Re: More on my PB 190cs

2005-05-05 Thread Ge'
I think acknowledging that we know only a small part of reality is a
sign of strength. The more we understand how little we know, the closer
we get to world peace, that's my conviction.
But let me write a bit more on this MB:
You know that all things computer are based on bits, and therefore,
everything is counted in powers of 2. These days, even street kids with
MP3 players think in numbers like 64, 128, 256, and 512.
It's a mere coincidence that 2^10, or 1024, is so close to 1000. The
closeness of these two numbers is the reason that people have started to
call 1024 bytes a 'kilobyte', which literally means '1000 bytes'. And
this is basically the discrepancy you have re-discovered.
With 1k, the difference is tiny, but moving to MB and GB it'll be
getting bigger; with Terabytes, it'll be 10%, so maybe then more people
will start to notice.

Re: More on my PB 190cs

2005-05-05 Thread vicki Duggan
I think that I should pipe in here because I think if you are going to use
the old hard ware on a daily basis then good for you. I still own a duo and
use it for text docs on my home network and print to an old laser-writer. I
also have an old classic hooked to a apple-one BW scanner and on to the
laser-writer.

When considering a computer you need to think what you are going to do with
it and use it before you buy it.

The 190 is a very nice old-world Mac and through the use of ide hdd and wifi
cards also flash ram memory cards CAN be used on a daily basis, for email
and docs also the myriad of 68k games that are out and about. So if you are
happy with the 190 keep it working.

I use a g4 ibook for daily mail and so on and if I want to do something
that needs screen size and loads of memory I use my G4 sawtooth, but still
like to get the duo out and use it because it is very easy on the eye with
the mono screen, If I had a 190 I would use that in-place of the duo. And I
am always looking for old books to do up and give to family and friends.

Initializing SCSI Disk in PB 145

2005-05-05 Thread Jeffrey Bergier
I have a powerbook 145 and I wanted to do a clean install.
So I started into the Disk Tools floppy for System 7.1 and stupidly
selected Apple HD SC Setup instead of just Erase Disk from the Special
Menu and in the middle of initialization it gave me an Error This
Disk Cannot Be Initialized. So now the disk is uninitialized and I
can't figure out how to get it initialized again. Does anyone have
any suggestions?

From eBay my first OS 9 disk was a Powerbook install disk that wants
to see a G3 in the hardware configuration. Since my PCI Mac at that
time was a 604 the installer of course balked.

Some listers suggested TomeView to extract all of the OS files for
manual installation.
I was not at all confident of getting it right and it also sounded
like a lot of work .

So I eventually got an iMac 9.1 install disk. Surprisingly this will
install to everything it has been tried on.. Why it doenn't demand a
G3 I don't know.
But am thankful. I love 9.1.

OWC sells these very reasonably. ( just a plug)
Tomeview is probably a free download if you want to go that route.

I wish it was something as easy as that. I know that this will run. I had OS
9.1 on the machine, and before that I had 8.6 and even had 8.0 on it before
that. I want to put 8.5 on it so I can take advantage of the extended HFS.

Now it won't take any of them. I have even tried removing anything extra and
tried different HD drivers including FWB.

Program will not run to install it. I don't know if you noticed it or not
but 8.5 has a goofed up manual install. It won't do it. You have to do it
through the install program.

This should not be this hard.

Hope you want a challenge? This is it.

It is actually a 68 pin drive with a converter to 50 pin. It is not new, but
everything else works. I can install a program and run it on the drive. I
did drag over 8.0 and boot off of it.

I thought it might be the disk but I have cleaned it and I have tried
running other install programs from other OS (8.0, 9.1). They will not run
either.

I have done the equivalent of the cuda switch. This computer does not have
one. I even had a different drive that I was able to connect to the computer
and I thought I could install it onto that one and then drag it over to the
installed one. No go. Nova. Nada.

Connections on everything are good and tight. The computer does not show
other signs of a problem. The fact that I can run programs on it says that
the computer is working.

Any other thoughts?

Driving Miss Crazy,

Dave

I did connect the other SCSI drive I have to the machine. It works as well.

___
Termination needs to be at the end of the chain. From the factory
Termination is set at the CD drive at ID = 3 This becomes the
dependable end of the chain.

Now , the machine will still run with drives beyond this but signals
can act funny. And the chain can be unstable.

Set your drive ID to 0 or 1 or 2 with the jumper pins. Look on drive
manufacturers website or a drive reference website for details.

You started swapping stuff around and things got wonky. After being
dependable for years.

After changing ID and resetting everything use disk setup or SCSI
probe to make sure ID is below that set for the CD drive.

This is not a hard task at all. You could even just move the jumper
clip to the other end of the block and try it. You are sure to get
lucky sometime even without referring to a spec sheet.

Go for it !

Would the HD work if the converter was toast?

Possibly
Also plug and unplug cable at board end and drive end a dozen times
.Converter connectors to ( that makes three connections to do this to
) This should scratch through any tobacco smoke or other dirt
film that can invade any connector in a computer. All it takes is one
dirty pin connection to futz up a circuit.

The only tool of which I'm aware to directly convert HFS to HFS+ is
PlusMaker (from Alsoft IIRC.) Works a treat, quickly and reliably
transforms a volume from HFS to HFS+, without the need to reinitialize
the volume or backup and reinstall your data.

Dunno where or even if you'll be able to buy a copy of it, but it's
probably out there to DL as warez . . . somewhere . . .

Is there a way to create a partition on the fly in OS X? Maybe if I could
install OS 8.5 onto a partition then drag and drop it onto a CD and burn it
like that.

Would that work and how would I partition the HD?

I've got the room.

Thanks that helped, but sometimes when I boot from the OS 8 CD the

How old is this diak and could it be on it's last legs?

Connections on drive and cable clean (very) and tight on both ends?
 all pins and holes?

A toothbrush and contact cleaner may help.

Other recent hardware changes? Push and hold the CUDA.

This problem is either way too obvious or way to mysterious.
And I don't know which.
It solution will be the last thing try on it !

Can you SCSI disk mode or ethernet to another Mac temporarily to

backup the whole drive?

To switch format to HFS+ the drive has to be initialized IIRC.

Alsoft has a utility called PlusMaker which will make HFS volumes into HFS+
(using an external boot disk) without your having to reformat. I've used it
successfully, but I recommend following their warning to back up your data
anyway, just in case.

Alsoft makes a nifty little $30 utility called PlusMaker which can
convert your drive without reformatting. I've used it on several drives.

http://www.alsoft.com/PlusMaker/index.html

However, while I've never had a problem with PlusMaker, be sure to backup
your important files -- just in case -- before converting the drive!
