
A hardware failure is always possible, I guess. But there are a lot
of software causes that should be investigated first.

A quick test... Plug the PowerBook into the cable modem. Power-cycle
the modem. After it has sync'd to the cable system (all lights solid
green), boot the PowerBook. Now turn on AppleTalk over that ethernet
interface. AppleTalk is very picky. If the hardware doesn't sense
(and report) all the proper continuity signals, AppleTalk will fail
to initialize.

I am using Adelphia's Cable Modem with my Beige G3 and it is working fine.
For how many computers (IP addresses) is your account authorized? If
only one, then you'll need to power-cycle the modem each time you
switch between computers.

...Cable modems are told by the cable company how many devices
(computers) to talk to. They remember those devices by tracking
their ethernet (MAC) addresses. The only way to make the modem
forget them is to power-cycle it -- physically unplug it and leave it
unpowered for at least 30 seconds.

You will find the same sizes in 500s, excepting for a few in the 500 MB
and 1000 MB size from Apple, and perhaps a few in the 1,300 MB size from
third parties.

Although 750 MB and 1000 MB SCSI drives were planned by IBM and Toshiba,
very few were ever made, and very likely none ever got into a 500.

Rather, Apple "converted" larger EIDE drives to SCSI using a device made
by ADTX. This device is still in Drive Setup's table of supported devices.

The ADTX converter has a 8GB limitation which cannot be overcome.

Best bet is look for 1000 MB and 1,300 MB drives which arestated to have
come from 500s, buy one of those, and then install an up to 8 GB drive on
that converter.

But, there will be some mechanical issues, because the drive mounting
points changed at the same time as the introduction of the larger
capacity drives.

500-series HD

2004-10-01 Thread martin
I just acquired an old 170 and a 160. Both have original 40MB SCSI
HDs, too small to be useful if I hope to keep them. Sadly, old SCSI
PB drives in the 250-500 MB range seem to have all gone to landfills:
I can't find any around here.

Before I wade into the murky depths of eBay, any suggestions or
pointers for me? I spose I'm looking for a HD out of an old 5xx or
Duo (cuz hardly anyone else would have made SCSI HDs around that
size).

Any hints appreciated.

I've discovered that I can use the Airport control program on my OSX

Be sure to check out the Java utilities that let you configure the ABS.
With MRJ 2.1.1,and above, they will work on OS 8 or above.
I am at work so I don't have access to all my links, but you should be

I wonder, are you going to try an put you 540 on Wireless??
I may. Allegedly my card is supported on the 68k 540c, but I was never
able to get it to work. The tech at proxim suggested I try a firmware
upgrade on my card (A Lucent Silver) which I finally got around to last
week in an unsuccessful attempt to get it working on a PC through our
Cisco WAPs here in the college. (a weird problem that I think resides
in the Cisco boxes, not my system, since it associates properly,
authenticates properly, but the Cisco is not passing along the DHCP
request for some reason, and so it isn't getting an IP address. It's
something on the cisco because when we were testing them it did work)

computer needed:

No price noted at this time.
Thanks!
Neat, I'll keep an eye on that.
In my experience, Axis cams dominate that field, they've been doing
linux-based all-in-one cams for ages. Linksys will be an interesting
entering player. Depends on their price point, how much performance I
expect.

I've quit recommending their routers though- my BEFSR41 is a little
flaky under load. I noticed it more when I switched to sftp and
ssh-only on my unix box- the Linksys router would drop bits in the
headers randomly and secure sessions would thus abort as the MAC
address header would be missing a byte once in a while.

That's the easy part. Not solder city. Pull the
keyboard (3 grey screws on the bottom). Pull the
front grill (1 silver screw). Pull the green battery
off it's sticky tape under the grill. Unplug it's
connector. Reverse to install the new battery.

Pretty sure my original is dead or dying.
