Re: 1400 W/ FLASH DRIVE!

2005-09-06 Thread Chris Pagan
I've got my pb maxed out at 64mb. it's snappy. i just
wanted to see if there was a way to have the virtual
mem someplace else other than the primary HDD. 2 disks
are better than one. i was just wondering if the the
transfer rate and seek time is faster or slower than
that of the standard 2gig HDD that came with the
PB1400c. we all know that the 2 main bottlenecks with
the 1400 are the mem and the hdd.

You can also have Windows computers read Mac Disks with software
called HFVExplorer. It can be found here:

Compact Flash would be great for another "Hard Drive" but at this
point a waste of money if you ask me. If you use the Memory stick as
a RAM Disk and get them system to at least 32MB of "Real RAM" It would
be fast enough. CF is a little faster, but much more expensive.

1400 W/ FLASH DRIVE!

2005-09-06 Thread Chris Pagan
Hey guys,
 first post.
I have been working hard to get my old 1400c up to
snuff. I've maxed out the mem, bought a wireless card
for it, installed a fresh copy of 8.6. I'm to the last
step before upgrading the cpu. The HDD! I know that i
can boot 7.6.1 off of a sony mem stick and use if for
virtual memory and internet cache but should i use
it for everyday use. I think( and if someone could
help with this part) that CF cards are faster than
sony mem sticks. If so then i could use one of the
2gig cards to hold everything for me.

thanks,
chris

Hi What you need to do is find a good 1400 that has a 12x or 8 x
cdrom and then swap the internal unit in the drive caddy the
interface type is what you need to look at? just out of interest i
took the internal drive from a firelite external cdrw drive that
came with a G4 powerbook first revision. and that had the just swap
over interface Luckily. also you will need a copy of toast that runs
well on the 1400 (toast 5 le works fine under os 8.6 or 9.) I think i
have a cd with 5 le on somewhere i will have a look.

Also, can you make copies of PC CDs
with a Mac?

With toast you can there is an option for it under the toast options.

You can get an external SCSI CD-RW and most should work fine using an
early version of Adaptec Toast. You will also need the SCSI cable for
Powerbooks which is easy to find. Yamaha made some nice SCSI burners.

You should be able to make copies of CD's using Toast, but I've never
tried making copies of anything but Mac format using early versions of
Toast. I know the later versions of Toast can burn in many formats.
