Re: Installing OS on 1400c
Good result today, a CF adapter I'd won on eBay turned up. I now have a 64MB card to use as VM for the 1400 Problem is, every time I try to use it the control panel suggests that there is not enough room. When I use 'Get Info' on the card it reports as having 62MB available What gives? ian, i too have had troubles using mem cards as VM. i'm using a SD 128mb card. it works ok until i let my 1400, 166 go to sleep. it has a hard time waking up. the issue you are having w/the card is that it's formatted. try lowering the VM to 60mb if it will let you. if not then you will have to find a larger CF card. c __ Yahoo! for Good Donate to the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. http://store.yahoo.com/redcross-donate3/ -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Hard drive makes whining noise
i've been able to get almost any drive i stuffed into my 1400 to work. Just make sure it fits. I had a heck of a time getting one of those newer low profile drives to connect to the internal cable. the only thing you might have to do is partition the drive into smaller partitions if it is a large drive. i think there is an 8 gig limit to the 1400. give it a shot. c --- John Perkins Jr. [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Would a Seagate Medalist Pro 2520 (ST52520A) work? -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... i've had that issue before. my problem was one of the pins on the adapter kept getting pushed in. i ended up cutting my losses and buying another adapter. --- Spencer Carter [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I have a SCSI Zip drive and an external HD that sometimes my PB 1400 can see and sometimes can't. i'm not sure of the space available in the 520, but in the 1400 it prolly would not fit. apple designed the case to use up every inch of space. c --- John Perkins Jr. [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Would 3.5 drives work, though? -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I've used an old philips 2X scsi external burner with toast 3.x. With an externial LaCie CD/rw, 8/8/24, the best I was ever able to record was 2 speed. That was with Toast Deluxe v4. This past weekend, I set up the PB1400 and a Wallstreet on a wireless network, and transferred about 2gb of files off the 1400 and then burned them on the Wallstreet using a VST 8/8/24 speed firewire burner. The file transfer took about an hour (while I did something else) and about 30 minutes to burn the files to three cd. This was faster than burning them on the 1400. You can find a 4 or 8 speed burner for very low cost on ebay. Ken Vann -- == Old Mac's have new uses with WiFi. 1400 W/ FLASH DRIVE!
Hey guys, first post. I have been working hard to get my old 1400c up to snuff. I've maxed out the mem, bought a wireless card for it, installed a fresh copy of 8.6. I'm to the last step before upgrading the cpu. The HDD! I know that i can boot 7.6.1 off of a sony mem stick and use if for virtual memory and internet cache but should i use it for everyday use. I think( and if someone could help with this part) that CF cards are faster than sony mem sticks. If so then i could use one of the 2gig cards to hold everything for me. thanks, chris __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Re: 1400 W/ FLASH DRIVE!
I've got my pb maxed out at 64mb. it's snappy. i just wanted to see if there was a way to have the virtual mem someplace else other than the primary HDD. 2 disks are better than one. i was just wondering if the the transfer rate and seek time is faster or slower than that of the standard 2gig HDD that came with the PB1400c. we all know that the 2 main bottlenecks with the 1400 are the mem and the hdd. --- Noah Wood [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Compact Flash would be great for another Hard Drive but at this point a waste of money if you ask me. If you use the Memory stick as a RAM Disk and get them system to at least 32MB of Real RAM It would be fast enough. CF is a little faster, but much more expensive.
