Re: Help! OS 8.6
I've managed to get the 'book, after 6 hours of work, to now boot off of the CF startup unit, but I can't get it to work properly from the hard drive. Doing a clean install from 8.1 fails, as does upgrading, or even just dragging the system folder from the CF to the HD and going from there. Someone emailed me that I may have to wipe the drive and start over--I may have to do that, but I'm waiting on a large external SCSI HD--can't back up on something you don't have. :) Later.Howard Computer n. new to list
Hello. I am the new owner of a (free) PB 520c. It came without any cords, etc, but after fetching an AC adapter I was surprised to find it powers up and into OS 7.6.1. Unfortunately it is devoid of an Applications folder, so no apps yet. My ambitions are modest - I don't need a new processor or probably even PCMCIA support. If I can get it to word process and communicate with my G4 iMac, that's great. If I can connect to, browse, and send email via internet it would be a pleasant surprise. I don't want to spend much if any money. Questions: Should I stick with system 7.6.1? Is it easy to connect to Broadband? What do I need - a twisted pair receiver, but any programs or protocol, etc? Remember, I'm an OSX native. Where can I get good Apps, for free or real cheap? Thanks all! Erich Z Ypsi Michigan -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Connecting with your G4 is easy Powerbook to G4; simply install Appleshare client 3.8 http://tinyurl.com/6vcp3 (Apple's web site) and enter the ip address of the G4 in the chooser. To mount folders on the powerbook form the G4 you'll need to install ShareWay IP. This is costly, and since you can mount the G4 from the PB not really needed. Depending on how unixy you are with OS X, you'll want a SSH client for the 530; I use Nifty Telnet SSH http://www.lysator.liu.se/~jonasw/freeware/niftyssh/ I routinely run MacDraw and MacWrite on my 540, Graphics Converter, bunch of stuff. The key, though, is memory, and unfortunately it costs: a 32 Meg upgrade is $79 at Data Memory Systems. But that gets you 36 megs total, which is enough to do quite a bit. I would strongly recommend you find a copy of RamDoubler for that machine, regardless of how much memory you end up putting in it--and if you can find one (and they do show up on ebay occasionally--2.5 SCSI notebook drives), a larger HD for the machine. Having used a 520c for several years before graduating to the 5300 I'm currently using, I can tell you that it's a nice little powerbook, even if it is a bit slow for things like web browsing. (a zen-like patience will make things easier to deal with there. :) ) For telnet, I like BetterTelnet which can be found at http://www.cstone.net/~rbraun/mac/telnet Later.Howard Computer n.
