The driver should be on the Asante site. Try sticking a "dumb hub"
between the modem and the Asante device.

Asante Mini EN/SC driver

2005-08-25 Thread Kenneth Smith
Howdy.

I have a PowerBook 180 that works great for me except for the screen and
batteries (of course). While the screen has those black horizontal lines on
the left side indicating dead pixels, it is tolerable. My present task is
to 1) get my Asante Mini EN/SC SCSI to Ethernet device working and I need, I
think, the proper driver for it since the Asante EN/SC driver isn't working
(trying to get it to access my ADSL line through my Westell DSL modem) but I
cannot get a connection. The Ethernet light doesn't come on, and the lights
indicate that the device is periodically negotiating the connection but the
Ethernet light is never sustained as on and working; 2) I need a place to
purchase (or even make, perhaps) a suitable battery to plug into the sides
of the PowerBook.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Which flavour of Unix/Linux used most OR run better on older model Powerbooks?

2005-08-25 Thread Manfred
Hello,

Debian works best on the 3400c. Depending on the chipset the
wireless lan works fine. My Lucent card does.
Besides, on a Kanga Yellow Dog works best. But only one
of the older releases.

There is even a software package for powerbooks making all
buttons work (brigthness, loudness) and shows them onscreen
like on MacOS. Battery works longer then with MacOS :)
Sound works fine of course. battery and power status are
recogniced. Works fine. Sleep works, closing lid works.

CD rom works, but on my drive i can not get audio
working. I read somewhere this depends on the drive
you have.

Cause Unix is a 3 button OS, it is possible to map
the missing buttons onto the last two F keys.

The grapic drivers for X are not as good as those
from MacOS. Fast enough for everthing but to view
a movie. Firefox is usable.

It is a little tricky to get the right kernel, but then
it works flawless. The problem is, you boot the kernel
from MacOS and therefore you need the right one from start.
Depending on your keyboard you need to configure your X
to have all keys.

So, dont do it until you have the patience to figure
everything out :) I have a howto online, but its german.
Let me know if you need some informations, then i ll try
to translate it.

I needed a Unix back when i did this for network debugging
with customers. But to be true, its better to have a MacOS
on it and switch to a small intel based notebook for Unix ;)
Not everything is ported to PPC and some software does
not compile on the PPC. There is a ssh for Mac and even
some network tools for ping, traceroute and so on.

Today i use a IBM T20 700 MHz with a FreeBSD current.
Its small and just perfect with FreeBSD.

Which flavour of Unix/Linux used most OR run better on older model Powerbooks?

2005-08-25 Thread Sorular

G'day

I have a powerbook 3400c that I use quite often for simple tasks like
text / email even some simple browsing etc... It's maxed out Ram and
very good battery (1+ hours) with 2gb hdd.
I recently bought and start using Avaya wireless and it just gave a
whole new enjoyment to it...

However, I am now curious, whether I could switch to one of those
Unix/Linux flavors out there that can be installed and run on pb3400c (I
think DebianPPC, NetBSD are to name but few...)

How many people out there has actually tried any of these unix/linux on
pb3400? Can wireless be still working? and which flavor of linux/unix is
better suited to pb?

cheers

I have 8.1 on my PowerBook right now so 8.x would make it easy to
adjust to a new PowerBook.

I hate the keyboard on my 520. It is hard to type on. Do the 165c and
180c have keyboards like that?

The 1400cs screen is satisfactory but after using the 1400c you notice
a difference.

I don't know the 520, but my 180c has a tiny keyboard which I don't
care for. And as everyone said, the 1400 keyboard is as good as it
gets on old Powerbooks.

I would suggest the 1400c, but if the funds are limited get the
1400cs. The 2400 is hard to find and sells for as much a a G3 PB so
why bother. even if you can find one. Unless you want to collect
PB's the 2400 sells outrageously high and is not worth the cost
compared to other models
with more features.

The 1400c will definitely cost more than the 1400cs unless you get lucky.

Re: Hard drive makes whining noise

2005-08-25 Thread Naftali Shani
John, regardless if the PB was on or not, hard drives in general don't like
being dropped.
Had the PB been powered and dropped, you probably would have damaged the head/s
and plate/s (it can survive gentle acceleration of <<1 g, but a drop shock is
hard acceleration >>1 g). As it wasn't powered, only the bearing/s or other
mounting hardware may have seen the damage. It's hard to tell what was damaged
until you take it apart and measure.

Install 7.6 on Powerbook 3400 doesnt work

2005-08-25 Thread Paxson

Hi @ll,

I'm desperatly trying to install MacOS 7.6 on my old powerbook 3400 (144MB
RAM/2GB/12xCD)..

At the moment there are 3 Partitions (all ~700 MB). One of the partions ist
hfs+ with an installed MacOS 8.6 which is working fine and stable all the
time!!!

Now I am trying to install MacOS 7.6 on one partition (which is HFS, *not*
HFS+)...but I can't get it to work!!...I even went and got an original MacOS
7.6-Install-CD, that was specifically from an Powerbook 3400...But I still
can't get it to work.

When I try to boot of the CD or try open the Installer (within the 8.6), I
just get a message like "this software was not made for this
computer...bla,bla,bla..".

I even tried and swapped MachID (with MachID-Wanna-Be Control Panel), but
that still doesn't work. I also tried to apply the specific 7.6.1-Update
especially for the 3400's (after faking the MacID and installing 7.6 and the
immediatly installing the 3400-7.6.1-Update...

Can anybody help ?! Anybody have a hint ?!

Puzzled
