Re: Hard drive makes whining noise

2005-08-20 Thread John Perkins Jr.
I noticed it about a month after I got the computer (in March). I've
used other PowerBook 500s before and they didn't make that noise as
far as I know.

No this isn't normal, and, yes, it could be a sign the drive is
dying. Make sure you have a backup of your stuff.

Some drives are simply noisier than others but if this is something
that has developed recently, that's not good.

Make sure your sonic environment hasn't changed and you're simply
hearing it for the first time, too. That happened to use here when we
retired a particularly noisy server. all of a sudden we were hearing
 all sorts of 'new' noises.

Re: Hard drive makes whining noise

2005-08-20 Thread Tom Lee
Onset of whining is often a sign that the spindle motor bearings are
starting to wear out. They're sealed with lifetime lubrication at the
factory. By this they mean that life ends when the lubrication wears out.

Over time, the bearing friction will increase to the point where the
drive runs very hot, or where the motor torque just can't maintain the
proper speed.

That said, I've run noisy drives for a very long time, so they can
apparently run for months or years, happily if noisily. Still, you may
wish to increase the frequency with which you make backups, just in case. :)

Tom

Re: Intelligent Battery

2005-08-20 Thread ric
Try launching IBR with the right battery slot empty. When promted
insert a batt.
in the right slot. You should then see Extended Precharge. It may
take 10-15 min.
but after that it should at least show up in the control strip. If it
doesn't work the

first time -TRY AGAIN-
Rick

I was wondering if there was any other way to charge the 500 series
intelligent batteries without having them in the computer and without
a fancy external charger. My batteries are so dead that the computer
won't even recognize them, and I am hoping that I can get enough power
to them to get the computer to recognize them and I could use EMMpathy
or LIND Battery Utilities to fix them.

P.S. Intelligent Battery Recondition recognizes the batteries but says
they can't be fixed.
P.P.S. My floppy drive is broken so I can't put any new software on it.

1400 PC-Card Slot Busted

2005-08-20 Thread Noah Wood
Hello fellow Power Bookers! I have a little problem, my 1400's top
PC-Card slot broke when I force-ejected a card from it. I opened up
the keyboard and took a look, and it seems on the edge close to the
Hard Drive there is a piece of the metal that keeps the card in place
jammed into one of the prongs and it is bent, this is fixable in the
short run? I tried to take a small screwdriver and bend it back but
that didn't help.
