I'd like to know too. Mine does it, but it will fix itself if I pinch
the sides of the screen. Just smack it around a bit! Hehehe. Usually
the sign of a loose connection.

That sounds like the connector to the screen itself was wiggled loose. You
may need to take the screen plastics apart to insure a good connection, but
the problem _is certainly_ in the connection or wiring. It can be fixed,
just with a little (O.K., maybe a lot of) effort.

If you need help with this, there are several knowledgeable people here who
have the web addresses and instructions you may need. I put it this way

Actually, it did about a month ago. The plate the covers up the microphone
broke off and I had someone put epoxy on it. Would this make it harder to
fix? It's starting to crack, so it would probably be easy for me to get it
apart if I needed to. I got the lines to go away by pinching the edges of
the screen.

New 190cs troubles

2005-04-23 Thread Ge'
Hi John,
Screen reset: I'm not sure what happened there...! My 'tip' was just a
shot in the dark. E.g., Command-Backspace to trash a file doesn't work
on OS 7.6 or earlier.
If you trashed something else, and hopefully didn't empty the Trash
since, you can put it back by opening the Trash folder on the desktop,
selecting the file(s) by clicking once, and choose "Put Away" from the
File menu.
If you trashed the correct file, it has already been re-created
automatically: It's a small file that stores the screen settings when
the computer is off. Because it was not there when you restarted, the
OS created it anew, filling it with default values, and that is what set
the screen brightness to an average level.
For the 7.5.3 update: I'm not sure if the update will work with files on
your harddisk. At the very least, you'll have to change the filetype of
the installer program to "APPL", which can be done with many file
utilities. I'll delve in my archive if you need one.
Good luck,
Ge'

Absolutely. The only way to _positively_ fix it is to check the
conductivity of the screen's film wire (flat wire ?) with a voltmeter. That
is, each wire on the film. You might also check that the tiny prongs on the
board terminal are straight and the connection is well seated and locked in
tight by the little tabs on the sides of the mobo connector.

The above is from my own experience, me loving to take things apart!

John, I have to ask, Did you take your 'Book apart recently or did it suffer
a hit?

Sincerely yours, Grizzlygiant

Hard drive question again (was defragmenter)

2005-04-23 Thread Ge'
Great to get help from all sides!
Howard sent me a shareware program: FastUnfrag, size: unbelievable 12k,
which works nicely and tells me that I have only 1% fragmentation.
Which means that the problem with the slow startup is not caused by
fragmentation...
Re. what Bill wrote about defragmentation and OS 8: Yes, be careful
there. IIRC, up to OS 8.0 the file system was HFS. Then came the quite
different HFS+, which makes older defragmenting programs (and disk tools
in general) potentially dangerous on disks that have been used with OS
8.1 or newer.
That said, I'm still looking if anyone can give me a good hint about my
PB's slow startup.
The suggestion with the servers list sounded good--if only I could find
that file or folder. On the other hand, I never log on to servers, but
only use the network for connecting to the internet--would that generate
a list of server names, too?
Any ideas welcome!
Ge'
