Well, I'm very thankful to this list. Shortly after the last thread on this
topic came up a couple of weeks ago I finally heard the 'snap of doom' from
my display. It had been loose, and I knew it was coming, so I paid special
attention to the thread.

Someone mentioned that a company called PowerBook Parts (www.pbparts.com)
offered a custom made hinge that was good quality steel, as opposed to the
cheap metal used originally by Apple.

I checked Pre-Owned Electronics (www.preowned.com) and a replacement Apple
hinge was around $200 ($99/hinge). Now, I like PreOwned, but I'm a cheap
bastard ;-)

I backed up my hard disk and shipped off my WallStreet after getting an RMA
from PBParts. USPS Priority Shipping with insurance and tracking was about
$25 and took two days to get from Atlanta to Arizona. Two days after they
received it I got an invoice in my email, and promptly paid via PayPal (my
best option).

I also asked if they thought I needed a new drive bay eject mechanism - my
left battery bay doesn't seem to want to maintain contact if I flex my
PowerBook too much, and we're not talking bending it, just lifting one
handed or something equally stupid. The reply, was a no. The case screws may
just be over-tightened. They 'passed' up an easy sale! Gosh... Honest sales
people... ;-)

Two days later (today) I received my PowerBook.

THE HINGE IS AMAZING! It's like brand new! In fact it's probably a bit
stiffer than it originally was.

I'm very impressed with PBParts... A great job and service.
